Apparently there's people in the seattle area trying to get signatures for a gun control initiative by telling people that it's actually an anti grocery tax initiative. I'm generally for stricter gun control as long as it's reasonable, but this is just scummy and hopefully illegal? I've honestly never heard of this type of thing before, have you guys sen it or know if this is a thing that happens often? Do the signatures they gather even matter? Since the voting would still be done on the actual ballots.
|
It's a relatively unheard of thing because it's stupid and won't work lol. It's so dumb that I'd be suspicious of the story in the first place, though anything is possible.
|
That photo seems like they might have two petitions.
And Fav is right that plan is so stupid that I doubt the story is true or worth discussing if some brain trust tries it. They are going to get caught if true, so its not worth worry about.
|
For what it's worth the actual gun control measure sounds fairly reasonable and I'd vote for it, but yeah I've never heard of this kind of tactic. The multiple petitions explanation sounds fairly reasonable, so maybe the person that took the picture missed that part.

could this be "controlled opposition"? could these guys actually be against gun control. so what they do is pretend they are for gun control and then act like idiots to make the rest of the political initiative of stricter gun regulations look bad?

And attempting to shut ICE down is basically going to force that burden onto another group who is going to face the same issues. They'll be understaffed, have to rapidly hire thousands of people, and ultimately you'll be in the same situation where 1) immigration can't be processed fast enough, and 2) a lot of unscrupulous people are going to slip through during the desperate need to hire. sources? from what I can see, while immigration is up somewhat; it's not up to suhc a degree that it would require a tripling of staff; but I may be looking at the wrong number set. if an organization is sufficiently bad; it can be worthwhile to do a purge/restart with a new org. and ICE is looking sufficiently bad that it may merit such treatment. I'm actually having trouble finding anything with a combined stat, which is weird considering every site with a take on the current situation keeps saying there was a spike in the early 2000s.
As far as I can tell, overall legal immigration is on a continued slow rise, border apprehensions are on a long down trend, deportations are on an increase and overall illegal immigrant count is increasing.

This isn’t really that big of a deal. Its two people with a sign and the story might not even be true. It does not even the stupidest thing I have seen someone do today.

It really does seem like two petitions. Otherwise it would be tremendously silly to leave up the placard for the gun control proposition that mentions "safe schools" (though anything is possible).
Especially since there's also a petition on the ballot in Washington State about local grocery taxes, one with probably less buzz capable of generating a well-done support logo than the gun control measure.
The depressing thing is that these stories will gain some social media traction when they can be debunked by a single google search.

'White Civil Rights Rally' Approved For D.C. In August
The National Park Service has approved an initial request for organizers to hold a second "Unite the Right" rally, this time across the street from the White House in August — one year after white supremacists gathered in Charlottesville, Va.
The park service has given initial approval to an application from Jason Kessler to hold a "white civil rights rally" on Aug. 11 and 12, as first reported by WUSA9. Kessler, along with white supremacist Richard Spencer and others, organized the 2017 rally, during which a woman was killed. The park service has not yet issued a permit for the event.
The rally in Charlottesville last year drew hundreds of white nationalists and supporters who faced off in clashes with counterprotesters. A self-described neo-Nazi drove a car into a crowd of anti-racist protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring more than a dozen others.
President Trump drew fierce backlash after blaming "many sides" for the violence. Protesters came out in cities across the country the day after his remarks to condemn white supremacists.
In an application dated May 8, Kessler estimated that as many as 400 people would attend. He listed the purpose of the event as: "Protesting civil rights abuse in Charlottesville Va / white civil rights rally." The Los Angeles Times reported that the park service is now "gathering information" to issue a permit, which will "specify the timing, boundaries, sound regulations and liability rules for the event."
National Park Service spokesperson Mike Litterst told the paper that "public safety and the protection of park resources are taken into consideration" and said the agency does not "consider the content of the message presented."
Kessler also applied to hold a rally in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, but the city denied the application, according to The Washington Post. Kessler is suing the city; the case is still being decided. Kessler told the Post that he will have rallies in both D.C. and Charlottesville if he wins in court.
A website from organizers of the "Unite the Right" rally lists the event's primary location as "Lee Park" — now called "Emancipation Park" — the Charlottesville park that has been at the center of controversy because of its statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Lafayette Square, which sits across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, is listed as an "alternate location."
Kessler and other organizers have asked participants to be able to travel between Charlottesville and Washington.
An independent report issued in December faulted the city of Charlottesville in its response to the events of Aug. 12, saying authorities failed to protect both people's safety and their free expression. The Charlottesville police chief, Alfred Thomas, retired later that month.

At first I thought this was going to be the saddest rally ever, but then I saw who was setting it up. We will have to see how many White Nationalist show up for this event. Although they might be in for a rude awakening if they try to carry around shields and bats in DC. This isn’t some town that isn’t used to massive protests, it is the protest capital of the country.
Of course, the response we are going to see is a lot of counter protests. Because people really hate Nazis.

I'm genuinely confused by this. It is a $39 dollar jacket, and there is no way she is wearing something that cheap unless she is trying to send a message. Why wear this while traveling to meet children you were campaigning for? Are we being trolled? Is this a cry for help? Trying to create a distraction? I have no idea...

They stated "there's no hidden message" which I can confirm. It's not hidden at all, it's very unconcealed.
That said it's entirely possible the message meant something other than she not caring about human rights. Maybe it's about her marriage?

None of the dozens of handlers thought that this was a bad idea.

How come no one is blaming the illegal families for abandoning their home countries to selfishly try and get a better start in America?
Revolutionary action is what founded this great nation and these freeloaders are trying to leech our success without paying the necessary blood price to get there. I say, separate their families. They shouldn't have even had families if they weren't willing to fight and die for their own countries.

The sarcasm in that post is way too high.

They are asylum seekers who’s countries are ravaged by violence, or in once case a volcano. Many of them have family in the US. Should they stage a revolution against the volcano? Or the violent groups, sometimes that are backed by the goverment? You do know that people have done this throughout human history? Every nationality flees a warzone if it gets bad enough.

God your politics is fucked. Not because of this post, which I'm sure is satirical... but because I can easily see how it could be written with complete seriousness.
This thing with Melania Trump's jacket...
I mean...
Is that possible? I'm going to go cook dinner. This is officially too much.

They shouldn't have even had families if they weren't willing to fight and die for their own countries. there's a trend that people try to do what's best for their children, even if it's immoral. also, some people (like you) do blame the illegals, so it's odd to say noone does that. Which category of "blame" are you looking for anyways? and what does it matter whether or not they're "blamed" for that?
also, most of the places involved have alreayd paid blood prices far in excess of what the US paid. you sound glaringly unfamiliar with what it actually takes to make a decent society, and what makes one a success. paying in "blood" has very little to do with it.

I'm baffled why anyone in the United States is wearing a heavy hoodie right now. It's in the upper 90s in Texas and in the 80s in D.C. Guess she's one of those "jacket for the cabin" people. Then again I've never been a hoodie person, so...

Please tell me that was sarcasm. I refuse to believe otherwise. If not, I'll repeat from earlier: If your message is so blatantly bananas that people can't tell whether it's an exaggerated parody or not, there's a good chance it's not a good message or opinion to have in general. That's not just a republican thing, but goes the other way too.

That's completely false. Most people found it completely bananas to consider that the earth might not be flat. Whether or not an opinion is correct objectively has nothing to do with peoples' knee-jerk reactions.
Why do I need to support families I know nothing about, except that they abandoned their homelands? Because it's "the right thing to do"? Because of "Compassion"? Meanwhile, you probably still eat/drink meat and dairy products, even though that also involves ripping families apart, except it's cows and other animals that can't defend themselves, but somehow that's okay.
And the world is overpopulated as it stands. Why do we need to support the improved conditions of more families? So they can have even more kids?
