EPTI don't even know if the words "Web 2" and "Web 3" are even relevant here, but I welcome the discussion as a whole.
I spent a long time in 2019 thinking and drafting ideas for how someone could create a social media platform that puts everybody on "even ground" with regard to exposure. The reason I didn't execute on this idea was because I found a cryptocurrency project that had a shockingly similar design and concept. Add to that, there is a sizeable number of completely failed projects and if you screw up badly enough you could wind up going to Jail like SBF or Do Kwon or Celsius and their crew. I didn't, and still don't, want to have that much responsibility over people's finances.
If you have been around on Instagram or Facebook long enough, you usually see memorable life moments get the most traction (as they should, why on earth wouldn't you want all of your friends to see your first born child on social media?), but what if you have an important event coming up that you want to invite friends to? Like a wedding, a birthday party, or another event where you need family and friends to reserve in advance? If you have 1000 friends on facebook, then with a "highly attractive" post in this day and age, you might get a couple hundred people to interact with it - with either a comment or a like, a share, or another reaction.
Reddit is basically the same thing, but the problem with reddit is, you could post something that is objectively true and people will downvote you because they don't like you, depending on how bad your reputation really is.
As I said in the first sentence of this post, one thing that draws me back to this website is that it follows the "classic internet" style. You post something online and there is nothing over-inflammatory in it so moderators don't hand out bans or nuke your original thread. So then everyone can see your post and you guys are free to discuss the content in the O.P.
I feel like there needs to be a social media platform that not only allows you to decide what you want to see, but how you see it. You want to see updates only from the 20 people closest to you? Ok, great, let me make that choice without having to interact with those people. Do you want to see them like a forum-post title on teamliquid? or do you want to see them formatted more similarly to Facebook or Twitter?
The thing that amazes me about what Zuckerberg is doing with his company / conglomerate of companies, Meta, is that I feel as though he has not truly maximized the user experience on Facebook and if he did that, then Facebook could be back up on the uptrend very quickly. I remember like 15 years ago friends of mine were using a version of chrome that had implemented this feature to expand or collapse windows where you input text on forums, and people thought that was revolutionary. I hope I'm not confusing anyone here, but I think the if you had 100% control over the way you view text and the way you view posts on Facebook, or how you could see dozens of posts at the same time, but you only really see the content (photos / videos / etc) if you click on them, and then being granted the ability to "rewind" or "fast forward" through posts that you didn't have a chance to see - that would be the killer app for Facebook.
Alas, I digress. What bothers you guys about the modern-day internet and social media websites? What needs changing?
