It's close though, 12k to 13k :p

So I turned on destiny's stream because of the posts here. Incredibly annoying. Ragey. Stupid. I wouldn't be worried about his elo. There are players like shake and durr at 1800 who will just take all his elo away. I think they might have gotten too used to other players being competent at their roles at 2200+ though, so they'll have to figure that out how to carry again. Edging out a win by playing that 5% better isn't a viable strategy with the variability of play I find at 1800.

the only way to get out of 1800 is mass game or just get lucky at that elo, you have maybe a...3% chance of changing the outcome of the game. Season 3 is even more snowbally than season 2 and I didnt think that was possible lol. has anyone played a close game ever?

So if everyone has a 3% of changing the outcome of the game, the ten players (assuming all solo queue) have a total 30% chance of changing the outcome.

Where do the other 70% come from?

The math checks out. He assumes that the other players play normally.

I dunno if 3% is right. It obviously depends on how close you are to your true elo and other individual factors though so much that it's kind of pointless to apply a number so small or any number at all.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Zzz need to find a good support to carry my semi-new ADC friend on. Taric too boring for me, Janna has good peeling power but has to play too safe for his style. Maybe Fid or Lux support?

Lulu or Zyra. Especially on Zyra since you can build as on off-AP Carry/support and still do decent damage.

Can Zyra support effectively 1v1 one of the opposing champs? I haven't played her before but she seems strong when I play vs one.

Just to give some insight on my friend that I'm trying to teach...he insists dblades are trash item, rushes vamp scepter no matter what, and usually manages 40cs by 10mins. He does listen when I tell him to go in at least, so I'm kinda trying to carry him so that he can try to carry later lol.

You should go 2 bruisers bot. You'd be surprised how easy it is to get kills at low level :D.

Play sona or lulu if you want to carry him in lane.

She has a lot of dueling potential, I wouldn't recommend trying to 1v1 the enemy ADC, but if they were bad it could be done. She shouldn't have too much trouble against other supports either. Basically Zyra works well because if you really want to carry you can just build straight AP. The way I usually like to go is Sightstone->Sorc Shoes->Haunting Guise->Locket-> Bulwark, that way I can dominate lane but transition into more support-y items during teamfight. If you can get the gold and just want to build D-cap though more power to you. Especially if he's missing CS and you can pick it up with your own AA.

Edit: You just meant ANY champ, yeah if you build AP she can blow someone up if you hit them with her full combo.

http://www.reignofgaming.net/blogs/a-different-view/vvinrar/22769-is-the-elo-rating-system-accurate

This is really interesting because it goes beyond the simple "yes elohell exist" or "no it does not". He explain greatly how statistically the elo system is at the same time very precise and random under a few hundred games (200 elo variation, high % for a 1100 elo to hit 1400 or even gold).
To say the least, elo is accurate, but clearly less accurate for a team game such as LOL than for a 1v1 game such as SC2, and it needs more overall game to stabilize itself, which can leave the impression of elo hell for a few dozen games.

IMO he is good enough to play competitively, he just spends too much time trying to do innovative things in SoloQ. He definitely has the experience seeing as he was the Rank 1 player in HoN for some time. I just think he needs to stop messing around and practice competitive champs instead of hybrid Yi if he wants a shot on a really good team.

I think that figure is actually within expectation. I don't think anyone sensibly can expect Elo to be accurate to more than + or - 150 Elo.

The problem is players expecting Elo to have higher resolution than it actually does (overstating the difference in 150 Elo), plus people effectively doubling what they perceive to be the level of error by viewing themselves to be at the level of their peak Elo, rather than their average (e.g. viewing themselves as a "1400 Elo player" when they got to a high of 1400 once and never got there again).

Yes there is certainly a certain cognitiv bias regarding the way you perceived yourself and your elo.
But more than that, as the elo system can be random for a few number of games (he says a dozen), needs a couple hundred games to really stabilize itself, and that most of the LoL players are casual, not to mention that games a way longer than many other games, it is understandable that many people feel that they are not at the level they should (not that they are right) because they actually have to play more (in hour) to reach the level they actually have, or to understand that they really belong to this elo.
