Like how the hell did they let this happen? How did they lose children? Sessions and others are splitting up families and can’t even bother to keep track of the kids.

To protect the kids and us.

Sessions and others are splitting up families and can’t even bother to keep track of the kids. Bloody hell. Imagine the possibilities in a system that disperses children with minimal oversight losing so many. Anything could happen, and it's a bloody open market for human trafficking and child labor issues. But it's completely unsurprising. Given the recent rhetoric about children not being innocent, dehumanization of immigrants and the crap about immigration courts ("Who ever heard of a system where you put people though trials.") Trump was spouting on Fox, this is the logical conclusion. It's obviously not a system set up with regard for the well-being of the people going into it, and some utterly atrocious shit is going to happen as an obvious result. He hasn't broken down the layers of decency enough yet to actually propose just shooting people at the border, but that doesn't mean anything is going to be done to prevent harm from coming to those in the system. This isn't the last or the most horrifying story that will come out of the US's treatment of immigrating children, especially not with the attitude of the current administration.

Sessions and others are splitting up families and can’t even bother to keep track of the kids. This isn't just a Sessions issue, this goes back pre-2016 as the article mentions. It also mentions a lot of the children are found alone wandering the SW border. But the worst part of the article is this Two years ago the subcommittee released a report detailing how health and human services officials placed eight children with human traffickers who forced the minors to work on an egg farm in Marion, Ohio. The report found that department officials had failed to establish procedures to protect the unaccompanied minors, such as conducting sufficient background checks on potential sponsors and following up with sponsors. As a result, the children were turned over to the people who contracted them out to the egg farm. Like how negligent can you be of your job?

I don’t care which party is in power, no one has the political back bone to rake this country through the coals for this mistreatment of children and their families. Americans are a bunch of special snowflakes who refuse to face the realities of the things they vote for. Speaking of, and vaguely relevant to recent discussion, MS-13 recruits from such 'lost' kids.

Except it was happening before Trump as well, all the way back to 2014. Every time articles like this come out people scream about their hatred for Trump, failing to recognize the systematic problems that exist. I've seen people who think the Gaza mess will be solved with the impeachment of Trump, etc. It's so, so sad, and thoroughly depressing. It's the same as when this guy gets arrested, and there's a bunch of people leaving comments on various news sites how they hate that racist asshole, but fail to recognize he acted with basically same core fundamental motivation Osama Bin Laden. Hurt can make you act without apology or regret. As he was escorted to the police car, Smith reportedly told the deputies that “they killed my son” and “my son was a Marine.” The problem is the US war machine fueling terrorism on both sides of the geopolitical aisle.

Whats the layman terms for how this affects the economy? I know smaller banks now are destined to fail if they loan out more than they're worth, but what else can happen? I'm not entirely sure what changed. Probably not great for the larger banks. I wouldn't expect much of an economic effect. Next downturn there may be more defaults. I would expect this credit cycle to be more moderate regardless, though I haven't been paying much attention. Usually financials react to and exacerbate (pos or neg) the broader economy than drive it. Banks don't lend out more than they are worth so much as they lend, and then asset values drop. Edit: also, usually when a bank fails not many care. It was the huge ones that mattered. Also the huge ones tend to be safer, so an odd paradox there.

In terms of national impact and attention, community banks don’t arouse interest. However, they comprise around half of loans to small businesses and farms, and many rural communities only have access to one of these banks. I remember a FDIC study that said around 1/5 of all counties only had access to small, community banks. The standards for underwriting and the strictest of new banking rules should only apply to banks with ~quarter trillion in assets, not 50-100 million.
