Well he's not totally or completely wrong. If I recall correctly, the idea behind "I think therefore I am" was established in his Meditations. The purpose of his meditations were for Descartes to look at all the beliefs he's acquired, examine them carefully, and accept only the valid ones. In one of his mediations he considers the possibility of an evil demon creating the world we live in, with everything in it being 'illusions.' He goes on to claim that if the illusions were perfect enough such that no human could tell they are illusions, only the evil demon could (he supposed they have some extra property X that only the demon could see or know about or examine), then to humans the illusions are the real thing, ie not illusions to humans. So considering this world of illusions, I know that I can think. You know that you can think. But I can't KNOW that you can think, and likewise you can't KNOW that I can think. Hence, through the I think therefore I am, I can only prove that I exist.

You are pretty much right, but the explanation seems a bit off. Descartes was trying to rid himself of every single belief and opinion that he did not know to be true with absolute certainty. The purpose was to build a 'new' set of knowledge claims that absolutely true. The problem is that in examining the foundations of his beliefs he ended up discarding almost everything, including much of the "knowledge" we claim to have of reality.
In his search for absolute truth he determined that the only thing that we can be certain of are 'clear and distinct perceptions', these are examples of 'thinking', like perceiving that 3+5 = 8, or that you are 'experiencing' some image, like a tree. It is important to keep in mind that he considered these to be true only in the instant, not while liked in proofs, because proofs depend on memory, and memory cannot be trusted (he says a mad genius could be altering his memories and theres no way to prove otherwise o.0).
This is where cogito ergo sum comes in. It is often translated as "I think, therefore I am", this is wrong. A more accurate translation is "I am thinking, therefor I am". This is a major breakthrough because Descartes is finally able to add his own existence to his list of Truths, the act of thinking implies existence, and he knows its true because it is a clear and distinct perception.

Yeah, Descartes' Meditations are some of my favourite reads. And the fact that they're so short makes them rather accessible, though they can be a bit long-winded at times. But hey, it's older English so what can we expect?
Another good philosophical read, though quite different from Descartes, is Plato's Republic. It's written in dialogue format so it goes by fast and it's easier to read. It feels almost like a play or novel. (I think most, if not all of Plato's work is this way)
