Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

Out of curiosity, why does the EU still ban GMO when some scientists say it's safe? Is it just a political decision?

The problem with banning gmos is that it's a rabbit hole that you dont want to go down with how much food is gmo or gmo influenced.

I would be interested if someone knows more about eu gmo laws.

I thought the EU just required labels on proper, DNA altered GMOs? I didn't know it was a full on ban.

Please can you cite this supposed ban on GMO foods?

I eat GMO all the time.

I am not sure about the EU, but some countries have already banned Glyphosphate, haven't they? Which may lead to the confusion - the thing is that the main reason why using Glyphosphate (Roundup) is so attractive is that you can manufacture GMO crops that are immune to it, thus getting a really nice shortcut to weedkilling. However while the technology is allowed by GMO, the danger is not in the GM process itself, but in the Roundup use.

Its mainly green/leftists showing that conversatism isn't a sign of being right wing.
Afaik allmost all of it is banned due to reasons no one can exactly explain other than saying its somehow unnatural and that gets loads of support.

Please can you provide a citation for something that is specifically banned so we can discuss it.

Otherwise we're dealing with generalities/vagaries.

Most of the discussion I hear(in the US) is people who just want more information on GMOs, like ingredients and nutritional information. And the push back to that labeling has sort of created a distrust to GMOs because people don’t like being told “its fine, trust us.” But US food regulations are pretty trash in general, so the distrust is compounded here.

There are many smaller and bigger enviromental and economic concerns. Few of the top of my head:
They are hard to control, spread and interbreed and thereby cause trouble to all the farmers that don't want to use them as well as to natural enviroments. An insect-resistant plant is nice to have if you want to use it for food production, it's a problem for those parts of your eco-system that rely on plants not being resistant.
Most of the patents for the plants and the poisons they are resistant against are in the hands of a few big monopolies. If all of your farmers are dependent on Monsanto that is not only a market problem, it's also a political problem because the company is not under local political control.
The useage of GMOs encourages the use of certain enviromental poisons, which in itself is not a clever goal. If you forbid those posions the GMOs are often not useful to begin with.

Bulgaria
In October 2015, Bulgaria announced it has opted out of growing genetically modified crops, effectively banning the cultivation of different types of GMO corn and soybeans.[57]

France
On September 17, 2015 the French government announced it would effectively continue to ban GMO crops by enacting an "opt-out" provision, previously agreed to for the 28 EU member states in March 2015, by asking the European Commission for France to extend the GMO ban on nine additional strains of maize. The policy announcement was made simultaneously by the French farm and environment ministries. [65]

Germany
In August 2015 Germany announced to ban genetically modified crops.[69]

Northern Ireland
In September 2015, Northern Ireland announced a ban on genetically modified crops.[70]

I'm sure better sources could be found. I just can't be bothered.

No, a big push here is to simply label foods as "GMO", not just "adding labeling info".

The concern is that this would create a false red flag to consumers since A "GMO" label means almost nothing.

It depends on how someone defines GMO, as stated above. The push for the label in the US reflective to a general distrust of the US food industry and lackluster oversight of the same.

No offence but I persistantly see you launching these types of topics. Some American scientists state that global warming doesn't exist.
It's banned for a large number of reasons, but from a consumer standpoint- GMO is potentially dangerous in the long term and honestly tastes horrible. I remember it from my days in Canada... I do not want it to come here.

It's a perfectly good question to ask when you have Europe and US as a comparison. Learn to respect democracy or go home.

Europe - little support for GMO
USA - Much more support for GMO

There you have your comparison.

Why the hostility? What has democracy got to do with it? Are you suggesting Europe doesn't respect democracy? Why are you so interested in his domicile?

Because his opinion is pretty anti-democratic. It implies I shouldn't mention the GMO word because it's forbidden in his world. In my opinion, it's a perfectly fine question to ask. E.g. why does this country does it but not that one? Except it's about continents here.

Neither is a democracy. Though Europe at least consists of democratic states but Europe/the EU has no democratic order. The USA is an oligarchy with some democratic processes in its one-party, two-wings system, but hardly any correlation between what the people what and what they get.
