Although this thread does not function under the same strict guidelines as the USPMT, it is still a general practice on TL to provide a source with an explanation on why it is relevant and what purpose it adds to the discussion. Failure to do so will result in a mod action.

It stopped being funny roughly 25 years ago. I have yet to see a single election period without a right-wing majority in parliament in Austria. Yet somehow I am trapped in this weird instance of reality in which the parties that have had a majority are fighting back against the "left-wing mainstream". Which in reality consists mainly of a few bourgeoise parties not being terribly opposed to the idea of gay marriage.

But hey, I guess that is were we draw the line in today's Fake News empire. Now, after this gracious far-left act from the EPP it is time to push through Article 13.

I mean, we had a net 12 years of leftist governments here (post-Communist era), and believe it or not, but in many ways, it was worse than today. Basically our leftist government was so bad that they enabled what we have today.

This has been my experience in the US, so you are not alone. The right is at the zenith of their political power, obtaining almost everything they have wanted since the 1980s. But yet they still claim to be oppressed and raging against the main stream. It is a politically advantageous fiction the right in many countries continue to peddle to avoid being seen as the establishment.

The right's right wing and the left's left wing view their centrist colleagues as members of opposite groups that infiltrated their own.

Yeah, I remember when your state-socialists lost power after winning the election based on lies... I don't believe that creating a supergovernment to balance out feudal-oligarchic economic elites is in any ways leftist, and it must either fail due to central planning failing, or simply turning fascist and joining the economic elites. But I guess the European socialists brought that upon themselves...

If the US is taken over by European style conservatives the next chance to get rid of the extreme nationalist mentaility is going to be the settlement of Mars I guess...

Back on topic. Amongst the three people to decide over Orban actually being dismissed is Wolfgang Schüssel, the former Austrian chancellor who used to reign with the far-right FPÖ. And who has been outspoken against the dismissal of Orban all the way, so it looks like the EPP is setting this up to be Orban's decision.

Our local anti-EU/anti-immigration/anti-establishment/ alt-right (with not so subtlety hidden racial purist theories and antisemitism)/ anti-elite party and climate change deniers, led by a rich narcissist, became one of the largest parties in the exit polls of our provincial elections today. (about 1/7th of total votes) The provincial representatives choose our senate, so they will have a large amount of senators. Fuck me.

Turns out the exit poll was off by, they (Forum voor Democratie) are actually looking to be the largest party with 94% of votes counted the current expectation is that they will get 12 of 75 seats in the senate, same number as the party of our current prime minister will get. It's crazy.

We did have a terrorist gunman attack with several deaths in Utrecht a few days ago, that probably helped them. But they were already polling high before. They also straight up deny man made climate change and want a Nexit from the EU.

Their leader Baudet held a megalomaniac 20 minute speech yesterday after the exit polls were in. He uses language in a strange way, I'm not sure how to describe it but it's very weird. He thinks it makes him look eloquent but his actual subject matter is anything but.

Started off with claiming our culture as the greatest that has ever existed, that once sprawled the world (in a reference to glorious colonialism) saying the culture is getting undermined by universities and journalists. And people of other culture coming here of course. Then compares renewable energy to people worshiping a false god and throwing money at his altar, because man made climate change doesnt exist. Then how the EU will take everything away from our great nation and that he will end our political cultural and economical capitulation.

Then how the party has come to this new battlefront, not because he wanted to but because he had to. And we, as a great people have greatness in us because our forefathers once killed mammoths when surviving in the ice age (not kidding). And how they will lead us out of this dark age, educating a new generation, to a new renaissance of greatness and prosperity.

And people cheered this nonsense. People are ecstatic with joy about this. A fucking science denier talking about educating.

There was a time when i tought our swiss right wing party was mad. Oh how the times have changed, in large part they are politically probably pretty much alligned, but they haven't yet invoked mammoth hunting, ours mostly stops in the middle ages and a heroic but unproven battle our forfathers had against the Habsburgs.

When I'm hearing about speeches like that or read the recent anti-EU Orban speech I'm almost happy that we've only got the AFD in Germany to deal with. They are a bunch of xenophobe nationalist idiots and their speeches are full of sh*t, but not that comically bad. Also they haven't passed our two largest parties (yet) and the greens are on the rise too.

Although it's the same shit, "the Nazis are only a minor part of glorious German history" (which is a joke, "German" history is 200 years rise of Prussia thrown away in the first WW, 800 years of "civil" wars culminating in the one where 1/3rd of the German population died and before that we have no info because nobody in Germany knew how to write), "climate change isn't real and everyone who claims so is acting out of self-interest or blind ideology" and "Muslims are generally evil/invaders/terrorists and we should be understanding with right mobs, since they are only scared". "The EU is bad" obviously is part of it too.

I haven't followed this closely so not sure what is the current situation but if it will lead to the uploadfilters and other suppressive measures for glorious copyright, then they just gave euro-sceptic parties a huge stick to hit them with. Not many people will be enjoying this legislation...

yeah that's pretty sad tbh. A bunch of 50something year olds who just don't understand what they're talking about when crafting that piece of legislation and probably losing a lot of people in the process who were once willing to vote for them.
Not gonna lie, I voted CDU (and Greens) before in my state elections but that's kind of a dealbreaker for me. Sad day

Don't think a lot of people will run over to euro-sceptic parties but that's def going to push people away and going to result in people staying at home come eleciton day. Especially in the younger-than-50 age brackets

(that being said, I haven't looked into it in the last 7 days or so. Supposedly there's been some minor change but can't say I know what specifically. Maybe it's not as dramatically stupid anymore as it used to be, who knows)

it has nothing to do with them being old and clueless they are well aware most people hate it, they just dont care because corporations paid a lot of money for that law to pass.

I also don't like the law but the "evil copyright holders" do kinda have a point. People make tons of money with content they use freely and don't pay anything to the creator of it. This is an actual issue, most likely the wrong entities will profit from it but the idea behind the law isn't unreasonable at all.

My sister has a small business online selling baby bonnets. She takes very nice photos of other seller’s clothing on the side as part of that business. I cannot tell you how many of her photos are stolen, just because it is so easy to do so and there is no recourse for her. It isn’t just big companies who want a way to protect their labor.

The euroscpetic parties ENF and EFDD have supported this, it couldn't have reached a parliament vote without their help on the legal affairs committee. And while the details of who voted how today aren't out yet, I bet it couldn't have passed without their votes.

This is a good point. However, she might get problems even hosting her photos on whatever content hosting service she's using. Because they need to be sure that's it's not copyrighted. Putting all the responsibility for copyright on the hosting side seems to me that it will lead to a lot of issues with how we use the internet now.

Ok, well that's their loss then I guess, seemed like an easy win for them. No doubt they will still use it as a stick even if they themselves helped implement it, because shouting is more important than reality often times these days.

Don't worry she can just deny requests from European IPs to visit her site, as most American sites will. Small and medium sized American news orgs have already done that when GDPR passed.
