edit: Screw it, if you really want to argue that "unlikely to win" means "a good case", have at it.

David Franklin calls it an "uphill battle". That only means Niemann doesn't have the advantage going in. A "good case" means that he has good enough chances of winning to justify the attempt. Remember it's a 100-400 million lawsuit, so any chance that is very significantly above 0 makes it a good case, because even a 10% chance to win on just a single point would make it a hugely favorable deal for him. Heck, even 5%. Many people would even take a 1% chance. But we don't have to go that low, a 5% chance of winning on any of the points would make it a good case, and if you think otherwise I'd accuse you of not liking money. Imagine having a 1 in 20 shot at winning 100 million, that's definitely a good shot.

It's not my problem that people interpret a "good case" as something closer to a 60% chance in a 100-400 million case, and then find it very important to start a fight over it because their interpretion must objectively be the correct one for some reason.

It's maximum 100 million explained by gothamchess video about this and afaik if it doesnt get thrown out its gonna be a very long process and likely gonna be settled so its all about not getting it thrown out.

I'd also say Niemann is angling for a settlement. He probably knows that his chances aren't in his favor, but chess.com can much better afford to pay him than to lose the case, so they're certainly going to aim for the case to be thrown out, and likely settle if that's unsuccessful.
If you want to do the right thing, 80% of your job is done if you don't do the wrong thing.

Yes, as Fleetfeet said, it's just some elaborate 4D chess game.

Probably the plan is to throw a spanner in the Play Magnus and Chesscom merger deal. But it's so obvious that the judge or jury may sniff it out and the whole plan backfires.

Hmm your message is weirdly constructed and hard to follow your point. Are you sure the video supports what you are saying? Which specific part do you think Hikaru's behavior is inexcusable. He is being super nice to Hans (Video is from 2 years ago)

Ironically the video is from the time when Hans was caught cheating by chess.com, and he is taunting "How I am so ***** good" :D. Notice also that Hikaru is happy for the win and hopes Hans will do great.

Sorry for that, I'm a professional writer (i.e. broke and penniless since I'm barely above mediocre) and I try to emulate Hemingway's "theory of omission" and say as little as possible when trying to be creative or inventive in my use of words: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceberg_theory

The reason I shared the 2 year old video is because it's hilarious and funny -- there is a saying that "Humor is the spice of life" and I try to inject comedy incessantly when I write messages on message boards or discussion platforms. Most of it is "whoosh humor" and not incredibly obvious but I try to utilize non-sequiturs that are so bad that they make the reader want to laugh!

I don't want to misquote anybody but there was a Reddit thread about Gotham's salary being $20 million per year counting all his income streams -- and it reminded me of a recent video I watched by a fellow musician/composer:

He says that "money" is proof that you are doing something which society thinks is providing value. The example he used was playing video games (doesn't benefit society) compared to being a game-dev (making video games). Here is a pic of Gotham's fiancée/wife:

I am so impressed by his choice not to marry for looks or something superficial such as beauty (which fades after a decade or two). Gotham has my maximum respects for choosing a life-partner based on his own values, ideals, and morals. 👍

Lastly if I can find it later, I have saved on one of my "notepad files" somewhere on an old computer the most hilarious Gotham fan-fiction copypastas in my life! 🤣🤣🤣

Haha, apparently it is some Icelandic lava since the championship took place in Ice Land. Certainly a little weird and would garner some questions if it was just sitting on the mantle.

Fully agree. Would be awesome to see a proper chess960 circuit ending with a World Championship in the next year.

Chess 960 is one of those great ideas that just seems like a improvement over the original (meaning no disrespect to standard chess).

Another aspect of game design I find intriguing is the idea that Black should have the right to switch places with White after White makes the first move. This incentivizes White to select a first move that leaves the game in a 50-50 state, negating the first-move advantage. Unlike Chess 960, I don’t see this idea having a lot of traction, but to me it seems like a step in the direction of a more perfect strategy game.

Anyone here ever play Capablanca Random Chess?
May the BeSt man win.

That's an interesting idea, but I've got no clue how it works in practise. Out of the 20 opening moves, how many would be roughly 50-50?

I’m not a skilled player, so I don’t know which move(s) would be optimal. I imagine that opening moves like putting your knight in the rook file might be seen.

I also think this is a very clever idea.

Ironically in chessgames opening explorer Na3 and Nh3 are the two opening moves most likely to result in a victory for white.

The two perfectly balanced first moves are a4 and h4

Only joking, the sample size is too small to glean much

Wow, the first move - switch side option rule is new to me. But what a clever interesting twist!

Fisher Random may well be the future of chess in 10 years time. Keeps the game fresh and exciting. Even in SC, ain't cool to watch every Zerg go triple hatch or Toss go 2-base stalker all-in. Anyway, back to chess, there's this recent duck variant that's going viral on streams (basically, you make a move and place a duck on board to block a square).

That's why it's cool watching Magnus playing off-beat opening in rapid tournaments (and still winning!). That man has quite a bag of builds! Kinda like Flash toying around with random. It's a joy watching bonjwas trying to push the game to new directions instead of just playing for the win. Any sport or game needs a revolution of sorts to stay alive.

Any sport or game needs a revolution of sorts to stay alive.

This is the reason why MLB takes viewership numbers/audience-engagement extremely seriously. (source 1) (source 2)

The Major League Baseball competition committee is set to vote Friday on rule changes that would begin in 2023 and include a first-ever pitch clock, the elimination of the shift, bigger bases and a limit to how many times a pitcher can disengage from the rubber. (Disclaimer: I have no idea what "the shift" does)

There is a saying that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and by corollary, if your game/hobby or sport is dying, then you MUST do something to stop it from fully dying. (i.e. if you do nothing, then you are basically committing yourself to just watch it die off)

Jai alai is a good example of what happens if you do nothing:
