It's as if people think Quebec has wanted to separate in a vacuum and it's completely uncalled for. I am a staunch federalist and would not wish to see Quebec separated. Although I voted Conservative in the last election, I was happy to see Quebec vote for a federalist party then, and to me it didn't matter which federalist party. I want Quebec to want to be in Canada, and I am very much against the sort of comment that you quoted.

I wonder though, do you feel that that's representative of most of Canada?

Happy to see the Rhinoceros Party represented in my riding. I smiled when I saw them on the ballot. I saw A LOT of young people lining up to vote. It may be a bit biased because I'm close to a university but non-the-less it was significant. Many more than I expected.

I'm in BC and I hear a lot of complaints about Quebec from my students. I suspect it comes from their parents. It probably goes back to the rise of the Bloc Quebecois- alternatively, I'm not sure Trudeau's bilingualism was very well embraced out here, so that generation isn't overly fond of Quebec. I find I am usually the one defending Quebec. For teaching, I find it's helpful to bring in the Boer War because I think more than any other group, the French-Canadians had the best sense of Canadian nationalism rather the British imperialism upheld by English Canada. So it's a good starting point- but I don't feel like I'm in the majority. Then again, I don't know that vehement anti-Quebec sentiment is that rampant either- just run of the mill griping.

I think thats unlikely, most non french speakers who are based in Quebec eventually leave. Either they are there for a temporary work related gig or go in to try their luck because the city is appealing but really just muddle around till they leave. Most not all but you can go look up the resident databases and you will see what Im talking about.. As an immigrant to Quebec initially I had experienced a very limited pool in which you could operate in a white collar capacity and none when it comes to blue collar. The reality is that there is a fair amount of truth to the "perception" that you are talking about and I will be honest with you, the rest of the country is in many small and large ways easier to work with. This is the general opinion of people I work for.. work with and hang out with and Im sorry to say mine too. This isnt an indictment on any person particularly but there is a vibe there that is undeniable. Its not a hate so much as "leave them be and lets avoid dealing with them if possible" because concerted efforts to make nice and play with Quebecers generally get met with cold responses (even at the corporate level which is really quite silly). There is a defensive streak that is really off putting to anyone trying to work with them. Just this last Saturday there was a thing my friend talked about you can see in the spoiler. + Show Spoiler + A friend of mine working for GM has to allocate inventory across the country based on sales. If something doesnt sell somewhere he can have it moved so that the location is unburdened and still gets the credit for the sale (albiet in a different category for performance metrics) and every time he has to get something moved from Quebec because its not meeting KPI's he gets complaints that hes stealing their business. Everyone else is over the moon since they are relieved of loss leaders. And the hilarious thing is its to everyone benefit. But no. late replies, no responses to phone calls and general douchery. And this is just one example. And this is the nicest guy you can imagine im talking about here, hes been to Montreal like 3 times, loves to visit with his wife, but dealing with people hes just fed up off will obviously make his impression somewhat negative. Quebec is not the rich province it was and could have been because if its insular behavior (to the benefit of other cities primarily Toronto) and that reflects the will of its people imo. Im sure you feel differently, but the perceptions aren't based on the fact that the rest of Canada doesn't like you because the rest of Canada regardless of where I have been is great to people and extremely open to diversity. But everyone has a bit of a limit. Ive lived on the east and west coast in the US for the last decade before moving to Canada, so I have alot of experiences to compare it too and Quebec is sadly very low on the list of places and its not because of the language and Im the kind of person who tries to put a positive opinion on everything. The list of positives for Quebec are somewhat limited sadly.

Only thing kind of bad was the cold dark, windy conditions outside. But then again it also makes it feel like an adventure!I think I'll check back in 2 hours to see what the results are. *prays for any party but conservative*

Like I said its not an indictment against anyone in particular and I love the province (to visit) but having anything else to do with it makes everyone I know alot more apprehensive. Which is unfortunate but thats how it is. I know atleast 50 mcgill grads close friends, friends of friends etc etc, all of them love Montreal and a grand total of 0 still live in Quebec. That should give you an idea.

edit: hahaha one of the CBC guys is joking about some of the vote percentages in Newfoundland looking like dictatorship numbers. Over 80% in a riding or two going to the Liberals.
