IPad mini or not, I can see how problematic it is that a Nexus tablet is in the same order of price as the iPad tablet it's competing with (even at like a 15% price difference).
Regardless, I don't call filling every single diagonal inch count with a product "marketing". Designers are pretty much shooting in the dark nowadays and trying every form factor possible and calling it revolutionary, sleek, "just right" and whatnot. Soon there will probably be a whole continuum of form factors and you'll be able to order your Nexus in 7:5 screen ratio with a 8.53 inch diagonal. And it will be just right.
What's more, they're pushed to increase the overall screen size because it's technologically faster to increase both screen size and screen resolution rather than increase pixel density. And they do want to increase pixel density, which I find a bit ridiculous in the end. Maybe that's just me but I probably won't ever need a 4k resolution on a 5 inch phone, instead I'd gladly take the extra battery life, but that's not where the industry is headed.

is there some kind of information I'm missing or something

the new nexus lines are no longer a cheap affordable line, they're google's flagship models that show off core android to its fullest potential. actually that was always the stated goal but they ended up eating some (a lot, really) of the costs because they wanted broader market penetration.
I heard the super dirt cheap Silver was scrapped and they decided to push flagships instead.

the new nexus has a 64 bit processor and a 9 inch screen starting at $399, which sets it directly in competition with the iPad Air 1&2, latter of which starts at $499. the 9 is at least 20% cheaper than 'apple pricing'.

if you want a better bargain there is still the nexus 5 and 7, both of which have specs that run today's apps completely fine.

are you guys serious lol
if its a smaller version then theres literally no reason to get a nexus 6 over a motox
and the 9 is supposed to appeal to a higher end market with the specs to back it up

i don't like the larger phone either but this kind of thing is blatantly obvious

Actually with 9's pricing, I do agree that they try to appeal to higher end market for specs, but this was a wrong move. It alienates all consumers like me who DO want a cheap tablet that isn't a vastly inferior tablet (Kindle HD with Amazon ecosystem) and can't afford Ipad minis. There's a lot of other consumers who want a "cost efficient" tablet. Samsung tablets are not cost efficient, and many ppl dont like the interface of it. This leaves pretty much Nexus tablets for Android. It forces people to pay big bucks or switch to Apple.

Now, this would have been a valid move, but 1 month before Black Friday where Ipad mini prices will all drop (at least on the 1 year old models)? Not a smart move by Google

TLDR: . If you are going to alienate a huge chunk of Android users with high pricing, at least do it when users don't have a chance to obtain cheap Ipads, not ONE month before Black Friday.

If you want cost-efficient, get a first-gen ipad mini, or just go for the retina. Those things are ridiculously good for the price and will last you years. Plus apple actually has tablet apps instead of enlarged phone apps. I never quite understood why Google ever allowed that to happen.

Google announced the Nexus Player on Wednesday as the first Android TV device, but there was no news on an updated Chromecast. Google's $35 streaming stick has been a big hit, and it's been more than a year since it was released. Now a device has passed through the FCC, and it's clearly a Chromecast with the updated model number A4RH2G2-2A.

It's not clear what Google would need to update on the Chromecast—it does its job pretty well. One glaring omission is 5GHz WiFi support. The new Chromecast (you can tell from the label above) looks like it might have 5GHz support (see below). FCC docs are notoriously confusing, unless you're an engineer who deals with the FCC a lot.

Unless Google forces all tablet brands to upgrade every tablet made in the past two years to Android L that's pointless. The Android market is way too fragmented. I recall reading that 40% of all android phones still run on 2.x. Tablets seem stuck on 4.x with manufacturers not upgrading the devices anymore, despite the fact that many of the older tablets would actually benefit from the less memory-hungry KitKat and L.

In terms of small tablets, the iPad mini is by far the best in its category. Large tablets I prefer Microsoft's surface line, but that's mainly because I use my surface 2 as a small laptop with added tablet functionality rather than a full-blown tablet. Otherwise, iPad air is still a better choice over any android tablet on the market. Phones are a different story, with android phones offering far more bang for buck than the iPhones - especially iPhone 6 - but get outclassed by WP8.1 in the lower segments (Lumia 520 and 630 are steals at their price points).

Meh. Id rather get the nvidia shield tablet for 100 less, same tegra k1 and aspect ratio id rathet prefer. Theres nothing in nexus 9 id care for. Finding it hard to see what others would see in this.

For the price, Google’s Chromecast is one of the best streamers out there, and consumers seem to agree. According to Google VP of product management, Mario Queiroz, the cast button has been pressed over 650 million times since the device’s release, a pretty significant rise over the 400 million figure Google reported three months ago. To capitalize on that growth, Google says it plans on releasing Chromecast version two, though it isn’t clear when the device will be available—or for how much.

Queiroz didn’t say much about the next Chromecast iteration, though he did hint Google is working to make the device “one endpoint,” while other “Chromecast devices” will act as other endpoints. So a kind of central hub for multiple devices. Maybe for your smart home gadgets?

“I can say we really want to bring the richness of this first screen-second screen experience to life” Queiroz said. “The hardware capabilities will give us a better opportunity to take full advantage of a large screen paired with a small screen.”

Go to your phone location settings, should be able to reenable it somewhere there.

Anyway, since I recently acquired a car, I've been flitting back and forth between Google Maps and Waze for navigation. Maps seems to have a more professional look about it and is apparently more 'reliable' to get you from point A to point B without fucking you over. Waze has the benefit of all that fancy crowd sourcing and real-time traffic information, but seems to be ever so slightly less stable and reliable when it comes to sending you to the right places.

What do people prefer?

I can't wait for the new OS. I tried installing CyanogenMod on my nex5 recently and the battery life is terrible. Dont feel like restocking to 4.4.

Also - have any nex 5 owners been able to get bluetooth metadata to work with display devices? My car stereo won't display any bluetooth metadata from my phone works with other phones just not my nex 5 sadly
