In my smoking experience I have yet to develop a preference. If I'm being candid usually I can't even notice the difference. After over 11 years of smoking, I really don't care anymore lol. I mean, sometimes there will be a heavy indica or a heavy sativa that feels different, but other than that, I find most "strain talk" annoyingly reminiscent of undergrad headshop culture.

I'm pretty stoned and reading this thread over on LiquidDota and it took a while for it to penetrate my stoned-ness that the guy writing that stuff is really weird.

Seriously, if you go actively looking for it you'll probably go crazy. Instead, sit back and don't even think about it, and you'll meet someone to hook you up for sure. I started with no one as well, and eventually I met 4 bros to pick up from. Met the first guy talking after he bummed a cig off of me, met the 2nd dude in class when he blurted out that MJ dispensaries is a good investment, met the 3rd guy again through borrowing a lighter, and met the final guy through a friend who I didn't know smoked before.
Basically the smoker population is probably your best bet, and if you don't smoke... then too bad, just ask/smell around and it will come.

Wow, Canada sounds like a magical place to live (for real though, I've been dreaming of moving there for a number of years now)! While that has pretty much worked for me, I know that options for someone without any connections are slim. I have two foolproof tips, but the other one is kinda racist and I'm not sure if I should mention the other one either. It ain't easy being cheesy.

get up at 6 am walk to the train, ride to the train, walk to class, go through class, have no friends (how would I), walk to my next class, eat lunch, walk to another class, walk to bus stop, ride bus home for 1.5 hours get home to my wife at 5-6pm
im a 31 year old married guy going to umd. even if I had time to socialize, which I don't, it's not exactly the easiest to just make friends and start inquiring about smoking. if I wanted to do that I would just go hang out at a bar. but I don't want to do that.

If you lack the streetsmarts, internet is your best bet, but you may need to look for a different type of website/browser.
Yo Travis I remember you now from a long time ago on my other accounts and lurking days, I'm glad you got through the suicide phase and are happily married man, congrats.
But yah, either you could ask around (especially the cig smoker population like I suggested), or you could stay dry. You have all day at school, seriously just ask someone smoking a cig for a lighter, casually mention trees and there's absolutely nothing to lose. If they say no, move the fuck on to the next person. Something like 1/4 to 1/5 of the student population smokes trees, and your chances are even better with cig smokers. Even just asking one person per day will almost definitely get you a hookup over the course of a month.
I asked probably no less than 20 people before I got a connection once, and I've spent over 100 bucks just to treat a friend to get the number for a guy. It takes active effort to acquire new connections, it's not going to happen to you magically. But when you do secure a guy, make sure to actively seek other connections so that you're never dry and have the option of shopping around for the best guy.

well I don't even know where the cig smokers are, I have literally never seen one on campus, you can probably only smoke in certain areas. But I don't even have time for that anyways. I literally have no time for socializing, I am either walking to class, in class, walking to lunch, eating lunch, or trying to catch a bus/the train.
That said I actually did manage to find someone today, weird coincidence. It was pretty obvious I should strike up a conversation with the guy cuz his shoes looked like these:
