Virginia's legislatures are up, with most looking to see if the state's Republicans compromising on abortion access can work in a politically moderate state. Ohio's voting on whether abortion and marijuana should be legal. Pennsylvania's picking a state supreme court judge. Mississippi's voting for governor in a surprisingly close race in a deep red state, according to polling. The earliest result right now is that Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, should have won re-election. [Source] The pro-abortion side should have won in Ohio to enshrine the right in the state's constitution. [Source] Virginia's Senate predicted to stay blue. [Source] Not a shocker. The real uncertainty is in the House, which Republicans hold narrowly. House expected to be lost by Republicans, with either a tie or Democrats taking control. [Source] Throws cold water at Youngkin and at Republicans hoping to gain back some voters with a proposed 15-week abortion law with some restrictions. Mississippi's Republican governor holds his seat. Pennsylvania's supreme court seat goes to the Democratic-aligned candidate.

edit: also the fact that Ronna McDaniel is still head of the RNC is lol edit2: Youngkin didn't win what he wanted in VA, but performance was similar to 2021 with worse maps for the GOP, it's still VA but they did ok (so far winning every seat that was Biden +9 or less). it helps to know what you are doing.

Good on Ohio for passing abortion and marijuana legalization. Only issue for Ohio dems is now they don't have as much of a push/motivation for 2024 now that abortion is enshrined there. Not that federal level is hopeful for them anyways with Ohio moving more red, but down ballot may suffer.

Well Ohio Republicans are fuming and have already said they'll pass a new amendment to undo the new abortion amendment so the Ohio Democrats can use that to motivate voters. These idiots don't seem to know when to drop something that's obviously not working. https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/politics/2023/11/08/ohio-republicans-make-plans-after-voters-approve-issue-1-issue-2/71498030007/

Same with Marijuana. Both will get the affected demographic out to vote (Generally Millennial and younger).

Everyone's dropping insane grenades like vivek calling haley and desantis "dick cheney in 3 inch heels. Haley saying "first off they're 5 inch heels, I only wear shoes I can run in, and also they're ammunition." vivek "we've become a party of losers" De santis "trump should explain why Mexico didn't pay for the wall." Haley priorities 1. Destroy hamas 2 give isreal whatever they need 3 bring our hostages home. These people don't think things through. Apparently, Trump skipped the debate again, as expected. Debate starts at 1:01:45 in the video below: Edit/Update: My stream of consciousness during last night’s debate: Vivek Ramaswamy: - crazy pro-Rogan/pro-Musk opening statement about how Democrats cheat; - DeSantis and Haley are both "Dick Cheney in two-inch heels"; - still extremely anti-Ukraine, pro-Russia, pro-Putin, and pro-Trump; - tried calling out Haley for her pro-Ukraine stance, even after she demolished him on this topic last debate (the audience correctly sided with Haley again); - tried attacking Haley another time because Haley’s daughter is on TikTok, Vivek got booed hard here, especially since he brought this up as a way to dodge the fact that *he campaigns on TikTok*... and then Haley correctly called him “scum” for his transparently low blow; - "Joe Biden isn't the president of the United States"; - this debate actually wouldn’t have been terrible (for a Republican debate), if he wasn’t on stage Nikki Haley: - “let’s make sure we have transparency in the classroom, as a mom I know what that means” (as an actual educator and as someone who supports LGBTQ+ rights, *I* know what that means too); - most of her responses were pretty decent and generally answered the questions Tim Scott: - super pro-religious/pro-faith opening/responses (Pence vibes); - casually threatens universities and students that their existence in this country is a privilege, not a right; - “senator, would you raise the retirement age on social security?” “all you have to do is go to a farm in iowa” goddd he’s just so boringgg; - he thinks abortion is infanticide and that aborting on the day of birth is a thing (it's not) Ron DeSantis: - surprisingly incoherent at times (nerves?), like when he said “…and that’s true whether it’s Iran or whether it’s any country on the world”; - “my policy on China is ‘we win; they lose’”; - “Biden’s Green New Deal” lolwut; - “I’m going to build the border wall and have Mexico pay for it” LOLWUT!? Chris Christie: - nothing he said was terrible garbage, as far as I could tell; - answered questions decently well; - he even admitted that food stamps are a good thing and that drug addiction is a disease They did a decent job of condemning anti-Semitism, but when they generalized and said “all hate is wrong”, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at their hypocrisy, given their positions that are anti-LGBTQ+, anti-woman, anti-Muslim, anti-Black, anti-refugee, etc. I didn’t keep up with the results of the recent state elections, but based on these candidates’ opening statements, apparently there was no Red Wave and I guess Democrats had some really great wins! As far as positives/rankings go: Christie had the most morally decent responses all across the board, in my opinion, followed closely by Haley. I think they did the best job of answering questions too. Scott and DeSantis came off as inconsistent to me, but not as psychotic as Ramaswamy. I think the audience preferred DeSantis and Haley over the others. Verdict: Trump is still the clear winner by not showing for the third straight time, and no one on the stage can compete with him. Their only chance is if Trump dies, decides to stop running, or is somehow banned from running, which technically has a non-zero chance of occurring. I’m sure these five other Republican candidates know this.

When democracy doesn't give them the result they want, it's either that democracy is the problem and we need less of it, or we keep redoing the vote until they get their way. In the latter case, once they get what they want, it's now time to stop holding new votes, the people have spoken, and liberals just have to accept the outcome of the election. So, wait... Republicans: We've gotten rid of the federal right to abortion, so now we can let the states decide! Ohio: Okay then... We vote to allow abortion. Republicans: No. Is that what's happening? Also, sometimes fraud is responsible for their loss. Accepting that they lost an election isn't on the table anymore. Actual responses start at "we didn't actually lose," move through "we lost, but we need to keep holding new votes until we win, because clearly the people didn't understand what they were voting for well enough," and eventually end up at "we lost, the voters do understand what they are voting for, and therefore can't be trusted to govern themselves via democratic elections."

We vote to allow abortion. Republicans: No. Is that what's happening? Yes. There was a referendun to enshrine abortion into the Ohio state constitution. Before that referendum even happened, Ohio Republicans slipped in another referendum to increase the threshold necessary to pass a referendum from 50% + 1 vote to 60% of the vote. This was held only months before the abortion referendum and was done deliberately to hurt the abortion referendum's chances. The voters voted against the threshold referendum and Ohio Republicans complained about the will of the people and promising a way to circumvent them. Then, voters voted for the abortion referendum and Ohio Republicans complained about the will of the people, promising to find a way to circumvent them. The GOP are fascists. They are actively trying to circumvent Democracy because they don't like the results.

Eventually though, if Republicans keep punting the issue to lower and lower levels when they don't get their way, eventually everyone will just be free to individually decide whether abortion is legal for them. Checkmate, fascists.
