I am getting married in 3 months. Originally the plan was to wait untill May or June but due to various reasons we have decided to get the legal side out of the way first and hold the ceremony in May or June.
Now I have one main thing I would like to do before I get married, and that is legally change my name. Let me explain. When I was born my parents decided to curse me with a 15 letter last name by combining my mothers name with my fathers. Its more anoying than it sounds. Especially in the millitary, for quite a few reasons.
I dont want my wife to have my joint name and I dont want my kids to have my joint name. I dont even want to have my joint name. So I have been trying to figure out how to file for a name change to change it just to my fathers name and drop my mothers maiden name.
Now comes the issue. I am currently stationed in Illinois for another 3-5 months. To get a legal name change in Illinois I must be a resident for at least 6 months. I dont know exactly how this works but I dont think I qualify, especialy considering I might only be in Illinois for 5 months total (been here for little over 2).
However to get a name change in my home state I need to actually attend a court hearing, something thats hard to do while residing on a naval base in Great Lakes, Illinois.
I seem to have hit a brick wall here, but this is something I feel quite strongly about so I will continue to look into it. If anyone has any ideas let me know because I am strapped for time. =[

"There will be a court hearing. The hearing allows anyone who may object to the name change to come before the court. Remember to bring a copy of all your papers with you to the hearing. Be prepared to tell the judge why you want the name change. Allow yourself 15 minutes extra time to find parking and find the courtroom where the hearing will be.
If the judge has granted your name change, you complete and post the notice of change of name. Then, 14 days later, with proof by you that the proper notice was posted, the court clerk will issue a certificate of change of name."
this is what it says about a name change in Oregon, my home state. So that is out of the question.

Im not going to say it isnt tempting.

I don't know how it works. Isn't it legally possible to just add the half of your last name to your wife when you legally marry. Then just worry about your own name later when you complete those 6 months?

Ive thought about this but I honestly dont know how it works and google only gets me so far on a question like this.

Why don't you just decide on a name and get married with that and then legally change both your names later.
|
my last name is only two letters, lol wow.
congrats though man. i hope the name changing situation goes well

kaka my last name is 3 letters, but my parents cursed me with a weird ass first name that rhymes with dildo, thus me getting made fun of a lot -__- thankfully in college, nobody knows nobody so i use my korean name :D

Care to share your 15 letter last name? Congragulations btw
|
I think often the wife changes her last name legally after the wedding, I don't see why you both couldn't do it then as well. If it's a few weeks later or something it's probably not a bad last resort option.

Marry in China. XD
Actually, I think your 15-letters last name can also be a blessing, since probably you are the only one in line that have it. Most east-Asians, like myself, have to bare a last name shared with millions.

ya i have a 14 letter hyphenated last name...shit sucks i feel you

Your fiance doesn't have to take your last name. For example my parents both use their own last name and they're married. If you want your kids to have a last name from your side you can change it any time before you have them.
Congrats on the wedding! I hope all you have are simple problems like this!

Wow, just noticed my last name is 18 letters long. But I like mine I think it has a nice ring to it. Full name is 32 letters long does anyone beat me?
Don't have any useful advise, but congrats and good luck on the wedding.
|
^^My full name comes out to only 22 letters, but I do have 2 middle names, so there.
|
Also, to the O.P., I've been a resident of illinois for 21 years, maybe there is some way I can loan you a few months of that?

agreed, just take her name and drop yours.

My name sounds funny. to most people, 13 letters first and last. Try to pronounce it: Artuu Suuntala. (i'm named after a famous finnish musician if anyone cares, lol)
|
At least you don't have a polish last name.
|
Congratulations on the marriage!! What is the name if you don't mind? Mine is 2 letters long LOL.
|
have her change her name to your father's last name now, then change your's as soon as it becomes plausible. As long as you get the name change before kids start popping out you should be fine.

You could change your name and marry his woman.
|
I took my wife's name in our marriage - why not just do that?
|
You can change the name later when the environment is more clear. Your wife is to keep her last name instead of adopting yours
p.s. 2 latter last name for me, I win
p.s.s. congrats

If her last name is cooler than mine fuck yes I'd take it. Nobody gives a fuck about Ted Cooper they remember Ted Suuntala.

Not quite as epic as Artuu Deetuu

Simple: don't get married. Or if you really want to then wait a couple more months.

My friend has a 15 letter hyphenated name as well(technically), but he just goes by the first of his last names(which happens to be the one that's harder to pronounce -_-), even in school and stuff.
Can't you either change your names after you get married, hold off the wedding until you can change it, or take her last name? Even if she doesn't believe you at first, I'm sure you could convince her you were serious.

An old friend of mine had a 15 letter last name (Cherwonogrodzky), and that wasn't a joint name. When we were in hockey together(I'm in Canada, it's ritual), his name on his jersey had two lines. He hated it, so I can understand where you're coming from on this whole thing. What I would suggest, like some others here, is to get married and worry about the name thing later, despite the marriage documents looking like a scratch pad by the time you're done with it. Changing your name may be important to you, yes, but I wouldn't push back the wedding if I were you. Hell, depending on where you're getting married, like at a church, you could laugh at the poor bastards that have to do the signs saying your names, watching them try to squeeze it in. Congratulations man, it's an exciting time, don't let something like the length of your last name remove from that.
Unless your last name is "HitlerMussolini", then you might wanna get on it.

Not quite sure how it works, but my brother bought some land in Scotland(Long live the internet ^^) and was legally declared a Lord. I told him to change his name to "Vader", kind of like "Madonna" or "Cher", then he'd be Lord Vader :D
|
Can't you just name your kids something different? As far as I know it isn't a law that they have to have the same last name (maybe I'm wrong). Just have your wife change her name to the last name you want and wait 6 months to apply for your own name change.
