what would it take for mid lulu to be viable at the highest level

Quick googling showed me something with him @ 50%, but I wouldn't defend the "random poster on lolforums" as a legit source if anyone wanted to challenge it. Keeping track of years can be hard.

Difference between Kassadin and Corki is Corki had an absurd pick/ban rate at Worlds - nearly 100%. Take out Fnatic's games and Kassadin's presence at worlds is almost nil.
Corki at worlds is 48.5% winrate, but an absurd 92.4% pickrate. Compare that to Kassadin's 30.3% pick/ban rate, which drops to around 10% when you take out Fnatic's games. His winrate ignoring Fnatic's games is also about 50%.

I think riot is nerfing assassins not necessarily because they're OP, but because they want to open up the champion pool. Yes, gragas and orianna do well right now, but only because they're good against assassins in particular. If the assassin counterpick to other underplayed mids is nerfed then we'll probably see more mids without much mobility.
Idk though, I think most mids outside the assassin meta can make the game pretty boring. A fed AP nidalee is more bullshit than a lot of stuff.

So why did Fnatic pick it then? It's not like he's a trollololol style pick, but an important part of a particular strategy they run. That in and of itself tells us nothing about the 'balance' of a hero. Scaling (&mobile, read: safe) assassins have a fucked up power curve in LoL atm, and Kassadin clearly fits into many of the same problem areas as Fizz & Zed even if he's less of a hilarious train wreck.

Fnatic picks it because xPeke is a god on Kassadin. Kassadin is shut down through early lane pressure, but xPeke somehow always manages to find farm on Kassadin no matter what to stay relevant. Nerfing a champion because of how one player/team does on it is absurd. It's similar to how Anivia was pick/banned against CLG.eu virtually every single game long before Anivia became a staple Season 2 pick. Difference between Anivia/CLG.eu and Kassadin/Fnatic is that even when the metagame evolves to favor Kassadin, he's still a reasonably niche pick as opposed to Anivia's over 40% pick/ban rate during Season 2 when the meta favored farmy utility mages.
On top of that, the nerf to Kassadin is pretty darn hefty. It's not a small adjustment, it's a giant nerfhammer swing. Over 20% damage reduction on his Q, removing his ability to realistically stack his ult, plus taking away his MR is a big nerf. His ult also lost a lot of AP scaling since they moved 0.2 AP scaling to the stacks, but it's much much harder to get stacks on his ult now.

His early game was slightly buffed. Silence lasts .5 seconds longer and the mana cost is reduced. This means you can silence 0 > last hit without worrying about taking too much harass. Also trade more effectively too.

Sure, but the buff to his early game doesn't address why he's weak early on in lane (it's cause he's melee with poor base stats) nor does it really outweigh the nerfs to his lategame.

Fnatic also picks Kass because they love TP, and Kass basically needs TP in the earlygame, and is like the best user of it lategame.
That said, they should have hit his lvl 6 ult, but not the lvl 16.

if they want to rebalance kass they should actually address the fact that his mobility is off the charts. addressing his numbers leaves the toxic elements that enforce power creep in other mages and so does nothing for the overall game.

I think whether or not it's an early game buff is questionable.
It's a buff at rank 1 Q sure, but in the level 1-2 area silences don't mean much since there aren't many skills flying around.
But since Q is what you're maxing (far as I'm aware, maybe it'll change to Force Pulse after the nerf?), from level 3 it's a damage nerf and at level 5 the silence time is fairly similar. His MR is also being reduced.
It may be a small buff to his real early game (levels 1-3), but he's still going to be very fragile in lane pre 6.

That Elise skin looks cool and to get the champ would be nice. About how many games is it to get to gold? Not that I'll probably make it outside of starting a 5's team.

I'm the best, I only charge $20 Thanks for carrying ME, bro. You never fucking play anymore. And when you do it's like "oh, I don't know if I want to do ranked, I'm just going to play ARAMs".
Scared noob.
