how long can you keep a plant in the vegetative state alive?

Any amount of time. A mother is kept in vegetative state indefinitely. It just depends on how large you want to grow the plant. You don't want to veg for too long because of height problems indoors, especially with Sativas.
These are all good forums that will have answers to any newb question:

I never said to use full strength of a general nutrient. The feeding schedules that Fox Farm and General Hydroponics give are quite accurate and conservative. Those were obviously the ones I was speaking of. And your advice to not use nutrients at all is horrible. That will kill a plant or at the very least do massive damage.

I smoke more than 100 joints a day for about 2 years.
Now, I regret being young and full of energy, cause now I'm 2 years older and I feel like my body can't live without weed.
If I quit cold turkey, will I die?
;D srsly.

^ No, it gets better after 2 weeks and pretty much is completely gone by a month.

They are supplements that are optional. All of these nutrients cost quite a bit and so you probably won't want to buy supplemental items as a beginner.
