Lately I have noticed that I will often lay in bed for an hour and a half, and not fall asleep. The television won't be on, and the only background noise is my fan. I do NOT have a night light.

I figured since you are all rocket scientists... I should come here and ask for help. And I will tell you that I have googled this before.

Anyways, I supposively have ADHD and that's the reason I am so restless during the night, and I'm wondering what you guys think I should get for it. Should I try warm milk, or try to get my mom into getting me some medication, or just some off-the counter stuff for sleeping.

Thanks for the help guys!

Sleeping is a pattern. My guess is your not following a pattern, its the most common cause. If you got to bed at a certain time and wake at an appropriate time (8 hours later) every night, getting to sleep shouldnt be a problem.

However other causes might be due to stress, too much stimulation just before bed etc. In which case you gotta deal with that yourself.

Any noise disturbs sleep if you're not a hard worker. You should do sports and don't change your daily routine more than 10-20%.
Also don't eat later than 4 hours before sleep, recommended is 5-6 hours before.

I get wicked insomnia sometimes. Especially when I was in school. There was a long perdio of time I could only sleep for 4 hours maximum, but I would get extremely tired at around 5pm.

Here are some tips I gathered that have worked for me:

- don't nap longer than 30 minutes during the day
- don't eat before bed, but if you want a snack, it should be low in protein and sugar
- do exercise during the day (huge)
- do get as much sunlight as possible during the day (also huge)

If problem persists, pickup a bottle of Melatonin and take it at bedtime. It will help retrain your internal clock, and it makes you tired (your body produces this hormone naturally when you sleep).
People who fail to distinguish Socratic Method from malicious trolling are sadly stupid and not worth a response.

Are you thinking too much?

That's what happens to me...I just think constantly, and it prevents me from from sleeping.

In that case, I just try to visualise things, or do some relaxation exercises.

For example, a lot of them I have learned through learning lucid dreaming, relaxation and 'meditation' style exercises, but not quite the same...I usually have the same troubles.

For example, an interesting one is to start with your lower muscles, i.e. feet/ankles/legs and work your way up. What you do, is clench a muscle group and breath in. Hold it for a few seconds, and breathe out as you unclench. Then work your way up your whole body, repeating the same process.

Another one, is visualising something, trying to concentrate on one image. Something kind of hard to imagine, something obscure. Examples: Imagine the crashing of waves onto a beach at night, imagine the sounds and the actual thing itself. To me this is strange because it actually feels like 'waves' of sleep coming over me with each cycle of the waves.

Another one, is imagine the splash that is created by a single drop of water inside a cave, into water...in the pitch black. If you combine these kind of relaxation exercises with those visualation ones it can be useful.

Other ideas: Try to clear your mind of all thoughts, it isn't as hard as you think...breathe deeply for a while, trying to zone in on a single thought...think of nothing but black or emptiness. Consciously keep your brain focusing on the single thought of nothing. Your mind will clear, and then automatically you'll get imagery in your head, which will be similar to dream patterns.

You might start to see 'hypnagogic' imagery, which are colours/patterns you see whilst drifting into sleep. Sometimes you follow those images, and they become less random and form a kind of 'scene' in your head.

Another thing to try, could be to make yourself tired during the day, it usually helps...exercise/stretches and so forth. I find a good one, is to use weights, or do pushups/situps/crunches/squats before bed and you'll get kind of warm and worked up, and then when you get into bed, you really feel a lot more relaxed -- combine that with the relaxation thing I described, and you can usually sink into a sleep.

Also, good not to keep your brain too stimulated before you go to sleep, i.e. using a computer. Apparently the bright monitor is essentially telling the brain it's still day time. The bright light acts like the sun, naturally your brain will keep working in a faster manner, a stimulated one that won't allow you ever to feel too tired in front of the computer. (That's what happens to me anyway.)
So I suppose, don't jump right off the computer before bed -- especially with SC, which requires a lot of thought and mental stimulation in general. It'll send your brain haywire and you won't be able to get to sleep as quickly.

And to get yourself relaxed/calm, don't drink any energy drinks and stuff -- and yeah you said warm milk? Perhaps just things that warm your body.

If you want some natural sleeping stuff, Valerian is a suggestion...I don't find it works too well for me, but it is an option. You'll get it at a pharmacy/health food shop.

Best thing really, is to actually be tired when you got to bed, and also establish a routine for sleep...if you have a sleeping pattern that is disjointed/mixed up. i.e. Going to bed at 2am one night, waking up at 8am...then going to bed 11pm the next night, waking up at 11am...you'll find your body/brain really don't know what to think and you end up having other adverse effects.

Sleep really is important, I hope you can get some. =]

I haven't been going outside because it has been hot out, but I have been doing situps.

Speaking of which I did 200 yesterday. I guess trying totake a break after every few games to go outside and sit in the sun or something might help... Maybe bounce off the walls more than I already do. If none of this helps I will get melatonin!

EDIT: Smurg I have tried not thinking of beautiful women. And I actually get to the point where I'm not thinking about anything at all and breathing at regular intervals... But something always pops into my mind in the last second.

On the weekends I like go to sleep at 12:00 and wake up at 9:00, and on the weekdays I go to bed at 11:00 and wake up at 8:00.

Or at least I try to do that every time.

Situps isn't sports, it's only a little bit of workout, that's definitely not enough. You should do something like going jog/run 4-5 days a week and on the rest days you should at least go for a walk or something. Every day 1 hour of doing sports or anything similar is minimum so start with that and aim at 1:30 - 2 hours later on. You can jog very slow if it's too hard in the beginning. Don't mind if it looks awkward, I'm doing this since years and I still do long jogs (very slow 1:20 - 1:40) and it will look funny throughout my whole life.

I've always had the problem where I could not sleep for at least an hour with in going in to my bed. But it's actually quite explainable. I do most of my heavy and deep thinking before I go to bed. So yeah, if you have something on your mind. It might be keeping you awake.

There is a hormone called melatonin produced by our pineal gland. This hormone is involved in sleep regulation. As we get older, we produce less and less of it. Being unable to fall fast asleep is a natural part of getting older. What Headbangaa said about the sun is very accurate. There are actually pathways that regulates hormone levels based on exposure to light(Melatonin included).

The more sun and the earlier you get sun, the better you sleep.

I am only 14 years old so I'm not very old yet

What if I have my window open and there is some sun coming through (not direct sunlight)?

I'm trying to take breaks after every couple of games to go out into the sun... But I've always been playing basketball with my step-dad outside every day.

there are a number of things you can do before you resort to drugs.

u need lots of sunlight in the day, and lots of darkness at night. that rhythm is very important.

eliminate bad foods. msg, aspartame (diet sugar that destroys membranes in your brain) caffine, too much sweet foods. everyone needs some veggies, high nutrient to calorie ratio foods.

too much cellphone useage will fry your sleep regulating systems in your brain with microwaves. restrict cellphone usage and increase the distance u use it. it can cut the intensity of EM waves by more than half.

exercise. don't take this as a curall. lots of profound changes (good ones) occur with exercise that directly help sleep

acupuncture. find a good acupuncturist. If ur in los angeles, Won Oriental Medicine Clinic is great. he has done wonders for my back also. 213.384 4589. top notch doctor. Chan Su Park.

and lastly, if u do decide to take pills, take the natural herbal formulas first. ones with hops flower, melatonin, instead of stuff like ambien CR. you will notice the difference when taking the more natural sleep aids as they are not habit forming, and you feel like the sleepiness is a much more natural sleepiness. ambien cr feels like ur being drugged - which you are btw.

lights out by roex works great for me when i can't get to sleep. it's way more cheaper than the pharmaceutical stuff too, i might add, on top of all the other benfits mentioned.

your body goes wrong for a reason and drug deficiency is not it. good luck. (p.s. ADD ADHD can also be cured with a good acupucturist, if you also combine it with eliminating foods that contribute to the body being out of balance.)

Exactly what crabapple and iNfuNwhatthe say, listen to them, especially the sunlight/dark thing and exercise. Also better do sports at forenoon but it's ok in the evening, just try not to do it when it's too hot, not good.
Acupuncture might be a good idea, I'm doing a therapy right now but it's also expensive since it's not an accepted method in the western medicine. But first you should fix the other things.

Don't drink anything with caffine in it after 3 or so.

Also, as stated, don't use your bed for anything besides sleeping/sex. You can train your brain.
