In a perfect world, after his thank yous and yes we cans and I love my wife and so on, I want him to say something like, "the popular vote has demonstrated that there are many people who are dissatisfied with America, and with me. Though we do not see eye to eye [with those people], I know we all want a better America. We all want the same thing. I will be the man that will help America get back on its feet, I will help all people, because whether or not you supported me, we are all brothers here." Or something like that... I'm sorry... weird tangent.

But the current conservatives are going to need a loss like this - which, while close, never should have happened given the economy - and perhaps another after that until they realize that their stances are getting out of touch. I expect that, eventually, the Republican Party will reform either in a more libertarian direction or into a more moderate version of social conservatism (maybe something like what Salam & Douthat seem to want). This current positioning will only become more unpopular as time goes on.

Oh noes, more left-leaning hispanics (not that I'm an expert on the voting tendencies of a population that can't vote). tbh most hispanics are conservatives...
