Nobody is "qualified" for that. We are no less qualified than anybody else. This was the first show to try and prove that someone could be the "best overall gamer" so they get to select who competes for that and what they will do for that.
Additionally, if you think the reason idra isn't on this show is because the show isn't about finding "the best overall gamer" you have a LOT to learn lool

What I'm saying is that you really don't look like the stereotypical "gamer" at all, but Idra does (no offense idra).
I dunno, it doesn't really need to be said but I can't help but noticed and get depressed that this show is just like all other reality shows

I just watched it on Youtube and I think it's a really good show. Certainly better than any reality TV show I've watched before.
The highest ranked choosing the competitor thing is really interesting. Because of course you can either choose someone weak so the lowest ranked gets through or you can choose someone awesome and knock that player out.
Looking forward to the next episode...

Don't forget the politics involved! You pick someone good to go against someone good you run the risk of the person you picked coming back and knowing that they were put in danger because of you. There is a lot of posturing, strategizing and other things employed hope they show it.. or you guys get enough to make some guesses.

Fen makes a good point that it is hard-to-impossible to award a title for "best overall" gamer or athlete (although isn't that kind of the idea behind events like the decathlon?), but surely you can be more or less qualified. Most of the people on the show aren't even near the best in their specialties, let alone best overall. Would you claim to be close to the best Starcraft player in the world? Are you even on the charts in any other game? Or take JD: fraternity house Madden champion is good, I guess, but can you really think of no one else more qualified to be called "best overall gamer"? But you miss the point.
The show isn't about the best starcraft gamer competing against other top gamers from other genres. It is people claiming to be the best overall gamer. That means they have specialties, strengths etc.. but they think they can top other games in a field of multiple genres. Additionally, the show includes real life challenges which complicates the term "gamer" for this show.
So in that sense they are reinventing the term "gaming" as far as we are concerned and awarding a title to someone as they deem appropriate. Do I think I am the best starcraft gamer on earth? Of fucking course not. Do I think I'd pound the shit out of Flash's face in Virtua fighter and Halo? Yes.
