Oh geez man, I would've found that Rb1 with 3 second time controls. Pressure was too much. I mean everything was losing anyway, can hardly blame him for making a desperate move under that time pressure.

True, it was over at that point. But that move was the silliest thing I've seen, there's at least 3 follow ups to that win the game in a few moves that I saw.
Well, let's see if Karjakin can pull it off. At now point in these rapid games was I like, oh look, Karjakin is in a winning position.

In general people are way too harsh on blunders. Blunders happen.

Was it over? Rb1 puts Karjakin in a very bad position, but not significantly worse than in game 2 imo.

I'd be very comfortable playing it (and I'm at 1700 nub). All of white's pieces were stuck. You can quickly win back a pawn there to even it out, and I think once you start moving your other pawns forward, it's a very favorable position imo.

I agree entirely. I still wouldn't call it losing though.

Does anyone have a stream with actual footage from the event? Would like to see the post game interviews.

Seems like Carlsens got a decent chance to win this one as well.

Makes you wonder if in the age of dominant chess computers faster time controls aren't the better measure of a player's skill.

I think we need at least slightly faster time controls. Also that would make spectating easier in some ways.

There's arguments for both. My view about game speed has been that game speed should be such that 50%~ of games end in draws at the highest level. I haven't watched many chess championships, but this definitely has been the most boring I've watched. Not sure if it's because of the games, or the paywall which leads to less people caring about it.

Sure. I haven't looked any deeper into the matter than the feeling that 2 hours too often give the best players enough time to figure out the critical complications in the mid-game.

WP Magnus.
Might have not won the first game, but there was at no point where Magnus was in danger (in the rapid games).

First time following a lot of the games. What a show :D!

wow, stylish ending. The rapid games showed quite clearly that Magnus is the stronger player. Wonder if classical time controls should go down.
|
There are a lot of people pushing for shorter time controls and I'm fairly sure there was at least one tournament with top players using shorter time control this year; but I can't remember which one.
