Ya no it didn't. LoL got where it is today because their developers gave a damn about their community. No other game developer comes close to Riot's commitment to their community. Heck, the only reason LoL was at WCG 2010 was because every begged Riot for a tournament.

Plenty of developers deeply care about their community without seeing the same results as LoL. Riot had the perfect storm of factors that made their game so successful.
  • They started riding the f2p model early on, before a lot of other games caught on. Now the market is awash in them.
  • Lots of MMOs were dying, and people were looking for a new way to spend all their time. Enter MOBAs. DotA2 was still in closed beta and very elitist, new players didn't want to have to go back to WC3, and HoN was shit. LoL was good (not as good as it is now), and was open and free.
  • At the same time, solo streaming had really started to come into its own as a source of income during WoL's heyday. Sure people were doing it before on things like CS and the like, but SC2 had kind of made it skyrocket. LoL players were getting huge into it to, Regi and HSGG making their name in VoDs and streams alongside tourneys.
  • Speaking of tourneys and SC2, having WoL pump up eSports hype in the west left room for someone else to step in. In the western market, you really only had the choice of BW/SC2 or shooters. With DotA2 in Beta and LoL gaining momentum, it filled that opening quite nicely, bringing in lots of casuals and viewers.


I'm not saying Riot's amazing community involvement has nothing to do with it, it helped the process immensely. But LoL was there at just the perfect time to bring in all the stream viewing, eSport loving, ex-MMO and SC2 players that were looking for a free and fun game. If the beta had started 2 years earlier or later, we would not be seeing the same situation.


That's such a peculiar way to look at it. I mean, I guess your point is the timing was right, but the game was out for awhile, grew a small collection of loyal fans who really loved it, and it really started ballooning in player base months after it was a thing. I'd argue that League MADE it the right time for LoL. They made an entertaining game, and even if people were liking a different game, they left it to come play LoL. Idk about anyone else, but I was palying other games before I played LoL, and then I subsequently stopped playing the other games.


What you're missing is the WoW factor. LoL is a well made game, and an entertaining one, but there are plenty of games which are extremely well made and entertaining that are never more than afterthoughts.

LoL did a lot of things right, but the reason it's so successful today is because it's the WoW of MOBAs. It launched into a fledgling genre whose progenitors were old and worn, but whose progeny were all ill-conceived and poorly designed. It made some very basic and controversial changes to make the genre more inviting to those who might have been turned off by its predecessors. Finally, it benefited immensely from people dragging their friends into it. None of this would have worked if LoL was a bad game, but if you had swapped the timelines for DotA 2 and LoL the history of the genre would be very different.

There used to be 2 other textures, Fall and Winter. They were removed partially because it was harder to see certain things on on Winter (I never had an issue though), partially because with the map reskin they were no longer up to par. There are people that do custom map skins if you want a different visual look.

Just wondering about something here. If they were changed thematically to suit the champions, what would happen if Blitz and Thresh had their ultimates switched? Thresh pulling himself into a bunch of targets and silencing people sounds pretty cool, but worse than his current ult, while Blitz chasing and grabbing and then ulting to keep someone from escaping sounds pretty good. Mostly thought about this because Thresh's ult seems like it would fit Blitz's playstyle much better (chasing someone down, getting in position, grabbing them, holding onto them for as long as possible for his team to beat them up.

Dune is true game. You have to constantly repair your buildings or it's gonna get destroyed by sand.

I actually started playing LoL because I watched LZgamer or someone play it. It was so long ago I don't actually remember who it was. I do remember it was around the time of ez-kennen which is 2010/03/16-2010/04/08. So long ago!

I can't log into lol, so I guess I'll do something else.

No i mean, different 5v5 maps. Not that different like dominion, but more different than just skins that change some colors and textures... and the plants and trees. I want something like a mappool of sc. I understand that league doesn't need more competitive maps, but that would be really cool. Things like would require different mechanics, thinking, strategies and ofc different metagames. We know that all champions are not played in SR competitively, but if there are more maps, maybe some of those champions are viable in other maps. Or strategies like double adc support or double jungle. Maybe a map with a bigger jungle, one with less walls, a map where flash is not necessary lol. I don't know, i didn't have enough time to think about how a good map would be but again it would be really cool.

Well by nature fps games are limited by ping quite heavily so I didn't mean to say that the hats ruined it. Just our local community isn't the same anymore since those days. People don't play maps like gravel anymore either here which sucks. Kind of why I don't play any more games that I can't play on Europe and why I can't understand how people want their local servers so bad(See Oceania) when from my experience they always so shit or limiting

Eh, it wouldn't work in my opinion. Any map that is noticeably different from SR is going to instantiate a new meta, and therefore will be considered too different for competitive play.

On the other hand, the only way that you could change the map but still keep the core the same would be to do things like change the jungle paths, remove the river as a straight line between lanes, change position of buffs/dragon/baron maybe lengthen the lanes to 4 towers, or increase/decrease the distance between towers and lanes. I suppose then you'd have similar roles, but change the meta to more aggressive, more passive, more roam-y, or whatever. Unlikely that it'll ever be done though.
