Every time I read responses in threads like these that mention LoL outside the LoL forums; my soul dies a little on the inside.

Reading posts like yours, as somebody who doesn't peek too much to other sections (and especially the SC2 ones) I'd believe we're still in that period of time where any mention of LoL would bring bashing, outright flaming, insults and stuff like that 80% of the posts for tenths of pages.

Then I actually pop my head out, peek at one of those threads and start reading it, and compared to then it's really not all that bad.
There's been a huge improvement compared to even months ago in that department. Aren't we being way too negative instead of acknowledging that things've gotten better?

People calling Comcast say Comcast says that it's Riot's fault. Sounds like a blame game to me and Riot's never been in the clean either. They've had more server issues / bug in a month than SC BW would have over years.

Also people with Verizon getting the same issue.

I saw a thread on /r/lol stating that switching to Google's public DNS fixes it. Haven't tried it personally to grain of salt and whatnot.

That thread in particular more bashing on fgc than lol. But, still people are just as bad.

League won the ESPORTS battle despite the fine folk at TL shitting on our game at every chance they could for 2 years straight. I'm always going to be a little salty at the SC2 community for how they treated us. Like Alaric said, any mention of League in their forums would result in a flurry of insults and degradation of the game. Now it's not so bad and hell, you've even got IdrA telling people to get off their high horse but it's too late, they pretty much fell off their high horse anyway.

MEH. It's like being a guy that got picked on in High School by a bunch of the popular kids... then you meet them later in life and you're the sexy guy now while they're asking if you want fries with that.

Except, even as someone who still prefers League to Dota and likes SC2 about equally, LoL really only got where it was by chance. If DotA had been open beta sooner, or if League hadn't gotten a massive popularity boost for whatever reason (probably streams and the like,), it could be completely backwards. There's a lot of circumstances that put League in the right spot while making DotA play second fiddle.

Neither is significantly "better" than the other, just different. If you really want to make a simile, this is like two people that get the same degree with the same GPA, but one dude ends up getting a 6 figure job because he happens to know the CEO of some company through his family while the other guy has to take a standard entry level position.

“We needed a way to make the Olympics more accessible for young people,” said Rogge via his translator, “The sad part is, youth these days do not have the interest or capability to take up other Olympic sports. By introducing the League of Legends as a sport, we hope to rejuvenate the Olympics and maybe get some more youth interested in other Olympic sports like weightlifting or handball.”

Doesn't exactly sound like it was what they wanted.

Ya no it didn't. LoL got where it is today because their developers gave a damn about their community. No other game developer comes close to Riot's commitment to their community. Heck, the only reason LoL was at WCG 2010 was because everyone begged Riot for a tournament.

Insanity it self doesn't really do much; you definitely need to follow the diet as well to get good results.

It usually helps a lot of people because they go from complete inactivity to regular exercise.

Plenty of developers deeply care about their community without seeing the same results as LoL. Riot had the perfect storm of factors that made their game so successful.
  • They started riding the f2p model early on, before a lot of other games caught on. Now the market is awash in them.
  • Lots of MMOs were dying, and people were looking for a new way to spend all their time. Enter MOBAs. DotA2 was still in closed beta and very elitist, new players didn't want to have to go back to WC3, and HoN was shit. LoL was good (not as good as it is now), and was open and free.
  • At the same time, solo streaming had really started to come into its own as a source of income during WoL's heyday. Sure people were doing it before on things like CS and the like, but SC2 had kind of made it skyrocket. LoL players were getting huge into it to, Regi and HSGG making their name in VoDs and streams alongside tourneys.
  • Speaking of tourneys and SC2, having WoL pump up eSports hype in the west left room for someone else to step in. In the western market, you really only had the choice of BW/SC2 or shooters. With DotA2 in Beta and LoL gaining momentum, it filled that opening quite nicely, bringing in lots of casuals and viewers.

I'm not saying Riot's amazing community involvement has nothing to do with it, it helped the process immensely. But LoL was there at just the perfect time to bring in all the stream viewing, eSport loving, ex-MMO and SC2 players that were looking for a free and fun game. If the beta had started 2 years earlier or later, we would not be seeing the same situation.

Obligatory "Vileroze has time".

Also Balls probably trolled that interviewer regarding the Olympics but it's still written super-seriously, oh my, the image it's going to give if people read that.

Edit: yeah, hence the "obligatory", so that one is out of the way.

That's such a peculiar way to look at it. I mean, I guess your point is the timing was right, but the game was out for awhile, grew a small collection of loyal fans who really loved it, and it really started ballooning in player base months after it was a thing. I'd argue that League MADE it the right time for LoL. They made an entertaining game, and even if people were liking a different game, they left it to come play LoL. Idk about anyone else, but I was palying other games before I played LoL, and then I subsequently stopped playing the other games.
Hey! How you doin'?

I was never completely satisfied with SC2 after years of BW, but I know I used to shit on League when I played SC2.

Can't remember the last time I went to a SC2 forum or watched a stream now though, heh.
