Another UAV has been found:

S. Korea finds third suspected N. Korean drone
SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korea found a third suspected North Korean drone on a mountain on the east coast, officials said Sunday, in what could be the latest in a series of border incursions by North Korea's unmanned spy aircraft.

South Korean soldiers found the crashed drone on a mountain in Samcheok, 290 kilometers east of Seoul, earlier in the day after three local residents informed the military that they had seen the unmanned aircraft on Oct. 4, defense ministry officials said.

One of the residents, identified by his family name Lee, told the military he found a Canon camera near the crash site on Oct. 4 and later discarded it after using the memory chip that he claims contained photos of a beach near the mountain.

Lee told the military he had made the discovery while climbing the mountain to pick medicinal herbs.

The drone's appearance is identical to the one found in Paju, a city near the heavily fortified inter-Korean border, on March 24, according the defense ministry.

.....

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it will take legal and military actions over the North's violation of its airspace if the drones are found to have come from the country.

The JCS did not elaborate on what it meant by legal and military actions against the North.

.....

South Korea's military says it has found another 'drone' suspected to be from North Korea
South Korean military says it had found an unidentified "drone" suspected to have flown from North Korea, following the discovery of two similar objects near the border in recent weeks.

.....

The North on Saturday jeered at the discovery of drones that apparently flew freely over key areas in Seoul -- but offered no clear denial or confirmation as to its involvement.

The drone cases "occurred all of a sudden, more badly tarnishing the image of the [South's] forces which had fallen to the ground," state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted the North's army spokesman as saying.

The North hasn't been this bold in a while when it comes to violating airspace to recon the South. Why now of all times though? Surely they could send these UAVs after the joint exercises are done when the security in the region is less heightened? Seems pretty foolish of them to do this at this time unless they have an ulterior motive up their sleeves.

Japan orders military to strike any new North Korea missile launches

With respect, this title is misleading I think. Japan has issued the order to shoot down missiles, your title implies that the strike would be aimed at where they launch from - 'missiles launches,' rather than launched missiles. Quite a big difference!

Interesting development though. Hopefully they won't miss the missiles otherwise they might end up with egg on their faces.

It was literally taken from the Yahoo article and apparently even they changed it to"Japan to intercept any North Korea missile deemed a threat"

The article about it:

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that two Navy destroyers equipped with missile defense systems would be deployed to Japan by 2017. It was a response, he said, to provocations from the North, which has also threatened to carry out a "new form" of nuclear test.

The announcement followed other steps taken by the Pentagon to bolster its military posture in Japan, including an October decision to position a second X-band missile defense radar there. That radar is expected to be operational this year.

"These steps will greatly enhance our ability to defend both Japan and the U.S. homeland from North Korean ballistic missile threats," Hagel told reporters at Japan's defense ministry.

North Korea can test all the missiles they want as long as they don't fly close to Japan again (like last time). Also countering doesn't mean attack.

And don't forget that this deployment is back-scheduled for completion by 2017, so if anything this is merely a gesture to look like something is being done when nothing is going to happen...as per usual.

I'm sure it sounded like a great idea at the time.

In all fairness, it might actually still be a good idea. A lot of people over there are still sore over WWII and Japan hasn't exactly been penitent about their crimes, unlike Germany.
A Japan powerful enough to defend itself is a Japan powerful enough to rise again, especially in the eyes of fear-mongering propagandists and concerned citizens. If Japan hadn't been disarmed, odds are there would have been another war. If Japan gets re-armed now, everyone else over there is going to pitch a fit, and maybe justifiably so.

Japan currently has 6 Aegis destroyers and I believe they're making a new carrier, that's more than a mere self defence force already.

Edit: turns out it's not a carrier but a new destroyer that can carry up to 14 helicopters, but still.

U.S. is sending ships for the same reason they leave troops on the DMZ. If North Korea sparks aggression, U.S. soldiers will be the first ones to die, thus giving cause for military support of South Korea. Placing ships there gives two opportunities: one to fulfill our promise to protect Japan to protect them, and two to create a naval body shield.

North Korea calls on Foreign Office to act over Kim Jong-un ‘bad hair day’ poster
The row between a London hairdresser and the state of North Korea looked set to escalate today after the UK Foreign Office confirmed it had been contacted by embassy officials.

Diplomats from North Korea had already complained to police and to the shop’s manager about what they describe as a “disrespectful” poster showing leader Kim Jong-un with the words “bad hair day?”.

The Foreign Office said today that it had received a letter from the embassy on Monday, as the promotional poster looked set to spark the unlikeliest of diplomatic rows.

.....

Mr Nabbach, who is also a fashion photographer, said the men came back later and asked to speak to the manager before ordering him to take the poster down.

“I told them this is England and not North Korea and told them to get their lawyers,” he added.

.....

He said: “We haven't had any trouble since then, if anything the poster has become a tourist attraction. It was just something that had been in the news, and the North Korean officials didn't even have the haircut.

.....

AHAHAHAHAH
Oh man this is just pure gold. At first, I honestly thought that this would be something that would come from The Onion but for their foreign ministry to actually step forward and issue an official statement is bloody hilarious.

Stay classy North Korea.

North Korea 'detains US tourist' at immigration
North Korea has detained a 24-year-old US tourist, reportedly for "rash behaviour" at immigration, the state news agency says.

KCNA news agency said the American, named "Miller Matthew Todd", 24, had been taken into custody on 10 April.

This was due to "his rash behaviour in the course of going through formalities for entry" into North Korea, it added.

.....

'Gross violation'
KCNA said Mr Todd had torn up his tourist visa, shouting that he had "come to the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) after choosing it as a shelter".

The agency said such an action constituted a "gross violation" of North Korean law.

North Korea admits detaining a US tourist who demanded asylum

SEOUL/WASHINGTON - North Korea said on Friday it had detained a 24-year-old American this month who demanded asylum after arriving in the country on a tourist visa in "a gross violation of its legal order."

The announcement was made while U.S. President Barack Obama was visiting South Korea, one of Washington's closest allies and still technically at war with Pyongyang.

"A relevant organ of the DPRK put in custody American Miller Matthew Todd, 24, on April 10 for his rash behaviour in the course of going through formalities for entry into the DPRK to tour it," North Korea's KCNA news agency said, using the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

KCNA said the detained man had a tourist visa for the DPRK, but tore it to pieces and shouted that he had come "to the DPRK after choosing it as a shelter."

The U.S. State Department said it was aware of reports that a U.S. citizen had been detained in North Korea and it was in touch with the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang on the issue.

"We don't have additional information to share at this time," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a regular news briefing.

"Choosing it as a shelter". Right...announce a "captured" American just as Obama decides to drop by and just like how those confessions by Merrill Newman and Kenneth Bae were legit too!

China plans for North Korean regime collapse leaked

China has drawn up detailed contingency plans for the collapse of the North Korean government, suggesting that Beijing has little faith in the longevity of Kim Jong-un’s regime.
Documents drawn up by planners from China’s People’s Liberation Army that were leaked to Japanese media include proposals for detaining key North Korean leaders and the creation of refugee camps on the Chinese side of the frontier in the event of an outbreak of civil unrest in the secretive state.
The report calls for stepping up monitoring of China’s 879-mile border with North Korea.
Any senior North Korean military or political leaders who could be the target of either rival factions or another “military power,” thought to be a reference to the United States, should be given protection, the documents state.

According to Kyodo News, the Chinese report says key North Korean leaders should be detained in special camps where they can be monitored, but also prevented from directing further military operations or taking part in actions that could be damaging to China’s national interest.
The report suggests “foreign forces” could be involved in an incident that leads to the collapse of internal controls in North Korea, resulting to millions of refugees attempting to flee. The only route to safety the vast majority would have would be over the border into China.

.....

The release of the study comes just days after Beijing issued a thinly veiled warning to Pyongyang, ahead of a fourth anticipated nuclear test, that China would “by no means allow war or chaos to occur on our doorstep.”

.....

Source

All countries have contingency plans for the most ridiculous things happening (i.e. Canada invading the U.S. for example). But what makes this one unique is that the Chinese government has established plans to set up individual camps for refugees and officials separately, and not together to prevent armed resistance.

Not just that, but there are plans to only secure the border and no mention whatsoever of them sending aid to the North Korean government to help them in the event of a collapse or invasion.

China has always been iffy with its neighbour but if this leak's legitimacy is corroborated and proven straight (the timing of it suggests that it's the real deal), then it validates many theories (including my own) about China's official stance on North Korea that:

- They will not help in the event of a war on the peninsula, especially if they (the North) are the aggressors.
- China will not fight against the "foreign forces" (in other words, SK and the U.S.) but is willing to negotiate with them instead to gain a favourable outcome to China's benefit.
- "China, which is North Korea’s sole remaining significant supporter, also refused to export any crude oil over its border to the North in the first three months of the year." suggests that this is a warning to Kim and his cadre to get in line or get taken down.

More apparent leaks from Chinese diplomats:
China 'uses channels' to warn North Korea against nuclear test - sources

(Reuters) - China has used diplomatic channels to warn North Korea against conducting a fourth nuclear test, multiple China-based diplomatic sources told Reuters, after the reclusive state renewed its threat of "counter-measures" against perceived U.S. hostility.

.....

"China has told North Korea that there is no justification for a new nuclear test and that they should not do it," said a Western diplomat who was briefed by Chinese officials.
The sources said China had used diplomatic channels in Beijing and Pyongyang to convey its anxiety about the possibility of a fourth test to the North.

.....

But China had not threatened the North with explicit consequences, the sources said, and its message to the North had remained consistent.
"They are against another nuclear test - but it is a mistake to believe that China is getting more severe," said a second diplomatic source, adding that China had raised the issue with a special envoy appointed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

.....

Zhang Liangui, a North Korea expert at China's Central Party School, said it was likely China would support another round of sanctions on the North if it went ahead with another test. "It's very possible that China would support even tougher sanctions on North Korea," he said. "I think China should also think about adjusting the aid it provides.
