It's because noone was watching his videos when he first started so he did that to create a fan base (of sorts).
Also, I don't think the new "Athene" item is too good. It costs almost 3000 gold, where 3600 gets you a deathcap, it's just going to delay your damage. Mana regen is only really a problem early game, when getting blue is hard. IMO people will get it at the start, but once they've used it a few days, only champs who are using chalice now will get it.

What is good with this item is that it makes the Chalice build into something.

you dont rush deathcap on alot of ap carries: anivia, swain, galio for example rather want survivability + mana and champions that deal sustained damage like cassio want survivability as well. This item fits very well into the game and will be a n1 choice on alot of ap carries, especially along with the recent dorans ring nerf. I would consider this item even on some burst champions like veigar and kassadin who are manahungry enough to make use of it and have a weak laneing phase in alot of matchups.

Why do people always act as if Athene UG only gives mana? It gives a pretty significant amount of AP and a good bit of MR. I don't see how it 'delays' your damage at all. You may not be able to burst people asap but its a good stepping stone and great late game option. Deathcap is good, but Athene gives so much utility and sustained damage throughout the game. And the CDR also means you never really need to buy a blue pot anymore unless your blue buff is off which will save you tons of money. And if you're defending, you can get near max CDR even without blue.

It's an item that gives AP mids ALL the stats they'll ever want. And lots of them to boot.
Baller Mreg, CDR, 80 AP is pretty good too, decent MR.
Mark my words, unbeliever: If they don't "nerf" it, it shall be greatly OP.
The only reason Chalice is not meta is that it has no lategame transition, which was how it was balanced.

it gives as much ap as a NLR while also making you invincible to burst from your laning oponent and enough mana that you can donate your blue to the jungler who will be able to get way ahead with it
