If Anand invested a lot of time into the mainline Berlin planning to be able to hold then he might be in trouble. Does he continue to play it or does this shake his confidence? I think Carlsen declining the drawish endgame 4. 0-0 Nxe4 5. d4 is a good choice for the match.I actually think he came out of the opening quite fine in game 1. In the second game he didn't really have anything throughout the whole game , though. I think if he wants to win he needs to play a little more off-beat. Magnus is just unbeatable in these standard Spanish games.

I don't think Anand should be afraid of main lines - you can't win a world championship that way. If he wants to win he can't realistically avoid mainline theory. What I meant was that Anand should probably avoid getting into these "typical Magnus" positions. Very standard openings with some kind of mixed up move orders or little changes. If I remember correctly last year Anand did really well in a Caro Kann game and nearly won if he wouldn't have let it slip. Anand has to try to draw all his black games with something and the Berlin seems like a great choice. Losing his first black game doesn't bode well for that strategy. Carlsen has indicated he isn't planning to go into the Berlin endgame and that worked well game 2. In the end, if Anand is fighting for a draw every game then it's going to be very one-sided.

Typical Magnus position would seem to be a slow, maybe dry-ish, manoeuvring type position. Although as you say you don't get to where he is by not being able to play everything. Still, you'd think Anand should aim for more dynamic positions where possible.

I can say this really seems to be strengthening my play as today I went 3-0 against my friend in OTB rapid with relative ease. Game 1 was a positional breakdown and in game 2 and 3 I found quick tactics in the opening to win decisive material. In my online 30 minute per side games I have been finding myself wishing I had more time to dig deeper into the middlegame positions (3 minutes per move drains your clock pretty fast). I am thinking of trying 45|45. I will continue on with the advice given by marvellosity in this thread: tactics are the fastest way to improve until 1800 on chesstempo.com standard tactics problems. I have also been reading a few pages of Pandolfini's Endgame Course here and there but am only about 1/4 of the way through. Heh, can anyone please explain this one to me? The answer is a one-move Nxd5 but it seems equal after Rxd5. Hmm maybe because black's king safety might be worse? http://i.imgur.com/Lg4Jd6P.png Heh, found another problem where I thought black was missing the key defensive move and white's "tactic" was working. Figured black should have played f5 after Qh6 to prevent the knight from checking on f6. Hmm, I guess after exf5 it doesn't look too good for black? http://i.imgur.com/yd7IInX.png

I agree Anand has looked somewhat impotent so far, let's see what he can dish out today and tomorrow. He did win the candidates after all.
