It also appears that the Pentagon was completely blindsided by this decision, which makes it even stranger. At the same time, Turkey was already moving a lot of artillery to the border so Turkey pressuring the US on this should not have been a surprise.

It was just as sudden and unexpected last time I recall, including the Pentagon not knowing about it before Trump tweeted. This is how Trump works, decisions made on a whim without consulting experts. And its just as much of a disaster as you would expect.

But Allan Lichtman who has accurately predicted presidential elections since 1984, and got Trump right last time had predicted that if the Dems didn't impeach him he would win again. But now he believes that if they do Trump will lose. He also got a congratulatory not from Trump after the last election! I thought his methodology is very interesting because they reject all conventional wisdom about presidential elections. He doesn't look at polls, doesn't listen to the pundits, doesn't follow day-to-day events, doesn't consider fundraising, ads, speeches and debates. He says all conventional wisdom when it comes to these types of things are wrong. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/trump-s-odds-for-re-election-house-hippos-are-back-empire-strikes-door-bahamas-tourism-after-dorian-more-1.5306553/presidential-historian-says-impeachment-would-kill-trump-s-chances-for-a-second-term-1.5306564 Alan Lichtman is a hack (or at least someone who is disingenuous to self-promote). He predicted Gore would win in 2000, and when Bush won he said he was just predicting the popular winner. Then he predicted Trump would win in 2016 and he lost the popular vote. Either he was wrong in 2000 or 2016, yet he still loves giving these interviews and lets them claim he has gotten them correct.

The cynical part of me thinks this was literally putin telling him to jump and trump asking how high. The other possibility is he is doing it to distract from the whole impeachment thing, or possibly the last person to have trumps ear convinced him it would be a brilliant move.

I mean if my metaphorical partner is snooping around and thinks I’m cheating, perhaps I don’t visit my mistress until the heat dies down so to speak?

Yeah, the solution for the kurdish allies would be for US troops to stick around until some degree of autonomy is negotiated with Turkey and Syria. This carries a risk of the conflict escalating, especially with Turkey on the move, and Trump obviously wants none of that with elections coming up.

I'm not sure there will be much kurdish autonomy with the turks at the table ever. So if syria and turkey just decide to split up the territories and supress the kurds, do you still leave than as the US? or how would you prevent such an agreement? I'm not really sure what a longterm non-escalating viable strategy would be, especially since basically the rest of the world already accepted that the kurds are screwed.

The problem isn't Trump withdrawing troops: there doesn't seem to be much choice now. The problem is Trump not giving a shit over all the signs Turkey wanted to go to war. But the EU has equally dirty hands. Turkey has maneuvered themselves into a position where they are key allies, and fully exploit that position. They can basically do whatever the fuck they want in the Middle East as long as they keep the refugee crisis under control and let the US have Incirlik airbase. Erdogan has transitioned from a relatively peaceful democracy to a warmongering dictatorship, and the entire West has sat by and said "yeah, you're a dick, but you're *our* dick". It's disgusting, but it's hard to see a way out of this mess. And as long as we keep playing realpolitik, the Kurds are unfortunately irrelevant.
