I was wondering, what other shoes can you guys suggest that would look very simple in a casual setting? (please don't suggest white) (giving pictures would be awesome) :D

I might get some good looking shoes in Zara-man, since the last pair I bought was okay but is now kinda tattered (still use them thought).

I love derby leather shoes. Get a classic simple plain leather shoe like these in black or brown, you'll never have to follow 'trends'.You can dress them up in trousers or dress them down in chinos. Make sure to take care of the leather though. I use a pair of Doc Marten's in this style, extremely comfortable and I've quite a few compliments for them. If you want something even more versatile you can go with loafers or boat shoes. Here's a good article on Askmen on the only kinds of shoes you should wear in my opinion. http://www.askmen.com/fashion/fashiontip_60/80_fashion_advice.html

I agree with the premise but not the example. The shoes in the picture are pretty ugly and have an ugly clunky rubber sole. The idea of a nice plain brown leather shoe is a good one though, wingtips are also a good option and make the shoe a little more casual. Also as I suggested on the last page, Clark desert boots are a great shoe for casual settings, that will bring variety from white Lacoste sneakers (assumption.)

I personally own these (clarks craftmasters us) and I can just say they are amazing; comfortable, good looking and they go with absolutely anything.
I've worn them with jeans and a shirt, chinos and a blazer or even a suit. You just can't go wrong with them.

wingtips are also a good option and make the shoe a little more casual.

I've read that a lot and it seems like everybody agrees, but it's counter-intuitive to me. Is there an explanation as to why?
To me, no wingtips = plain, more simple, more casual and wingtips = fancy.
I personally don't like how wingtips look because I kinda feel like they are ostentatious/showy.

I have a couple of theories about this, but I'm not sure any of them are correct.

1. Wingtips are generally brogues (the little holes in the front). Brogue is and scottish (or celtic or something) word for bog or marsh. Because they often walked through that kind of stuff they put little holes in their shoes, so the water could flow out: hence "brogues".

2. Wingtips are usually brown and the old english rule is "no brown after six" (feel free to violate this, unless your having dinner with english nobility), so generally brown shoes are the day-shoes.

3. With the most formal of attire (tuxedo/evening suit or tails/morning suit) you generally wear plain black shoes. No embellishments, nothing.

But generally in any non-tuxedo/tails setting shoes like the ones I posted are fine. I've worn them to balls (student balls, so no black tie dresscode), to birthday parties and to semi-official functions.
Hope this helped at least a little.

I don't know if this is the right thread to ask this, but since this is a men's fashion thread... I've been looking for graffiti shoes to give my gf's brother as a gift. Would anyone know which brand (or store) in the US sells good ones?

In general the closer something is to what someone in an old school dress military uniform would wear the dressier it is. This is a good read on what makes a shoe formal and what makes a shoe more casual if you are interested. You basically have it backwards though, "fancy" shoes with more details are considered less formal because, in a formal setting you would be dressed to avoid calling attention to yourself. For black tie for example everyone should be wearing one of two shoes, either a black plain toe oxford or black opera pumps. There are no other proper options.

@Zoesan those shoes are ok, but IMO they are to informal for a suit

Since we were/are talking about wingtips, Allen Edmonds McAllister is on sale between now and end of month for $249. It's a decent discount for firsts, and they rarely go down below $200.

I'm probably going to pick up a pair of walnut or merlot, and be done with shoes for a few years (hopefully).

So I took everyones advice and got a pair of brownish leather desert boots. They aren't from a brand I had heard of, but I was shopping in Brunswick Street (a nice little indie street in Melbourne-great clothes) and saw these and liked the feel of them after trying them on. I didn't go with clarks, not because I don't think they look great, but because using a quick search, it appeared the desert boot I was after wasn't available in my region. The brand is "Wild Rhino" and I think they look quite good. Have not had a chance yet to wear them but I got a pair or chinos and dark denim pants aswell. The only downside is that the tread from the sides looks a bit too "work" boot-like, but either that will wear down or I will just get over it.

Solid looking IMO. I also know nothing about the brand but they look good and that's a nice color choice. The only thing I don't like is the contrast stitching

I need a new dress coat. Can TL give me any advice?

Basically I wear a suit to work most days and in the winter I need to wear a coat with it obviously. I would like to get something suitable to wear with a suit and tie but still okay to wear with more casual clothes. My current coat is getting pretty worn and I want to get something new and a bit nicer. My current coat is a full-length but I've noticed that most coats nowadays are not that long anymore so maybe that's not the style anymore.

I'd say my ideal price range is up to about $600, but I'd probably be willing to go up to $1000 if I felt like I was getting a good value. I hope to get something I can wear for many years so it makes sense spend a bit more to get something I really like.

Any thoughts on how to dress to go along with a shaved head? I'm 23 and I've been balding since I was 16. I decided when I was 18 to just get rid of it all rather than try to style the quickly thinning wisps.

I'm really tall, 6'3, and my weight fluctuates between around 180 and 210.

Here is my most recent attempt to look good(new year's party, I'm on the right):

@Tarrius: I'm going to be honest with you there is a lot wrong with that outfit. Vest without a jacket makes you look like a waiter. If you are going to wear a tie you should button the top button of the shirt. Ties are formal unbutton top button is casual avoid mismatching. The mismatched formality appears again with the black dress belt and jeans. The jeans appear to fit pretty good, the fit on everything else is looks pretty poor. The final thing is the tie has to much going on try to stick to solids, basic patterns like dots or two color stripes.

I don't think you have to dress any different because your bald. They may be subtle things you could do differently but you should get the basics down first.

@ziggurat: I personally prefer to keep coats 3/4 length at maximum at most opposed to a full trench. What type of coat were you thinking? Peacoat? Car coat? trench? All are appropriate for wearing with suits, the first thing I would do is narrow down which type of coat you want.

Probably a trench-style coat. I am picturing something single-breasted, probably black or charcoal, probably wool or a wool/cashmere blend.

Here is one that looks good to my eye. However not really in my price range.

I'll say, thing is really expensive lol. Regardless, I think it looks good. Charcoal is a pretty interesting color in that it goes with almost any other color. If you can find something similar at a lower price range. Couldn't really find a good one quickly online, but I'm sure there's something given a little more research.

Thanks, yeah I think they look better IRL than in this picture, but I don't think the stitching is too bad, but you probably know more than me haha.

Shoes are great. However, the blue coat... meh? The grey sweater trumps it immediately. Also, I'd wear everything in that one pic but that camel coat. Even though all the colors are neutral, it hardly goes together. That shade of brown is tough to work with. Huge tope-colored items like that are rough to make seem not bland. The slacks are the best thing in the picture, well-complemented by the vest. Those are classic items, the coat seems try-hard to me.

Here's a crappier designed peacoat that still looks better because of the color: + Show Spoiler +
