The TeamLiquid community starts on the forums but extends so far beyond that. We have a long history socializing together in various chat platforms; op tl-west, our IRC channel on quakenet, a vent server, a TS3 server and forming communities over common interests. With our TeamSpeak server approaching retirement we were looking for a suitable replacement. Choosing Discord was a no brainer.
Discord essentially combines IRC and TS into a single server which allows us to replace our retired IRC channel and soon-to-be retired TS server. Using some bot magic, we were able to set up the server to best meet the needs of our community. We hope that many new memories can be formed here, like those formed in the years gone by on other platforms.
Before we get to an introduction of the TeamLiquid.net Discord server we want to acknowledge the contributions of two people.
Mango has hosted the TL TeamSpeak server since its creation many years ago. His contribution in this regard is criminally under appreciated. So we want to take this opportunity to formally thank Mango for his years of contribution as the server heads into it's retirement very soon.

Tephus has been integral to setting up the Discord server. In particular the functionality of the channel is by his design. Every time we had a potential issue he was quick to find a solution and we're really pleased with how the server has turned out.

TL Discord Server: A How To
Optional: Grab the Discord client from this link. You can use the Discord client from your PC or smart device. You can also use it directly from your web browser of choice meaning any download is completely optional. Having used both, the client is nicer to use from my perspective than the web-app, but you won't be missing out if you stick with the web-app.
Step 1) Create a Discord account here (open the app and you'll be able to make your account there).
Step 2) Add the TeamLiquid Discord server by following this link and accepting the invite: http://tl.gg/discord
Step 3) You'll be greeted by the following message:

Since the TeamLiquid.net community is very diverse these days we've tailored our server to reflect this. Every user is required to opt in to the channels/games that they are interested in. This way the channels that are visible stay relevant and clutter is minimised. Of course you can change your preferences at any time.
To add a new channel type add game
e.g. add sc2 lol smash general
To add all the channels type add all
To remove a channel type !remove game
e.g. remove sc2
If you need help feel free to message someone with a red or blue name on the server and they'll be happy to help.
Step 4) Mute the welcome channel.

While the welcome channel is cleared instantly, you'll still receive notifications every time someone types in the channel. One day we'll be able to have this setting on by default but until then to avoid this happening you should mute the channel. You can do this by clicking on the little bell next to the channel name which you can see in the image above (the channel name in the above picture is #welcome, you can see a bell with a line through it immediately to the right of that).
Are you a fan of Liquid the progaming team?
The pro team has a fairly active discord server already. You can find that here: https://discord.gg/0gFdh9tARLb1N72y The server was created by the /r/liquidlegends community and has become an all-purpose hub to discuss the pro team.
FAQ
How do I make new channels?
At the moment this functionality is restricted to server admins. If there is a desire for a new channel (or even a new game) simply contact one of the server admins (anyone with a red name) and we'll look into whether we can accommodate that request!
How can I add the channel directly in the client?
