OK so I've always wondered this - TL is such a massive active SC community - I mean I think its the biggest SC fansite that exists? (correct me here if I'm wrong)

Anyway we all know why TL is so fucking awesome today but having only joined up in 07 I've always wondered how and when TL started and what made TL so big and popular as it is today - what was it like in the beginning?

If you really want to look at some of the old old threads, click the individual forum tabs and change the "Show 14 days" setting to "Show All". You'll find tons of history buried within the recesses and archives of this site. Also check out the Articles section, which contains some legendary threads!

Yooo

I wonder how TL started too

I forgot how this forum looked like when I first came but I'm sure everything on the right side of the website wasn't there.

My profile says I joined in 2004 but I was lurking around before then.
I don't even play or watch SC anymore but I'm still here =D

*I think I came to TL.net when players like HovZ, FroZ, Grrrr..., Assem, Rek, FF)JianG[tC], etc.. were still playing and were pretty big in our SC community.

This site was actually a lot like the typical bw clan site with the same color backgrounds. It's just through proper site maintenance policies and a slow but fostering community that eventually grew from a small ember to a blazing inferno fueled by passionate translators, ardent battlereporters, and a sort of "laizze faire", but ban when appropriate policy by moderators.

That, pretty much in a nutshell.

Yes! That is how I remembered the earlier TL days =)

Also; the replays were awesome. I was trying to find replays earlier on to learn new strategies and counters and watch pros, etc.. but had a hard time finding stuff (before ygclan) but TL had an awesome database.

TL is awesome.

One thing I don't like is the banner. Can someone explain why is the banner are made out of bunch of white horse? What are their meaning and how they came about?

Everytime when I surf at uni I always quickly scroll down to avoid other seening it. :p

It sure is interesting how it all transformed from a clan homepage to a news/community site. The clan itself is more or less dead, but the community lives on.

Ya, like i said, Teamliquid was a lot like the typical BW clan site back in those days. Lots of idle banter and way less replies than what we see today, obviously.

It's crazy actually. It almost inspires me to make a thread on the history of this site :p

Always as hilarious everytime someone brings up the horses (and it's been done alot through the years).

I honestly don't know about the horses. Just that it's been discussed and that by now they're considered an integral part of TL.

Whatever you do though, don't try finding out how rank icons work! Attempting to unlock TLs secrets can lead you straight into some fucked up shit.

Basically, the site got started on the popularity of the founder and his team, Liquid Nazgul. As someone who's been a member of the site since literally the day it went online, I can tell you with 100% accuracy that's how it started Hard working and well connected staff over the years turned it into the best foreign site covering progaming, which has lead to a big explosion in popularity.

And of course, there's FakeSteve, who attracts homosexual males en masse, driving the sites daily traffic up into the billions!

If I remember correctly, those are the "horses" from Lord of the rings. They're actually the overflow of the river, caused by someone casting a spell to wash away the Nazgul and help some other people escape.

TL has a very clean design and loads fast, that, in my opinion is a big reason for it's popularity. (alongside all the others - great people, bans, atmosphere, staff, articles/news, etc.) Or it's just me appreciating the looks of the site.

TL is so awesome because there was once a time when we were the site with the most korean translations and best quality articles on the korean leagues. We then expanded into doing other things, like broadcasting shows and stuff...

This is important actually, having bigass avatars and half page signatures really ruin the forum experience, especially when every other guy have a girl avatar and a large girl signature and a lot of other crap in his signature.

This forum is really clean.

I think it's really the people, at least from someone who wasn't into StarCraft for a few years. I first joined TL to download replays when I was first starting to learn StarCraft. The friend who was teaching me how to play a bit stopped playing, and at the time I was busy with school so I didn't really have the motivation to learn myself. It's something I regret giving up, because I was improving, had some of the basics down, and was increasing my APM.

So, I stopped playing StarCraft, but I continued to lurk/post on TL. Not really following any of the leagues, but reading all the articles/features/ITW ninja topics, and so on that TL had to offer. Fast forward a few years, I'm still a member, and I browse the site more than ever. And I'm getting back into StarCraft again. Granted right now I'm just playing the campaign to get a feel for all the units and watching the leagues, but who knows, maybe I'll try to play a bit competitively in SCII.

But as awesome as things like Liquibet, the Power Rank, TLPD, and the very well written SC articles are, it wasn't all that that kept me here for 4 years. It was the community. Yeah, some people are assholes, but you'll get that on pretty much every forum. The majority of the people here are intelligent, good people who really want to make TL a special place.

At least that's my view on the matter.

All of the guys involved in teamliquid in the early stages were very smart guys. They created a home for alot of there friends and it quickly grew into a main hub.

Also alot of the best broodwar sites died when teamliquid was just getting good. I swear broodwar.de died like a month after I started posting here, same with broodwar.com.

Teamliquid now is nothing at all like teamliquid before.

For good comedy read hovzs posts, followed by ilnp and marshallfaulk. Then remember hovz beat up nextell in front of his mom, elky and smuft and ilnp scammed the entire broodwar scene for thousands of dollars and marshallfaulk ended up in jail or drugs & assault (so I heard).

Remember: we ban little girly-kids all the time because they sign on thinking they can say and do whatever they want to whomever they want right from the get-go - just like they're used to doing at other sites. That attitude won't work here. That's a promise.

From yet another lurker:

It's refreshing to have admins who don't put up with bullshit.

Fakesteve? I'd give it to Incontrol, that mofo is huge dawg!

Seriously though, I would say it comes from the hard work and dedication from the staff who spend insane amount of free time here, working on new projects, keeping old features running and up to date, tirelessly reading posts after posts to prune the shite users, etc...

This place without their hard work and dedication would not operate as smoothly as it does.

TL is awesome for pro-gaming news. Don't go oveboard in general awesomeness though. Every fan-site, regardless of their affection think that they are the best. Teamliquid has good moderation but keep an open and critical perspective.

That being said TL has the coolest admins/mods in the form of FakeSteve/Chill/Manifesto

Those guys are like legit awesome people imo.

well it's still centered around starcraft discussion, there are plenty of other members who just like to hang out and talk to everyone else. I would think that it'll start to become more about sc once sc2 comes out.

Yeah.

People who used to play SC alot (but only play for fun nowadays) and follow the pro-scene, probably make up a big part of TL.

TL is awsome due to moderation. But I liked the site x4 better when I lurked and later joined. More drama and focus om the foreigen scene. The extreme focus on progaming that has been over the last couple of years has just been too much. I think I really got this feeling after seeingthis gem. While the guy is a total loonie it's kinda sad to see that some people may think of TL as a progaming website and nothing more.

But there are still parts of the site where one can have fun without that stuff. I have also met alot of really great people here and had alot of fun and got loads of help. I even think I have improved my skill from only hanging out here and not playing much.

I agree about the fact that there's no huge random signatures.

But the main reason I really like TeamLiquid is a combination of the diversity in its members, the layout, and the moderation.

All of the above packed together creates something godly.

Having been here since 2002, this Forum is by all means THE most diverse and intelligent gathering of peoples in all of Internets. What started as a clan web page turned into discussions on Politics, Society, Culture, Religion, Sciences, and ultimately Poker (lol). It is an amalgamation of world opinions and ideas and viewpoints that could never be shared otherwise. When I first joined looking for StarCraft help, I was amazed to find the openness and understanding that others shared.

If the best philosophers were alive today, they would all hang out at TL!

Seen TL for about 2 years or so and only joined up recently.

TL seems to be a forum where people share and interest but dont flame the crap out of each other with intelligent posts. Good posts = good forum.

it's addicting to see idiots put in their place, as well as the occasional shenanigans that happen.

but, the point to take away from that is this:

While we are on the topic, I have a question...

Who is the head honcho at TL? I mean we have lots of moderators with banning power, but who is the head guy? Who is the TL Godfather? Who runs the show, owns the server, whatever...?

EDIT: Oh...did VIB just answer my question in the above post? Is that the guy who is in charge right now?

it's not as retarded as most gaming fora and has a better general section than most. Blogs are a cool idea too. You would expect that tbh, SC is the mature RTS.

saro&naz?
but they don't really run the show per se (anymore), they're just.. the founding fathers? iirc, anyway.

Saro is busy making babies and destroying real life. Naz is very active - just tends to stay behind the scenes i guess. Still does lots of work you never see lol. Naz and Meat are they founders/owners.

Because many people on this site actively watch or actively watched SC pro gaming. You've got to be pretty hardcore if you really enjoy seeing Korean guys playing a computer game at 300 actions per minute. Chances are you're at least in your late teens or early 20s which automatically eliminates about 90% of the shitheads on the internet.

I'm sorry Tensai but I'm laughing so damn hard.

Everything about TL is awesome. But honestly, if we had the same group of people, but a totally 100% different topic, we'd all be just as awesome.

Although the awesomeness of starcraft certainly helps.

this is like a self-enforcing group process where the members of the group boost each other and it's leaders, in order to feel special compared to the rest of the "lousy" internet.
