I dont see a no-fly zone being enforced by eu/nato countries any time soon. Sending soldiers/planes into ukraine would be be new level of escalation, and to me the eu policy seems to very clear in that it intentionally avoids any direct military involvement. | ||

The world isn't as black and white as it used to be. I don't agree with 90% of US/West diplomacy, sure, but there are aggravating existing circumstances that cannot be encroached upon. Sadly, the Russian invasion of Ukraine is one of those that needs to be encroached. I'm hoping Ukraine holds long enough to force serious peace talks and a ceasefire. But if this week goes by and Russia isn't at the table with something credible and serious, then WW3 it is. Ukraine won't last past this week as it is now. | ||

I think many care but, given the distance there’s never that impetus to spill over to sufficiently change policy. Care in a ‘that sucks, now back to my day way’. Whereas Ukraine is well, in our orbit. I’ve met Ukrainians, including the legendary White-Ra. This is occurring next door to Eastern European nations, hell we have posters on TL whose safety we’re worrying about in the war zone. Ukrainian and Russian teams play in our European football competitions. I’ll concede I don’t know much about Yemen, I’ve never spoken to someone from there. It’s also awful but the Ukrainian scenario is both closer geographically, but also our cultural exposure is that much more. All human life being sacred is one thing, but in a crude sense there’s that extra pull because these are people who live very similar lives to ours too. I mean I was at the Iraq war protests, iirc there were a fuckton of people all over the U.K. out, we went in anyway. Or there’s been a pretty consistent pro-Palestinean movement since forever. Added to that I mean, the West has shown the many pitfalls of it playing the world’s police. | ||
