Who else on tl.net indulges in emulation of classic consoles? I am a huge snes emulation fan, some of my fondest memories include playing final fantasy 3 late at night. Does anybody have any fond nostalgic memories? I re-downloaded an emulator and my favourite roms recently, including :
Final Fantasy 3 Super Metroid The legend of Zelda: Link to the past Castlevania 4 Yoshi's island
a golden age in gaming, and a truly great way to relive it.
anybody have any good rom sites? i frequented Arch nacho and Tortilla godzilla's site, but its dying to my knowledge.
My first reaction is to shake my head when I see FF6 referred to as FF3
games: FF4,5,6 Chrono trigger Bahamut Lagoon Romancing Saga 3 Mario RPG Seiken Densetsu 3 Dragon Quest 5,6 SRW2,3,4,EX Goemon 3 Bomberman 4,5,6 DK 2 SF2 Turbo Super Mario World one of the R-type games
I still have my SNES and Sega Genesis in working condition and have them hooked up to the teli. I play them more than my PS2, I bought the PS2 but only used it for about a week before I got bored with it. The newer consoles have "better graphics", but seriously who gives a shit.
Still working on beating Zelda: A link to the past. Also <3 <3 <3 Street Figher II Turbo and Sonic the original. I haven't been able to get super Sonic in the original so much harder!!

Clearly we all own these games irl already.
Now that that's cleared up, Tales of Phantasia, final fastasy 6, Super Mario World and I even got into pokemon on the emulator for a while to indulge nostalgia~~
I got a cd a while back from my friend that had an NES emulator with every single NES game ever released, even the japanses ones. It also had and SNES emulator with alot of games, but not all of em. I dont know where he got it from though...
romhustler is good because they not only offer almost every rom, they also bundle all the known versions of the rom (including foreign releases), and many many known quality hacks/mods of said rom.
By the way, dont forget to check out zbattle.net to play your favorite snes games against others online.
I go on and off roms during summers, for nearly a decade now. SNES favs: Lufia II and Tales of Phantasia. Games that I might play if Im in the mood: Terranigma, Secret of Evermore, and LoZ: LttP. I played the more known ones like Chrono Trigger and the FFs early on, and I got tired of those, so I end up playing my first two most.
edit: ALSO, the last time I played, I was playing a LttP hack called Parallel Worlds. Complete hack, and fucking hard at times. Heres an upload, I threw in another one called Masters Quest:
if you have nostalgic memories from the times of nes here is a great site for you guys.. www.virtualnes.com or if you want to hear those great soundtracks of the old games once again here is a great web stream playing the very best www.kohina.com
i guess some of you already knew these. edit: typos
What does it mean when a rom is ESA protected? I would hope I'm correct in assuming that ESA isn't supposed to reference the European Space Agency. :\\
I used www.dgemu.com when I went through my emulation phase. Your downloads are limited per day and the layout is rather disorganized, but you can find pretty much any rom there.
Gotta love emulation. Basically all the games that I play (not including SC) are on emulator, including games like KoF98/2k2, Garou, SFA3, all of the translated FEs, FF6, Super Robot Taisen (series), Puzzle Bobble, Puzzle Fighter, Double Dragon, and a lot of other shit.
Bahamut lagoon is not too well known (i think) but its super fun on emulator. Funnest part is making uber dragons by feeding it all kinds of junk. Too bad when you max out the dragon, it reverts back to its original form.
Only bad thing about emulator is that its hard to play fighting games with keyboard lol. But why would u play single player fighting games eh?
Oh.... another bad thing is if you got a old ass keyboard, you can only register like 2-3 buttons at once. This got me stuck on my rerun of chrono trigger for a long time... when you gota push 3 buttons at once somewhere in the future timeline. Also, I couldnt dash jump on megaman -_-
Oh...... another thing is you get addicted to save states lol. You never die. Sometimes u can fuck it up by saving over your only recent file in a dying situation. If youre addicted to save states like me, you probly havnt touched the regular save file in ages.

How can you not love it?
I am definitely on the same page as you on this. The times when I don't have the internet and I'm bored I play emulated games. Yoshi's Island , Super Metroid, Zelda . I've replayed all those games at least like 6 times each. Such classics. There is tons of multiplayer games that are fun but aren't as fun single player that most people mentioned as well.
Can't forget Chrono Trigger or Secret of Evermore.
http://www.romnation.net/ is the best site I've found so far. I has MAME stuff too, like metal slug and other arcade classics.
The only drawback to the site is you can only download like 1-2 things at once and you have to type in the numbers for every download. But you are NOT limited to how many downloads you can have in a day or whatever.
More and More games have to be taken off the the list though because UELA or whatever makes them take down the downloads. Games like Donkey Kong, Killer Instinct,(Rare™ Games)and a few others also, I got those saved to my HD already though so if you want them hit me up, I'll email them or whatever.
There are so many NES games that are fun because its so basic and simple jump/shoot/dodge. Almost every game is fun and replayable.
Personally I like to watch time attacks or speed runs of games just as much as playing if not more in some cases.
If you guys are interested in 'Speed Runs' or 'Tool Assisted Speed Runs' visit these sites.

Thats why you buy a USB controller for like 5-10 bucks, I have 3 we have tournaments.
YES! usb controller for my computer is one of the best investments I ever made. It's just like playing SNES on a console.
I downloaded all the SNES roms from a torrent site some time ago, it is so much fun. If I had a time machine and could go back and tell 10 year old me that one day I would be able to play every NES and SNES game ever made for free, I would love to have seen the look on my face ;D. I'm playing through Chrono Trigger for like the 7th time right now. :D It's only worth it with a USB controller though, go out and get a good Logitech one now if you don't have it! Playing roms with keyboard suxx ;D.
If anyone is looking for any roms, I wouldn't mind sending anyone a few or directing you to the bittorrent site to DL them all, send me a PM.
EDIT: BTW, another great thing about emulators no one mentioned yet is, with ZSNES at least, you can connect over the internet and play 2 player games like Street Fighter and Mario Kart. PM me if you want to play, anyone! :D
I went through about 3 days of non stop super street fighter 2 online with a british friend from irc. nothing like staying up till 5 in the morning playing streetfighter. everyone should do it!
Games i want to play over internet - Tetris attack, uniracers
If any body wants a tetris attack game, i'll love you long time!

Tetris attack and/or Tetris battle gaiden. Best multiplayer games of their genre.
I was considering playing through FF6 again (the first "retranslation" was pretty shitty and seemed like a horrible find-and-replace job of "Magicite" to "Magirock", "Tritoch" to "Valigarmanda", "witch" to "bitch", and all manner of "crap/crud/darn" to "damn" or "shit" - extremely retarded) but found out FF6 Advance was released so I bought that and am playing through it now, usually during work breaks or downtime in WoW.
I am angered nobody here has mentioned Phantasy Star IV for the Genesis/Megadrive. If you have not played this game I demand you play it right now you fuck! I've played through that game twice on my console and probably 5 more times via emulation, including twice here at work (once with the English ROM and once with the Japanese ROM).
I had started a Chrono Trigger game on my emulator but kinda got bored of it by the time I got to Ayla's time period. On my console I had gone through New Game + about 3 times but that was years ago, and playing it now just isn't the same. Fights in that game just seem to be a lot more gimmicky than PS4 - or even FF6. Enemy is weak to X magic, enemy is charging up X big attack, enemy inflicts X status effect. Zzzzz.

also my favriote game of all times is Super Dodge Ball and its so much better for the o god cant remeber the name, the japenese verison of the genisis bad memorey anyway Super Dodge Ball FTW (the japense version allowed you to play single player with any of the teams, also many more special moves, unlike the usa relase where all you could play was usa for the single player.)
Tactics Ogre ( bow you fools -_-;; ) Ogre Battle Final Fantasy 4-6 Lufia 1-2 Breath of Fire 1-2 Seiken Densetsu 3 (trashes SoM out of the water) Chrono Trigger Tales of Phantasia Mario Kart Super Metroid
Wtf Bahamut Lagoon is pretty mediocre, fitting right into the "wow I need to customize and grow my characters (dragons) all in the same way so that they become identical imba killing machines" trend. And Secret of Evermore? It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't as good as SoM, which wasn't as good as...Hm, also, I guess Tri-Ace truly did improve a lot after SO1, progressing the series dramatically. I guess I think Mario RPG was pretty standard, boring stuff in terms of gameplay like Earthbound, but the environment's pretty fun in both cases.
edit2: I guess the Fire Emblems and Enix's action RPG's Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and (best) Terranigma deserve mentions too, as they were tolerably good, to understate it.

I abused save states so much in Fire Emblem 4 and 6 (I manipulated the rng in FE 6 a ridiculous amount). T_T It was so awful that I decided to play through FE 6 again without touching save states. It was... significantly harder, especially on hard mode but I got about a third of the way through the game before I got bored and stopped playing. I gave up on FE 4 pretty quickly because I couldn't get past the second mission (chapter 1) and recruit everybody without somebody dying.
I'm glad that the Wii has the Virtual Console, now I can pay for some of the good old games and I don't feel so badly about having emulated them.
Shit man, I spend like, literally, weeks and weeks playing roms back in the day when I had no SC cd, and I was waiting for my cousin to get them for me.

That games owns, so does 'Wind Jammers' for Arcade. Sounds gay but its like volleyball/tennis/soccer with special moves, 1v1 thing. its a dope ass game. Come to think of it , so it Mega man soccer for SNES.
lol emulation is illegal. Most sites close threads that link to sites containing roms. In before close!
I play ROMs a LOT more than I play any other games (including precious SC). Buy some USB controllers (Logitech makes some great ones) and the games will be just like on console - and even better in some cases!
N64: Star Wars-Shadows of Empire, Zeldas, Marios, NFL Blitz, Smash Bros SNES: Every RPG everyone already listed, Rock N Roll Racing, Tecmo Super Bowl, SSF2 NES: Double Dragons, Ninja Gaidens, Marios, Zeldas, Crash n Boys Street Challenge, Dodge Ball, and ten billion other games :D
I grew up on NES so playing like 80% of the games holds some nostalgic value to me.
Here is a list of my collection, all of which I enjoy and the best in bold:
Aladdin BomberMan3 Breath of Fire 1+2 Castlevania - DraculaX Castlevania V Chrono Trigger Contra III Demon's Crest Diddy Kong's Quest Dixie Kong's Quest E.V.O Search for Eden Earthbound F-zero FF4+5+6 Frogger Killer Instinct King Arthur's World Lemmings 1+2 Lost Vikings 1+2 Math Blaster Mega Man (all) Ms. Pac-Man Ninja Gaiden Ogre Battle - March of the Black Queen (Bow down to this game) Q-Bert 3 Sim Ant Sim City Star Fox Sunset Riders Super Bomberman 2 Super Mario RPG Starwars (all 3) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (all) Tetris Toy Story Yoshi's Island Zombies Ate My Neighbors
I remember when I first found out about FF5 and Seiken Densetsou 3. I was like 'holy shit'. Those are some good games, I never understood why Squaresoft (now SquareEnix) never released them for the US.

Dark Wizard was awesome and I loved it. My friend had a Sega CD with that game and I always wanted to play it. The only problem was when I actually got a copy and emulated it and was able to play beyond the first couple of stages. Finding those items with the Search command was just retarded, and randomly losing castles you've captured based on a chance of guards you left behind deflecting an attack was retarded. I can't even remember how the final battles went, all I remember was that the hot sorcerer chick I played as went crazy.

A friend of mine is a huge Front Mission fan, and while I never really got into it, he even went so far as to import Front Mission 5, his first import game. From time to time he would get stuck and send me screenshots so I could translate what things did (usually weapons/items).
Sorry guys, there is no 100% english patch for Tactic Ogre, but you can grab a psx emu and play the english version which is pretty much the same thing. I've played 90% of all english rpgs on the snes, but the most memorable ones that sticks out are....
- lufia 2: great gameplay, and puzzles, don't think I was ever that bored - earthbound: fun and quirky - final fantasy 4: I think this game should have been on the psx or something, awesome storyline but the snes couldn't make it shine - seiken densetsu 3: thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end, masterpiece at the time
Oh, for you rpg players out there, search for Y's: The Oath in Ferghana for the PC. Just got this in english and wow...it's intense, must try if you are an rpg fan.
Yeah, I played the PSX port in English for Tactics Ogre on the actual Playstation the first time I played the game. Then I played 10+ more times using the Japanese ROM for Super Famicom, which doesn't suffer from the PSX loading times and such, now that I knew how to navigate all of the menus. As far as I know, there was at least one group that had TO way way back on the backburner for games to translate, but I don't think there's even a menu translation or anything like that, sorry.
I don't know about Front Mission though. You can do like anything and win, and set up your team randomly. Not a good sign for a TRPG, no? >_<
edit: I do also have the TO: LUCT PSX ROM sitting in my hard drive, if anyone wants that. Too bad PSX emulation is so much worse than GBA emulation, not to mention SNES emulation.
