TL has a tobacco thread, a beer thread, and a whisky thread. However that most delicious of spirits, Tequila, is not getting the same love. This thread is dedicated to discussion and appreciation of Tequila (and other mexican spirits)!
Tequila is a Mexican spirit made from the agave plant whose history dates back to the 16th century. The Aztecs had a beer like beverage made from fermented agave nectar, to which distillation methods (brought over by Spanish Conquistadors) was applied and Tequila was born.
The Blue Agave
To produce tequila the agave is harvested and the large pineapple like hearts (the piñas) are cooked to release the sugars of the plant, which are then fermented in vats, distilled, sometimes aged, then bottled.
Tequila is classified according to the amount of time it spends aging in casks (which may be new oak casks, bourbon casks, wine casks, or even scotch whisky casks):
Blanco: No aging to 2 months Reposado: Aged 2 to 12 months Anejo: Aged 1 to 3 years Extra-Anejo: Aged 3 or more years
Mixto: A Mixto is a Tequila that is not made from 100% Agave, but uses cheaper cane sugars and the like. Jose Cuervo is an example of a Mixto.
The best selling Tequila in the World is Jose Cuervo Especial;
The bestselling Tequila in Mexico is El Jimador Reposado.

Is el Jimador any good ? I just looked at the homepage of my local store and they sell this : I assume it is the same as the one you linked ? Also reposado. For 14,99 €, is that a good deal or not ? I do not really know anything about Tequila. Thank you !

Well as a Mexican TLer, i can tell you that some "Tequileras" (Tequilas Producers) are a bit overrated, for example here in Mexico most people think that Tequila Don Julio is the best Tequila when it actually it isnt (its a good one but is really overrated) only cuz it is pretty expensive and others Tequilas for example the Herradura Selección Suprema is actually way better and a bit less expensive that Don Julio.
By the way dont forget the Tequila is a product with Denomination of Origin and a while ago on the ones mades in Tequila, Jalisco could be called Tequila now there are more places but no far away from Tequila.

I am sorry but are you actually talking about more than 100 € tequila ? Don't get me wrong I am very happy for you but I seem like that would exclude most of us.
i've tried numerous tequilas, being as my best friend is half mexican and from my experience don julio is good, but there are a lot for the same price or cheaper that are better lol. aha toro, 1921, clase azul!
This the the one that you see everywhere here in sweden. If you ask for tequila then there are like a 95% chance they will bring this bottle I'm not sure how it stacks up against the other brands but it gets you wasted that's what counts right?

No, thats not what counts at all. and that brand is probably one of the least appealing spirits I have ever drunken. I'm not a big fan of tequila in general, but you can do much better than that <3
I have a small bottle of corralejo reposado. Its okay, but as i said, not a huge fan of tequila.
Edit: Also, why does everyone always go on about how they had the weirdest / most unpleasant experiences with tequila? Its just another spirit, it doesnt make you magically more drunk than vodka does.
Tequila is the one spirit that always makes a night go very badly for me. No idea why it happened the first couple of times, but now even the smell makes me think something bad is going to happen! However, I do love Sierra because the cap is a sombrero :D

This stuff is so outrageously bad even compared to discount mexican tequilas. Btw, drink tequila with chili and lemon.

If you're drinking simply to get wasted, there are plenty of of cheaper alternatives. Believe or not, people actually spend decent to outrageous prices on booze because enjoying the taste of a spirit is what counts. Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging if getting wasted is what one wants to do, I'm just simply saying that there are much better cost-effective and better tasting alternatives to drinking a bad spirit.
To try and stay on topic: I do enjoy a good tequila, but it's definitely not my spirit of choice (mainly due to lack of knowledge of whats good for a good price). I think the ones I've seen people consume the most in my area are Cazadores, El Jimador, and Milagro.
While this is true of just about every spirit, my tastebuds feel that the difference between a garbage tequila and a good tequila is one of the greatest. I think the only spirit I hate more than Jose Cuervo (that doesn't come in a plastic bottle) is Bacardi spiced rum. However, just a couple price point steps up from that and the difference just seems so distinct.
Tequila is the only spirit that I personally find appealing just straight up sipping in a shot glass (yes sipping, not chugging, see the top of my post) and as a great base for mixed drinks.
