TL has a tobacco thread, a beer thread, and a whisky thread. However that most delicious of spirits, Tequila, is not getting the same love. This thread is dedicated to discussion and appreciation of Tequila (and other mexican spirits)!
Tequila is a Mexican spirit made from the agave plant whose history dates back to the 16th century. The Aztecs had a beer like beverage made from fermented agave nectar, to which distillation methods (brought over by Spanish Conquistadors) was applied and Tequila was born.
The Blue Agave
To produce tequila the agave is harvested and the large pineapple like hearts (the piñas) are cooked to release the sugars of the plant, which are then fermented in vats, distilled, sometimes aged, then bottled.
Tequila is classified according to the amount of time it spends aging in casks (which may be new oak casks, bourbon casks, wine casks, or even scotch whisky casks):
Blanco: No aging to 2 months Reposado: Aged 2 to 12 months Anejo: Aged 1 to 3 years Extra-Anejo: Aged 3 or more years
Mixto: A Mixto is a Tequila that is not made from 100% Agave, but uses cheaper cane sugars and the like. Jose Cuervo is an example of a Mixto.
The best selling Tequila in the World is Jose Cuervo Especial;
The bestselling Tequila in Mexico is El Jimador Reposado.

Is el Jimador any good ? I just looked at the homepage of my local store and they sell this : I assume it is the same as the one you linked ? Also reposado. For 14,99 €, is that a good deal or not ? I do not really know anything about Tequila. Thank you !

Well as a Mexican TLer, i can tell you that some "Tequileras" (Tequilas Producers) are a bit overrated, for example here in Mexico most people think that Tequila Don Julio is the best Tequila when it actually it isnt (its a good one but is really overrated) only cuz it is pretty expensive and others Tequilas for example the Herradura Selección Suprema is actually way better and a bit less expensive that Don Julio.
By the way dont forget the Tequila is a product with Denomination of Origin and a while ago on the ones mades in Tequila, Jalisco could be called Tequila now there are more places but no far away from Tequila.

I am sorry but are you actually talking about more than 100 € tequila ? Don't get me wrong I am very happy for you but I seem like that would exclude most of us.
i've tried numerous tequilas, being as my best friend is half mexican and from my experience don julio is good, but there are a lot for the same price or cheaper that are better lol. aha toro, 1921, clase azul!
This the the one that you see everywhere here in sweden. If you ask for tequila then there are like a 95% chance they will bring this bottle I'm not sure how it stacks up against the other brands but it gets you wasted that's what counts right?
On April 22 2012 06:42 Weson wrote: I dont how it stacks up against the other brands but it gets you wasted that's what counts right?
No, thats not what counts at all. and that brand is probably one of the least appealing spirits I have ever drunken. I'm not a big fan of tequila in general, but you can do much better than that <3
I have a small bottle of corralejo reposado. Its okay, but as i said, not a huge fan of tequila.
Edit: Also, why does everyone always go on about how they had the weirdest / most unpleasant experiences with tequila? Its just another spirit, it doesnt make you magically more drunk than vodka does.
Tequila is the one spirit that always makes a night go very badly for me. No idea why it happened the first couple of times, but now even the smell makes me think something bad is going to happen! However, I do love Sierra because the cap is a sombrero :D

This stuff is so outrageously bad even compared to discount mexican tequilas. Btw, drink tequila with chili and lemon.

If you're drinking simply to get wasted, there are plenty of of cheaper alternatives. Believe or not, people actually spend decent to outrageous prices on booze because enjoying the taste of a spirit is what counts. Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging if getting wasted is what one wants to do, I'm just simply saying that there are much better cost-effective and better tasting alternatives to drinking a bad spirit.
To try and stay on topic: I do enjoy a good tequila, but it's definitely not my spirit of choice (mainly due to lack of knowledge of whats good for a good price). I think the ones I've seen people consume the most in my area are Cazadores, El Jimador, and Milagro.
While this is true of just about every spirit, my tastebuds feel that the difference between a garbage tequila and a good tequila is one of the greatest. I think the only spirit I hate more than Jose Cuervo (that doesn't come in a plastic bottle) is Bacardi spiced rum. However, just a couple price point steps up from that and the difference just seems so distinct.
Tequila is the only spirit that I personally find appealing just straight up sipping in a shot glass (yes sipping, not chugging, see the top of my post) and as a great base for mixed drinks.
Tequila put me off drinking in university for a good 6months after a night of drunken ridiculousness. My liver appreciates the good that tequila has done for me in the long run... LOL

Almost as important as taste, quality spirits are much less likely to make you sick. Cheap tequila in particular is infamous for making people sick and causing major hangovers. Because the flavor is so unique and the smell is so strong, it's likely to stay with you for a long time. After a couple bad nights with cheap tequilla, you might not even want to be near it anymore.

I completely forgot about that aspect, but it is very true. Off topic, but the only spirit where I would go against the grain with this line of thinking would be Jaegermeister. I never quite understood why that spirit in particular is so notorious for causing bad evenings and morning afters (esp. since its only 70 proof), but maybe its because I actually like the taste of black licorice (mmmmm Ouzo).
I've only ever had patron's reposado, their blanco, and their coffee flavored tequila and i've liked all of them but it's kinda expensive for me. is there anything cheaper that is comparable in quality?
Here in my area of Sweden, Tequila got a pretty bad name, have always wondered why I do enjoy the occasional Shots here and there, but never really found a good brand to keep with, any tips for a "fresch" tequila drinker?
Best tequila I've ever had, first time I didn't feel like puking the second I swallowed it. Me and my buddies ended up drinking the whole bottle within an hour, never found a tequilla quite like that since. Haven't tried don julio yet because of the outragous price here (twice that of jose guervo)
I like how half of the posts are people with bad experiences. Tequila is actually a great liquor. The keys are to get a 100% agave (if it doesn't say it is, more than likely it is 51% agave, which is the lowest amount possible to be called tequila) and to NOT SHOOT IT. Sip it and enjoy the flavor!
Also I want to point out this is the tequila APPRECIATION thread. So the whining posts about it probably don't belong here.
Have a Bottle of Cazadores. It's very smooth and the aroma is refined. After taste is also subtil. Quality really make a huge difference with tequilas.

El Jimador is awsome. Good enough to sip, cheap enough to mix. Quality for cost it doesnt get much better.
I tried Cazadores but found it too buttery/velvety for my tastes. It was good, no doubt, just not what im looking for.

As fate decided, yesterday we drank a lot of sauza anejo (picture in spoiler) + Show Spoiler +
and I just wanted to know of it was a good tequila or not for future references. I mean it tasted good so I would drink it again but I just wanted to ask if it is bad/good and if I can do way better or not.

why is it blue and pink? looks like tequila apple sourz or something.

Since the Blue one is actually Tequila Blanco I assume the bottles themselves are colored?
Good Tequila is actually very nice to just sip instead of shot. Especially when it gets colder outside. Or in the summer when it cools down sitting outside with a good Tequila is great.
To bad the only Tequila's that are readily available here are Don Cruzado (really shitty imo. Don't even want it in a cocktail), Sauza (only good in a cocktail or a shot imo) and Jose Cuervo. The Jose Cuervo Especial is actually very nice for what it is.
If I want a better Tequila I really have to look for it or go to a more specialized shop
On May 03 2012 23:00 FliedLice wrote: So how good Jose Cuervo Especial Silver?

TBH, not great. Its not 100% agave and is a little overpriced for what it is. If you have no other option and just want to make a margarita then go for it, its not AWFUL, but there are many much better tequilas out there for less or equal $$$.
I recomend Eli Jimador or Cazadores as a better place to start that Cuervo.
On another note I picked up a bottle of Agave 99 overproof Anejo on the weekend. Bottle at 49.5% (we like this, more flavor yo) it needs a splash of water, but its darn tasty. You can taste a big bourbon/vanilla influence from the casks, but that agave flavour is not overpowered. Only 50$ for the bottle, its worth a go. Dont put it in a cocktail though

As I said, it's seems to be rather tricky to get those here, eventhough wikipedia wants to tell me that Germany is the 3rd biggest Tequila market worldwide...
But I'm not much of a Tequila guy anyway, personally I prefer Whiskey... Some friends just had the fucked up idea to go all "cinco de mayo" this weekend. So I wanted to pick up something that's at least better than a bottle of Tequila with a freaking sombrero as cap.
Patron is actually what you could consider a alienware laptop fo tequilas. Good, but not worth the money,
In sweden, we had a long tradition of only having shitty mixtos available, (mixto is 51% agave and the rest chepest neutral alcohol you can find). But times are changing and you can get some pretty good stuff nowadays!
Imo, Reposados offer more taste and agave then the anejos, who seem to go too far towards other oakmatured brandy. Ofcourse, it depends on the situation as always. But generally speaking.

it is indeed quite expensive (at least to get in France), I buy it in the airport if possible! But there's a lot of marketing behind it so you get a really nice bottle and can sing along "patron on the rocks and I'm ready for some shots" which is priceless imo :p

Quality of alcohol and hangover has nothing to do with eachother, only alcohol percentage. Not sure you even know what Hangover is, so let me put it simple: In reality there is nothing in the world called hangover, because actually you get dehydrated. on average, if you drink 1 liter of beer(which is ~5 %) 1,3 litres of liquid will come out - as everyone know, when you drink you will pee quite a lot. So there you go, if you knew about what hangover really is, I hope you wouldn't have come up with such a stupid comment.

Content other than alcohol percentage matters. It's why you end up with a minor hangover after 2 bottles of great wine compared a killing hangover by drinking the same amount from a carton. Additives, yeast, fermentation process, amount of synthetic components can all make a difference the next morning.

I used to believe this until I started drinking high quality spirits. I even tested it myself. I drank a whole bottle of 100% agave tequila and went to bed with only a few sips of water. Pretty much no hangover at all. Alternatively, give me 3 or 4 draft beers and I feel like shit for about 18 hours.
I realize thats entirely subjective and is no reason for you to change your opinion; but I experience it for myself on a weekly basis, so I had to change mine.

I don't mind tequila as a finishing drink, after I've already had a few other drinks I can go the rest of the night on tequila shots but really not my first choice on a sober night.
I'm all about the Cadadores. Cheap good 100% agave also, I love this thread because nobody is saying PATRONNNNN lol edit: nevermind, for those of you who did, it's overpriced and overrated
Tequila is the one alcohol I absolutely cant keep down. My ex is Mexican and his family drank tequila at every party. One time they made me take 8 shots and i threw up 7 times. That said, for the few seconds I get to enjoy it while drinking, good tequila is one of the smoothest alcohols I have ever had. I definitely see the appeal.

Dont lash out of someone if you dont know how it works. Quality alcohol is less likely to make you sick due to the reasons that they contain less bad stuff.
When talking about tequila (is slightly different in production method)thou, its important to distinguish what quality he means. Some tequila of good quality are tripledistilled 3 times, witch means they are as pure as it goes when it comes to tequila. However, some quality brands are not and that means they are as bad for you as cheaper brands.
However, as a general rule of thumb, the better the beverage the better the rawmaterial. (For example, 100% agave is better then 51% agave and "cheapest neutral spirit you can find".)
And alochol percentage is not as important compared to what kind of alchol it is. And finally, yes there are something called hungover, it is a legit word, used to describe the symptoms you write. Dont call other people's comment stupid. And if you do, make sure your corrections are flawless.
pretty much how I do things too. Had a bottle or two of Chinaco Anejo that went down smoothly as well. Overall though, I stick to silver for the cleaner agave flavor. For smoke and wood, given the choice I'd go for whisky these days.

This is the worst Tequila I've EVER tasted. For sure.
i have never had a night where things didnt get "interesting" after drinking some tequila....but i cant drink it straight if im sober...gotta have at the bare minimum a buzz going.
I usually go for the Reposado, but with some brands, the Anejo is a nice change of pace. I like the "raw-ness" of the agave taste in the reposado, but the Anejo offers a much more refined, mellowed taste.
The Gran Centenario Anejo is quite good, and you can usually find it pretty cheap ($40 or so, depending on the market). When I'm in a pub, they don't usually have the Gran Centenario, so my fallback is usually Cazadores. Most American pubs will carry it.
I approve of this thread! Lol just picked up my first higher end bottle recently.
Tried some straight over ice with my oldest friend and we both agreed that while it was still most definitely tequila, it was incredibly smooth. Highly recommended to anyone here. When it comes to a mixing tequila though I usually head for my bottle of Lun Azul.

After ralfy (ralfy.com) recently reviewed tequilas too, I have to try some!
This seems to be the only decent one I can get locally:
Is it worth a shot? Reviews seem to be quite ok. Price seems reasonable (< 25€). So far only got Sauza Hornitos for mixing. What else are the usual quality/price recommendations in the 20-40€ range?
Kinda experienced with whisky, a little rum experience. Drinking good spirits pure and at room temperature out of Glencairn glasses usually.

Yes it is worth a shot. My girlfriend likes this stuff, she is Mexican.
I can't stand mixed drinks or beer so whenever I go to parties/drink I always make sure to have a bottle of tequila handy! Nothing goes down smoother for me than a nice tall shot of Mexico's finest!
Had a decent amount of patron and don julio. Had some of this about a year ago, surprised me by how much better it was. I'll be taking notes from this thread..
I bought this tequila when I was in Mexico. Amanecer Ranchero Anejo:
The guy who I bought it from gave me the impression that he was a real tequila connoisseur so I trusted him when he told me that it is legitimate quality tequila (unlike the shitty Jose Cuervo junk). It has won competitions (whatever that means), and it tastes high quality to me (I drink it straight, but I have tasted very few tequilas in my lifetime).
I'm wondering if there are any experts here who could chime in on this tequila.

Never tasted it, but i surely would! Dont trust when they say that this spirit has won many competitions, thats meaningless. This is a legitimate tequila so dont worry about that, but right now there is a debate about what is a more "pure" tequila, where purists try to stay away from Anejo (like your bottle) because the time it matures on oak removes a bit of agavecharacter and makes it to similar to other brandies of with ranciocharacter.
But i would say drink it and enjoy it, thats what i would do! =)
I'd be interested to give a good tequila a try (I mainly drink whisky but I also enjoy a good rum), thinking about Anejo or Extra Anejo. Maybe a whisky enthusiast can give some advice on what to try (I want something to sip).
The one Equity213 mentioned sounded really good (along with the description and the fact I've seen him posting in the whisky thread ). Any other suggestions ?
On another note I picked up a bottle of Agave 99 overproof Anejo on the weekend. Bottle at 49.5% (we like this, more flavor yo) it needs a splash of water, but its darn tasty. You can taste a big bourbon/vanilla influence from the casks, but that agave flavour is not overpowered. Only 50$ for the bottle, its worth a go. Dont put it in a cocktail though

Oh hai!
To be honest I would reccomend trying a reposado first. Anejos and especially extra anejos taste less like tequila and more like bourbon/scotch because of all the cask involvement. If you go straight for an anejo you probably will taste mostly whisky (not to mention they can get pretty pricey). Thats all well and good but the point is to try something new right?
Tequila with less age retains more of that agave flavour. Kind of like peatiness in Islay whisky, sometimes younger is better. Reposados are also versatille because they are good enough to sip on their own, but economical enough to make cocktails with too.
Im no expert yet but Herradura or El Jimador Repo would be my recomendations. I sip em both regularly.
