I don't want to look like a business douchebag or management asshole, so I'd love to lessen the "impact" of wearing a black jacket. Sporting half a week's worth of stubble and wearing jeans doesn't seem to cut it. I like it personally, but not with a three button jacket. A simple black crew-neck under a two button sport coat is a good middle ground. I would recommend wearing a flannel plaid or something along those lines. If you aren't stuck with the black jacket then just don't wear it. Wear a nice OCBD untucked, or in this weather a nice sweater. It will suite you better in more situations than an ugly band shirt under a nice jacket. Also, a week's worth of stubble is a beard, no?

the recent bits of information/advice in this thread.. anyhow On November 26 2013 09:59 phosej wrote: Okay so I got my land's end chelseas and they're actually not that bad. My major gripe is that the ankle opening is kinda big and my denim is pretty tapered so I have to pull it over the boots which is kinda annoying. And the pant hem rides up when I sit down and when I stand back up it comes back down and stacks weirdly unless I adjust it. Does this happen with all chelseas/sidezips/ankle boots or should I just be looking at different makers? Idk if I should keep them or not as a beater pair until I find something I really like Pic: + Show Spoiler + you mean the shaft right? it's natural that boots with wider shaft openings will force a skinny/tapered pant to behave like that. however, this goes against the entire style of a chelsea boot so I'd recommend returning them. if you're still interested in having a less constrictive stylization of pant/boot combinations, you should probably look into backzips/sidezips/spiralzips; these allow you to tuck the hem into the shaft, covering it, or simply do nothing and let it naturally settle.

Things I would be considering; - warmth - bulkiness/practicality for packing - doesn't get destroyed by rain/snow etc Edit: Advice on shoes for the circumstances listed above would also be appreciated.

something like this http://www.rei.com/product/855842/columbia-glacier-to-glade-ii-interchange-3-in-1-insulated-jacket-mens with a hard shell and an insulated liner for shoes idk some kind of tough hiking boots. pack extra wool socks but it also depends on where you're backpacking through exactly.

still wouldn't go with down if it's raining. it'll take too long to dry. i think a multiple layered jacket is still your best bet for functionality. you just won't need a super crazy one. just put on a thermal base layer for the extreme cold

If you're looking for a pair of boots for actual winter conditions you might want to consider another brand as most Red Wings are "dress boots" that aren't really for poor conditions. Otherwise I think the Iron ranger is fairly rugged and you can always go to a shoe guy to add a winter specific topper for the sole if necessary.

I'll probably step in some slush and snow for daily travel but would be inside for most of the day.

Yeah I mean the shaft. Can you elaborate on what you mean by the styling of chelseas? if you're still interested in having a less constrictive stylization of pant/boot combinations, you should probably look into backzips/sidezips/spiralzips; these allow you to tuck the hem into the shaft, covering it, or simply do nothing and let it naturally settle. Yeah, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I know there was some discussion of MMM side zips on yoox which I would love to have, but do you have any other boot suggestions for me that are more readily available? Budget ~$300, or more maybe

your picture seems fine, but obviously you're more aware of the problem than what's shown, so if the large shaft circumference is really bothering you, they should probably returned. I'm not really sure about boots at that pricepoint. MMM on yoox frequent goes anywhere between 250-350, anything more than that is not worth buying. Guidi sidezips/backzips, CCP tornados/sidezips are great if you have a more generous budget.
