Poor people get sick and have to go to work anyway all the time. A lot of them want to know if they should think of this differently and why.

Is TL.net your sole source of information? Why would anybody ask you these questions you are ill prepared to answer and apparently lack the simple wherewithal to search for answers? Why the flu in particular? Its symptoms don't even match influenza. There is no need to downplay it, just as there is no need to fearmonger over it. Both are viral respiratory tract infections that cause fever, coughs, runny nose and can lead to pneumonia. The comparison is very much valid, why are you acting like he just compared unicorns to scorpions.

Still waiting for the first case to end up at my hospital. We are not one the four national centres who are supposed to receive all cases, but frankly the symptoms are somewhat hard to differentiate so I think it's a question of time if we get an actual outbreak here (so far only 2 positive, but likely some untested infected out there). Luckily we had the H1N1 scare and our plans from back then are just as viable today. Would be interesting to be involved but obviously I hope we will be spared. I should probably mention that none of us are routinely wearing any additional protection in our day to day work. Currently the attention being paid is largely academic curiosity.

I am getting emails from school/work that if i travel to a contaminated area i aint supposed to come back after a period of 14days. I am starting to see fewer people in the subway as well. On February 29 2020 00:05 GreenHorizons wrote: Anyone know how many people the regular flu kills in China every year? key points to know is that influenza has a mortality rate around 0.1 to 0.2% while coronavirus has a mortality rate around 2 to 3% while being more infectious (due to being new and spreadable during the incubation period, i believe). So the "what about influenza" question can easily be answered with a 5min google search.

I was just curious if anyone had a number with a source. Had no idea it would be so controversial a question.

Yes I’m joking relax. I do expect it to wind up here in Virginia sooner rather than later, though, what with DC being right there. That and employers not giving two shits about people coming into work while sick.

I'm just assuming this will be added into the seasonal viral mix at this point because most of the workers I organize with are going to just work through anything resembling Corona unless or until they need to be hospitalized because they can't afford not to.

It only takes a few seconds longer to check anything that isn't TL.net. So why didn't you take those few seconds to check this and see that it is a symptom (albeit, not as common as the other two listed) before replying with this misinformation-police nonsense?

It just usually leads to "well since more people are dying from influenza than coronavirus then it doesn't matter" which is missing the point.

For me specifically it is helping people recognize the absurdity of the US's healthcare and sick leave systems. The idea that people that work with things people put in their mouths will inevitably go to work with undiagnosed Corona Virus (and it spreading from coughs and such) has a sobering effect on people outside of my typical organizing circles.
