Whatever the hell happened to Janna?
nerfs to pretty much everything. It's the funniest thing, it seems like supports get THE most buffs and nerfs of any role and end up in this constant cycle of 2 or 3 that are on top (currently blitz/sona/nunu) and the rest that are still really good but don't get played at all, then a group of 2 or 3 that were OP a few months back until they got smashed in the face with the nerfbat (at the moment it's janna/soraka)
|
The last 5 patches were a steady string of nerfs to Janna. The other lanes change with new heroes being released and new builds being discovered. As well as sleeper champs that some pro figures out and runs in a tourney and this is how the metagame evolves.
Support though... Riot doesn't release support champs. Support builds don't change and there are only like half a dozen supports period so every pro plays all of them. The only way we change is Riot obliterates whoever's on top each month so we go through a cycle. Unfortunately it's only changed through nerfs so supports become steadily more and more irrelevent until now we're nearly just an AP mid without any gold and no late-game presence.

The pros don't use Janna anymore because she is terrible for 2v1 lanes. Dat W slow duration nerf.
I am not convinced that she is actually "bad". It's just that in LoL there are always OP champions to abuse (currently, Sona) so there is no need to play mediocre champions.

soraka is still viable imo, against double ap/ big aoe. I like her against kat and aniv

Üüh! Can't wait for the weekend - want to give Synda another go. Perhaps this time? With the latest change to her ult, she should at least beat Morgana. Still think they should somewhat buff the range on it.

Yeah I'm just gonna play Janna/Leona now. I love Janna, my favorite champion. And people play whatever pros play for some reason and Janna hasn't gotten too much play in the pro scene lately.

There are actually assloads of support champs, really viable ones too. raka, janna, taric, nunu, blitz, lulu, sona, leona, ali, zilean and then a bunch of rarer but still good niche ones like lux, zyra, kayle, nidalee. Really the only truly underpowered support is karma, and she still destroys things at low elo. The cycle is also about which AD's are in favour. We're seeing hypercarries come back into fashion recently, so it's likely the defensive/zoning supports like ali, taric and kayle may come back into fashion over the next couple of months alongside them.

IMO Syndra could beat Morgana in lane with relative ease even before this upcoming patch, or at least stay even. But I feel that Morgana is infinitely more useful in teamfights than Syndra, so the question is how hard Syndra has to stomp Morgana in lane.

The simple fact is that Riot doesn't understand the support archetype enough. Just look at how many champs they designed that were intended to be supports but turned out to be better as another role. Then consider how many of the supports were initially designed to be another role and turned out to be better as supports.

Tell me what makes Zilean any more a support than Anivia.
His farm demand due to having enormous mana requirements inhibits his abilities as a support--just like they inhibit Anivia's despite her having good utility.

zilean was always a shit 0farm support imo. You literally get like 5 bombs in lane, and spend the rest of the game being a speed/slow/ult bot.
I think lux is a bit underrated as a support tho, imo. I actually feel like lux can beat sona pretty consistently, and in TL inhouses i've found her extremely effective against alistar and taric.

See, that would actually be fine if Zilean actually had the mana to cast multiple rounds of spells from base mana/mana costs.
His itemization demand for mana is almost as Anivia's, which is what makes them bad supports. Their farm priority to function properly is simply too high, even though they otherwise have good utility.

Xinsupport, wreck people at lvl2 harder then with leona.
Sure from then on it you are getting more and more useless, but the ult is still pretty good. Its gonna be a thing, trust me
