The cost of living in Australia is a lot higher than it is than most places in the world. Salaries / wages have to be appropriate to compensate for that. While you might not consider 100k+ a year to be rich, if you were living in a country where the cost of living was half the cost as it is here you would be hard pressed to find someone who said you were not rich.
