For those wondering where the tea party went, look no further than what just happened in Indiana with Luger getting the boot.

Ugh, you know, I don't even seem to care about who exactly is President anymore. It's just an insignificant name to me. Don't call me a radical conspiracy theorist yet, but I do believe our president is mostly for show. Meh.

It's best to think of the president as a rudder and not a jet engine. He can steer the country, but the flow of the wind and currents are going a different direction, he's not going to make it far (or may even go backwards).

Why exactly is this two party only system in the US in the first place? I never understood this seems so limiting and i don't see how the whole spectrum of political believes can work in just two parties. Ok these days most politicians seem to be bought by big companies anyways and you don't really have what i would call a left. (Seriously what you guys call lefties are moderates or slightly slightly left in most other countries)

Winner takes all is the reason.

If you win a state you win all of that state, 51-49 is the same as 100-0 so smaller parties that would otherwise get some votes from everything are infact totaly useless forcing the political spectrum into 2 sides just to have a chance.

I also want to point out that one of the reasons why the US is winner-takes-all is because the US has a Constitutional Republic system rather than a Parliamentary system. Our states have substantially more power than local regions in other countries (a byproduct of what the founding fathers wanted, for better or for worse). It's most evident in our electoral college voting system and the fact that our Senate is quite powerful.

George Washington also despised political parties... He had hoped for all independent representatives.

Well that didn't work out so well did it ? Its created two gigantic political parties ... Probably made for a worse system in the end . Not to mention your electoral process and system needs major reforming/retooling.

Romney pretty much wraps up the nomination tonight.

Also, North Carolina has decided to be the leader of Jim Crow 2.0

Just another sad chapter of American history. In 20 years, even the sponsor of this retarded amendment knows it will be repealed.

Makes me dislike religion even more with their hypocrites.

yeah, my home state of NC just passed the first amendment to the state's constitution that effectively bans anything other than man+woman marriage.

I honestly didnt think this bill had a chance... This is 2012, is it not? How can people still be so devoted to this sort of bigotry? And even more scary is the question of how these people can hold so much power that they are able to directly control every single person's lives?

People are saying that we voted to ban gay marriage. While that's partially true, this isn't even about gay marriage. This is much larger. Unless you fall into the very specific category of a man and woman who are married, you are not considered linked in any way by the law. No more civil unions, no more common law marriages. The repercussions to this are going to be very far reaching and very negative.

On the positive side, I'm guessing more parents will be getting a substantially larger refund check for their children since they are now officially single (/toungeincheek)

I'm interested to see how Obama reacts as far as his hard stance on gay marriage is concerned now that one of his crucial swing states just voted this way... He is slowly slipping into ambiguity in his speeches, and it's slightly concerning.

Just wait until defense attorneys start citing this stupid amendment. Going to be interesting to see how the legal system handles this.

You ned need to take more responsibility. The truth is, the gay marriage opponents have earned their right to be elected and pass these laws. Their demographics are the ones who actually put the effort into mobilising and campaigning (whether it be preached from the pedastals in their Churches, or talking about how wrong atheists are at their Bible studies). Are they bigoted? Yes. But are they more dedicated and put more effort into caring about these issues than most other people? Very yes. The truth is, unless you're a part of some rainbow/feminist gay rights group, you've probably not done a lot to convince and educate the people around you about how important it is to actually get out and vote. Most people I know just say things like: "Who cares if it's Romney or Obama, it won't make a difference anyway." They have only themselves to blame.

Probably a local third party. Most states have one, particularly when they have unique issues they can cling to such as coal mining in west virginia. They rarely take elections though.

Very interesting piece today on CNN from senior Democrat strategist, former Clinton campaign lead strategist, and long-time commentator James Carville: Wake up Democrats; you could lose

He's got some very interesting points. And he definetly knows what he's talking about when it comes to presidential campaigns. Quick excerpt:

The polling? Not that encouraging. The latest Democracy Corps poll was 47-47. The Real Clear Politics average of polls has the president up a whopping three-tenths of a percentage point. And I am hearing the garbage that Democratic donors are telling Democratic fundraisers ..."Obama has it in the bag."

Newsflash: Nothing is in the bag. Nothing can be taken for granted.

I think this is key. Considering that Romney has just come off a very nasty primary election and really hasn't started campaiging in full force for the general election, it's pretty surprising that the two are neck-and-neck in the polls. An incumbant is usually expected to lead the polls this early on. Anyway, take a look at the article, if nothing else Carville is a pretty funny guy.

You're not going to see any Democrat who is actually intelligent and involved in national politics claim that Obama "has it in the bag" because that demotivates voters. So his comments aren't really surprising and in reality Obama might very well have it in the bag. Just commenting on the fact that political strategists paint the picture however it would most benefit their party.

Has the Democratic campaign even really started? How have the debates been?
The Republic nomination has barely finished. The general campaigns will be barely starting. Talk about being early to say anything about the outcome.

Actually Carville's point is just that, the election hasn't been decided and there's no guarentee that Obama is going to win. He's arguing that Romney is a pretty weak and very beatable candidate, but Obama has got to get his campaign in order and start hitting the right talking points.

I suggest you actually read the article, it's pretty interesting.

it doesn't need any major reforming/retooling at all. the system works fine, even with the two political parties, probably because the two-party system. george washington just didn't foresee the inevitablity of the two-party system and didn't understand the benefits of it.

Well, things are about to get quite interesting:

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_OBAMA_GAY_MARRIAGE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

JULIE PACE
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says he now supports same-sex marriage, ending months of equivocation on a subject with powerful election-year consequences.

Obama says he has concluded that it is important for him to affirm that he thinks same-sex couples should be able to get married. He says he came to the conclusion over the course of several years of talking to family and friends.

Obama has previously said his personal views of gay marriage were evolving, a stance that frustrated gay rights supporters.

Obama revealed his support for gay marriage in an interview with ABC News.
It will be interesting to see how the Republicans respond to this.

My guess is that they won't. They'll avoid the issue, which iswhat Obama wanted to do before Biden's gaffe forced him into this.
