Poll: How Old are you? (Vote): 10-12 (Vote): 13-15 (Vote): 16-18 (Vote): 19-21 (Vote): 22-24 (Vote): 25-27 (Vote): 28-30 (Vote): Older than dirt (>30)
So... I'm sure this has been done before but I have always been curious, how old is everyone I'm pretty sure what the results will be, but I'm wondering... when did we all start? did we start at around the same age and now we have grown up? or does the game just attract a certain age group? Will the average age of SC players stay the same or grow with us all? Imagine, 10 years down the road and if we're still playing sc1 would the average age be 18-20 or 28-30??
|
|
i started when i was like 14-15 though..
whoaaaaaaaaaa
20 now
|
I am 24. I started playing this game "seriously" when I was 17. Quit a couple years ago, and am just now taking some tentative steps back into it.
PS. I am interested in practice partners. At my peak, I used to be about C+ level on PGT. I game around afternoon and evenings on American pacific time. nA.Inky on west. I play T.

[B] whoaaaaaaaaaa

I know, right? When the fuck did that happend?
|
23 now, I guess I was 13 when I started playing it, too 10 years...
|
I was 8 when I first started playing.
I'm now 18.. sadly I wasted those 10 years and didn't take SC seriously. I only started taking it seriously about a year ago.
|
23 in a month (exactly actually, haha) and i started at 13. jeeeeeeeez
|
I'm 20 and have been playing for about 6-7 years, I don't know exactly when I started but I remember I first got on bnet, it was some weeks before replays where released along with a patch(1.08?), I distinctly remember saying to myself "wtf, that button wasn't there before(save replay)"
|
|
this is more like average TL age, which is considerably higher than average SC age
|
ah well... isn't that all that matters?

19 Started at uh 12-13. I guess BW at 13, and a bit of vanilla at 12? Played the game when it was brand new tho! But not online.

Started the day starcraft came out. Then quit forever
Then came back a year ago to be the worst BW player of all time! hooray for me!
|
lol I wanna be 13 again with my current skills and knowledge, I wonder if I'd make it as a pro back then
|
24. Started when it came out, played casually ever since. My buddy and I used to think we were awesome 2v2 on Legacy of Char since we muta rushed every game.

You began playing starcraft when you were 9? Oh well.
I started when it came out (a friend was a betatester), switching from the occasional play of WC2 on LAN.
So.. began at 19. Now almost older than dirt. Haven't played much in the last 5 years, I also switched and played CS competitively for a few years.

Yeah, I was 9. I was really into computer games, and I was playing on my IBM aptiva with its trusty 4GB hard drive and 14 inch screen. Good times.

not to mention.... 28.8 kbps dialup connection to b.net or even dialing into a friends phone(direct connect)?? lol! I'd agree, good times... I too started when I was 10 and have bought the game 3 times since then. the first two times i had to throw it away because uninstalling it wasn't cutting it... too addicted, now i finally have the beast under control ;D

How did you guys who started that early get into contact with broodwar. It isn't really the type of game you nag your parents about to get at that age I'd wager?
|
Actually my cousin who was older was playing with his friend, that's when i "fell into the blackhole" so to speak. lol. He was dialing into his neighbor's phoneline and they were playing together... wow, it's crazy to think back then, i was so young O.O

Haha i had to buy the game multiple times as well, not for throwing it away though. I had to rebuy it for losing the CD before cd cracks came out, or when I would lose the Cd CASE and not have my cd-key for reinstalling... etc. Lol, I remember when it first came out it was so expensive. It was somewhere between 40-60 if I remember, and while that's average nowadays, back then computer games on average cost 20 bucks... I was shocked.

My step dad and my uncle both played it. So yeah.. lol I kinda just ended up with it.
Before StarCraft, I played WarCraft II at 6 years old :o If only I put effort into playing decently back then, I wonder how well I'd be able to play now compared to the way I actually play now. lol

First played at age 12, played single player for maybe a year or two and quit for a while. Started playing seriously when I was about 17 and here I am still playing at 21.

You kidding? Starcraft had huge hype. Blizzard was already big back in the day. I played Warcraft I and Diablo over 28.8 dialup with my friends (it was painful). My parents always got pissed that I was tying up the phone line.

23, I've been playing computer games since I was 5-6 years old, games like Beer Tapper, Prince of Persia, Raptor, Dune 1(yep, the quest/adventure game) and others, that I've forgotten the names of... the first blizzard game I've played was the lost vikings, next was WC1, when I was 9 and it's the reason I've liked RTS games ever since... obviously I didn't miss WC2 and SC

Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional. ~Chili Davis
- the youth will always mock age but unfortunately for all of us the only way to escape old age is death. I personally always see healthy older people as lucky bastards, they actually made it to their age. I know all to well there is no guarantee any of us will.

im 19, but i started playing in 1.07. I dont know how old is that though

Before that I remember playing this sweet game with Aliens and robots all the time at a family friends' house.
It was Starcraft! I was zerg from the start.

Argh! I'am starting to feel old with my 29 =( But then I dont play brood much nowdays, eve instead. Less frantic clicking is easier on the wrists

looks like 20 is the mean.
im glad there are still games that target older people primarily, while there is a plethora of games for kids.

Started at 13, now 18. I think my parents randomly gave me the game for christmas one year and it just kinda sat around for a year without me playing it

Ordered version so we can see who's over the hill:

The poll is how old are you now, but it has been reminding people of how long ago this game has been out and just how long we've actually been playing it. A lot of people feel compelled to say when they started (I'm assuming as a way of convincing themselves it really has been that long).

Oh Brood War. It was the first computer game I really played, the beginning of my transition from console gamer to computer gamer. Before this was Mario 64 and Zelda. Afterwards it was all about Blizzard.
My father had a LAN of 3 computers for his work in 1999. He let us install Starcraft on all three, and would even play with us. My house was the place where all the neighborhood kids came, and Starcraft was the game to play.
Good shit, I miss it.

Just turned 18.
Started playing regular starcraft at 11, bought broodwar at 13,began to progress at 14 and joined 88) and USA-B national team,USA-A at 15, and now I stopped playing as much to pursue competitive counterstrike .
|
I started playing sc in '98 - a bootlegged copy of it. After playing some modem games with my friends, I decided to get the legit copy so that I can play on Bnet over the summer of '98.
Oh man, I can still remember my first Bnet game - it was a 3v1 computer game and I really enjoyed stomping the computer.

hm....
starcraft came out when i was.....
4.
played it the first time when i was........
like... 6
i wasn't really into it at the time. plus, the zerglings were giving me semi-nightmares.
played again and got into it when i was... 10? 10 or 9. one of the two.
but at the time, it was usually just UMS
started competitively playing about 2 years ago. when i was 12.
|
22
started playing on lan with some friends at about 14, still have many early replays and we were hilariously bad
|
I wish starcraft didn't piss me off so much so I could get myself to play more often.
Too bad I made the transition years ago to focus more heavily on CS than on SC
SC would've been better, I feel like a fool

I'm 19 now, but I started playing before BW. And by "started playing" I mean my dad's girlfriend's son played through campaign, so I got hooked on it. The first RTS I actually saw him play was War I, and I actually played that before any other RTS. However, I couldn't get past Terran level 7 in those days. In between then and now, I've tried approximately twice to play again, but would always get stuck and couldn't beat a computer in melee 1 on 1 if I didn't zealot rush.
But I found randomly the Wikipedia article "StarCraft professional competition," looked up some VODs on YouTube, found TL.net and ... the next time I played melee vs a computer, without having touched the game in 4 or so years, I easily defeated it just because I just tried to click as much as possible and build as many units as I could. I still have that replay ... it's so lollerskate. I get 3(!!!!!) gateways the whole game and defeat a Zerg computer. I had no idea how to play and gained that much skill just by listening to discussions, watching streams etc.
Of course I still suck, but I understand basic concepts such as build orders, micro, timing, and not trying to win with one Gateway etc.
|
My dad got it from a friend at work who had an extra copy. I spent 1 year playing the campaign on vanilla, then another 2 years playing brood war offline. One day I got curious and clicked on that "Multiplayer" button, realized I sucked bad, and then got addicted. Three years later I still suck and I'm still addicted.
p.s. D/D- looking for a training partner, please pm if you're interested

I remember this same poll from about 3 years ago. The top choice was "16-18". Shows that the same people are still playing and not as many new people as before.

I started when I was 14, I'm now 15, I turned 15 this year.
Although it was around November when I got the game and I spent 2-3 months on single player missions. Long time, aint it? Ah I was doing other things too.
So I started playing b.net on feb, I'm not sure. So I started playing, an hour a day.
Then the game was getting awesome everyday and I stumbled on tl.net and gg.net. How awesome and now I have one month and two weeks on Iccup. I'm currently a d-. :-(
Ah well. I'm still playing for late season so I'll rally up a bit more wins when that comes around although is it in middle season now?
There's a lot more C's now.
In any case, that's my story. Awesome how I found tl.net
|
I'm 22 going on 23. I played SC in the 7th grade til I was around 19. Nowadays I rarely play.
|
Hum.
I'm 18 now and I touched sc the first time at the age of 9.
Shit.
|
|
I'm 16 now. Starcraft was the first "T" rated game I ever had...I got it in 5th grade, which would mean I was 10.
huh.
It's really insane that Flash has only been playing for like three years (I believe I heard this on Tasteless's Gom TV Invitational commentary, correct me if I'm wrong).
|
20. started playing at 15 i think, around about the time 1.09 came around. Skipped campaign mode (i remember i couldnt finish the first zerg brood war campaign so i just gave up. funny considering how dirt easy it actually is)) and money maps and went straight to hunters and blood bath. within a couple of months i had made a full transition to LT.
|
16, 17 soon
i remember i played the demo where you could only play terran and the highest unit you could make was a tank, then when i got the full version like 7/8 years ago...my mum wouldnt let me play it at first because it was too "graphical"
|
17now 18 soon started playing i think around end of 2003? 6th grade
|
19. I think I started playing when I was 13 or 14?

lol I remember a friend in class giving me a cd with a few cracked games on it back in 98' and starcraft was one of them... This was back in 97/98 and I was the only one in school who had a cd burner (650$ cdn lol) and I started burning the game for everyone for 10$ amongst a lot of other things (the cd burner paid for itself after a couple of months). Luckily in the summer of 98 I also got cable so didn't have many dial up issues heh. Got Broodwar for christmas of 98', one of the only games I have that was actually bought in a store, still have the box somewhere. I was 13 back then. Time really flies by
