why? dvorak keyboards are a hassle. i suppose the advantage of typing faster are true though. but remember you can only type as fast as your fingers can move. the goal with dvorak is that the keys you use the most are the closest to your fingers. it really only helps a lot with people that can very quickly move their fingers along a keyboard like without even thinking, because then it becomes second nature and those most common keys are constantly being pressed. if your fingerspeed isn't really good, i don't think it will be that big of a difference, and they are a hassle so i wouldn't do it if i were you ><. i can't imagine having to go to a different configuration because some program or some guy didnt have a dvorak.... imagine how slow you'd be then.

Here is what I found, for those of you that are just as confused as I was: Dvorak Keyboard ![]() What is it? The Dvorak keyboard is an alternative typewriter keyboard that was designed to replace the popular QWERTY keyboard. Inventor August Dvorak developed the Dvorak keyboard by placing letters next to each other that were commonly occurred next to each other in words. The Dvorak keyboard was found to actually increase the accuracy of typists by almost 50 percent and upped their speed by 15-20 percent. Give me an example! So why wasn't the Dvorak keyboard instantly adopted as the new standard? Two reasons. First, it was 1930 - the first year of the Great Depression - and people didn't have the money to replace perfectly good typewriters. Second, typists were already familiar with the more clumsy QWERTY keyboards and didn't want to learn a new one.

its not really useful to learn though, mostly because of the fact that QWERTY is used basically everywhere, and the advantages of dvorak are slight

Until then, stickies on my keyboard or popping off keys and swapping them just doesn't seem appealing to me. Good point, I hope in future there will be affordable versions of the Optimus Keyboard: ![]() http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/

That's true, but according to other tests done, the advantage of Dvorak users were less than 5%. So I guess there's a controversy. Even though many feel that the principles on which the Dvorak keyboard is based should make it superior to the older QWERTY, there is divergent evidence about whether the logic of the keyboard actually translates into faster typing. Although studies performed by Dvorak and his disciples indicate a large advantage in typing speed (40%), other studies performed for the US General Services Administration and independent ergonomics investigations indicate either a small or nonexistent advantage (less than 5%). Edit - screwed up my quotes

As long as you are in the mentality that you are on a different layout, you should be ok. It's like learning a second language. You don't forget your first no matter how long you are away from it. Also, when you get into the professional world you have generally two computers you are going to use: Your home computer and your work computer. Both of which can be customized how you like as long as 1) You're an IT person or 2) You know the IT person. The truth is, though, you aren't going to find your standard businesman using dvorak to type. However if one of our secretaries came to me and said that she wanted to change her keyboard layout, I'd log her in the administrator account and let her do it. Besides your work and home computer, I really don't know too many other keyboards you're going to be using. Yes you'll occasionally be on a friend's computer and sometimes you might be doing a search at Border's or the Library but beyond that, it's very minimal.

But if, on the other hand, you work in an office or something, you should be able to choose a keyboard that suits you. I type with a rate up to 10-11 characters per second and I guess switching to Dvorak wouldn't give me any benefits, since I seem to be limited more by my brain than the speed of my fingers.
