Damn, it's kinda scary what's going on in Tuapse. I'm happy that Ukrainians managed to strike a significant blow to the Russian machine but the environmental impact on that will be massive.

For the environment, it doesn't really matter overall if the oil burns now in Russia or later somewhere else in a car or power plant.

You may have some local effects, but globally it is all the same. And if you don't want local effects from your stuff burning, maybe don't invade other countries.

There are filters. Right now it's burning without filters. Also, it's not burning completely. I think this may be worse than if it were burned in an internal combustion engine.

Either way, what Ukraine is doing is necessary for their survival as a country. All blame is on Russia. These are valid military targets.

It's not just a question of burning. Whole coastline is covered in oil and mazut, it's leaking kilometers out into the sea and into the local rivers. They even have oil in the rain...

This is certainly a lot worse than burning in some car engine or any engine for that matter. But it is also a drop in the bucket in this war (or any war) when it comes to ecological destruction. As mentioned Ukraine has to do whatever it takes and then we will all have to help with the massive cleanup when it’s over.

Just to be clear. I'm not condemning Ukraine for doing it, I applaud them. I just wanted to point out that war - especially on such a large scale - has a pretty significant impact on the environment in addition to human lives and psyches.

I get that. It is super frustrating to see so much of the good work involving the world be undone by a guy who sees himself as above everyone else. He’s leaving the people of Russia (who are left after) a massive bill they will be paying for generations. And an environmental bill the entire world will be forced to pay.

Regardless of who drops the bomb, drives the tank , flys the jet or whatever. The blame for all this rests squarely on Russian leaderships shoulders.

I am all for it. Any strike against inland Russia's key infrastructure is a good thing. Expensive for russia in both censorship and clean up.
They need to be reminded ukraine can do damage directly and they can't be allowed to only think about the front line.

I have also just learnt Taiwan is now a major supply chain for ukraine drones, both in chips and drones, while russia is heavily dependent on China.

Good thing is the US has production capability domestically through TSM local factory , even though it's producing even more advanced 4nm chips than 6nm currently used in war.

I am just concerned how advanced Chinese drones are, russia is using mostly commercial level Chinese chips, and china is no doubt quite ahead in mass producing complex machine parts

It's scary how fast the military tech is evolving.

I am skeptical for the robot army effectiveness, but the drones are certainly reaching another peak.
The FP1 can strike 1000km range, and also can carry two small drones with it.
Russia testing with mesh network drones.

Starlink remains a backbone with little to no alternative.
Palantir being used for ukraine intelligence and targeting.

This has essentially become a playground for mega corps to show off their military capabilities.

But as a whole, China imo has similar close enough capability and capacity to do both hardware and software in scale, and at a budget. It's definitely looking scary if the west don't bring back their manufacturing base.

Yeah I think the most significant story in this is drone swarm. It's just like nukes, once you reach a certain level, everybody only has two solutions, total destruction or peace. Russia can always find a more isolated target to play toysoldiers for the great leader.

There is much more counter potential and no fallout for decades after the event. I'd rather deal with mass drones by a huge margin

Well, maybe the drone swarm issue can be addressed by Nukes, EMPs are a thing, so maybe they kind of cancel each other out.

I also think that dismissing ground and sea based drones is pretty silly, yes, obviously, the flying ones are the scariest, hardest to escape, but you can't win or hold ground with them, and you certainty can't do much against bigger ships, so there is a large gap in capabilities that ground and sea drones fill out.

Ukrainians have used both to incredible effectiveness, sea more so then ground, but as they heavily publicized, they seized and held territory with a combination of ground and air based drones, that's pretty big and even more so given that it reduces the risk to humans so much.

The cost of building a remote controlled tank / machine gun nest vs sending a human who, if they survive might need a lifetime of care (both mental and physical) or if they don't a lifetime of military pension to the family is not even comparable, so in my opinion that is the next frontier of warfare, along with 6th gen autonomous jets.

All very, very scary when taken in the context of overall AI advances.

Nuke EMPs have never been an issue and likely will never be. It’s a neat bit of science that the explosion also emits an EM pulse but complications caused by the pulse are very much outweighed by the complications caused by the explosion. In a world where the nuclear taboo is broken the cities have been burned.

Well, there are these:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse#Non-nuclear_electromagnetic_pulse_(NNEMP)

And I'd be willing to bet a lot of dark budget money is being poured into these kind of systems since the start of this war, seems logical and the most cost effective counter to a drone swarm.

An overview of recent doom posts by major Russian propagandists/warbloggers (auto-translate looks accurate). The mood is really changing. They're starting to openly talk about defeat. Some openly criticize Putin, as I mentioned earlier.

Why do you say dark budget? Sounds like pretty standard fare for military R&D.

It reminds me very much of WW1. Before WW1 German military planners assessed the forces arrayed against them and concluded that their only chance for winning was a quick strike on Paris, knocking France out before Britain and Russia could fully mobilize. 40 days into the war they were pushed back at the Marne, Paris was saved, the German plan had failed.

At that point there was a clear prior assessment of how the war would go, Germany would lose. That was what the plan for how to prosecute the war said, follow these steps, fail to take Paris, lose.

Everyone was on the same page there but Germany didn’t want people thinking they’re pussies. Simply declaring that their plan didn’t work and getting it over with seemed like a beta move. Much better to make them work for it, go down swinging, try your best etc. so that nobody can talk shit when you eventually lose. 10 million additional casualties, 4 empires fell, 2 more were doomed to fall from the damage, and it gave the world the gift of the Soviet Union.

And when they eventually gave up they insisted it didn’t really count because they were still occupying foreign soil at the time.

Well, I think it's one of those things that doesn't get announced, has 3d rendering, open bidding etc.

A lot of the current weapon systems, including most of the Drone developments have been done pretty openly, this one, similar to some of the anti-Radar technology or anti-personnel sonic and microwave weapons would fall in to the other category, at least to my intuition.
