Wear boots and change (or get boots that can handle snow and still be appropriate)

i linked the r/watches buying guide before and i highly recommend that http://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/wiki/buyingguide regardless do some research before investing in a watch. learn a little bit about the movement at least, the skagen website doesnt even say if its quartz. i assume "imported" means that skagen doesn't develop the movement itself (aka the mechanism for why the watch works). lack of origin = crap shoot. you dont know if its quality swiss imported or china imported. research on r/watches: http://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/ncgxo/brand_guide_skagen/ main points: - HK based movement (aka cheap), quartz - nice designs (unique, not diver, very slim) - quality is not very good, especially at the $150 price range I like what this guy says about it I can actually see the appeal of Skagen. It's someone who doesn't really care about watches, but they care about having a watch, and more important: wearing a watch that doesn't look like a diver. Skagen are cheap and neat. there's also watchuseek if you want more in depth research, or want to look up specific models - how much do you care about watches? do you just want one for the sake of having one, do you enjoy horology, or are you interested in starting a collection...? If you just want one, and you think this fits the bill for what you want, go for it. if you want one that'll last a good amount of time and feel like a good investment, don't do it also we have a watch thread on TL

Thanks for the info! I'll check that out as it sounds like I can get better quality for that price. I don't care that much about watches, although I would like it to last a long time. I've always worn a wristwatch of some sort, and it's pretty instinctive for me to check my wrist for time even in the cell phone age ![]()

Whether to go tan or black. I like the added flare of a tan jacket, and overall prefer it by itself to the black. However I plan to pair it with other outerwear such as a light hooded sweater, and for this purpose I don't think the tan works as well as black. I'm afraid tan will limit the colors I would be able to pair with it. Is this a legitimate concern? Looking at this specifically right now + Show Spoiler + ![]() Thoughts on leather jackets in general welcome Oh also I've been sitting on this 1k post for over a year for some reason

Since I got a job and quit school I've finally been able to afford some clothes. Hadn't gone shopping for clothing in three years, and hadn't had any money buy nice things in over 7. I commute to work using public transit (traffic in the bay area is shit during commute hours, bart is faster), this means about 15 minutes of walking each direction, and if I head to downtown SF or rock climbing afterwards I can reach about an hour of walking a day, and all during the chilly mornings and evenings. I've purchased a number of OCBD's, some waffle weave, and flannel long sleeve shirts. These layer over my collection of under armor t-shirts, and underneath my lightweight fleece/technical coat. I typically wear a fleece scarf as well to keep my neck warm. I dress to be comfortable and look good doing it, and I think a nice scarf is both practical and fashionable. Fleece is breathable and insulates even when wet, however it does a poor job breaking the wind. I will be replacing my fleece/nylon jacket with a trench, and on cold days I'll probably wear both. San Francisco is all about layers, in the winter/spring it can be below freezing at 7am, and then 65+ in the afternoon and you need to be able to keep up. I'll post some pictures when I find the box with my camera in it (just moved). Oh, and I got a 504 wool flat cap in claret. Also, I have a "date" with a girl I met at the climbing gym, she wants to climb together and get dinner after. I need some advice on a fashionable functional bag that can carry my gym clothes and climbing gear. I need to be able to carry my laptop for work, and my gym clothes and climbing harness. I think waxed canvas would probably be the most practical material, it can take a beating and will look good for years. I think I'd be okay with a separate bag for my laptop, but either way is fine. If you have any suggestions that would be awesome!

My grandpa died almost 2 years ago and he ALWAYS wore cabbie hats (they're called a million other things as well) They were kind of his thing. While he was a hard working guy that never gave a damn about fashion it was sort of part of his signature look. Everyday except at church he wore blue dickies, a flannel shirt, and a cabbie hat everywhere. Now I was extremely close to him so I've been toying with the idea of keeping that tradition alive. About me,31, 6'2", bigger guy, don't have measurements but 36x32 generally in pants, could stand to lose a few lbs. I've been balding forever and I've made peace with that so not really looking for a hat for the sake of covering anything. In fact I've never been big on hats on the whole, never wore baseball caps growing up, I don't have any hats except a stocking cap because I live in MN where it gets cold as hell. I'm a pretty standard guy. I wear jeans and T shirts 99.99999999% of the time. I'll dress up decent when going out, though my partying days are long behind me. I'm pretty no frills, no accessories. I'd like to bring the look back to pay homage to him while not coming off like a hipster doing it for some sense of irony. I guess I'm looking for ideas or thoughts on the issue. Suggestions? I don't want it to be like some designer thing where I'm looking to show off some brand or anything. Its an old school working man look and I think that's kind of the beauty of it. Check out the Kongol 504 in canvas or wool (maybe look at the 507 as well). My grandfather wore his black wool flat cap for decades, when he passed away I thought the same thing to myself. I decided against it because I was a student at the time and doing poorly in school. I started working harder and was able to get myself a good job. Now that I'm working hard and supporting my family I think it's time to start wearing the hat. Also, it gets cold in the morning and the hat helps me stay comfortable. I'm 6'2" and skinny (140lbs) and I've gotten a number of compliments on my hat. Unless you wear it like a beret it's not much of a hipster hat. Haven't seen very many of them here on the west coast, but from what I've read they're quite common east of the rockies.

What's your take on Converse All-Stars shoes on grown men (25+)? Does it look too young, even childish? I'm trying some right now and I'm not too sure how I feel about them. On one hand it does feel kinda young in a good way (like, giving off a relaxed and casual kinda vibe), on the other hand I wouldn't want to look like a kid :D One thing is sure, it doesn't look very much manly imo, but I wasn't intending to go for "manly" with this kind of shoes. Maybe I'll take some pictures to show you how it looks on me (I'm wearing a brown pair with slim fit black chinos, so it's pretty neutral anyway). From what I read online and see outside, converse shoes are pretty much still fashionable, but I'm seeing them much more on young folks (18 -) or girls rather than on men, so to speak. They didn't cost me much anyway, they were on discount on ebay at 30$.

I only wear my Converse with clean, tidy jeans, and in general with a shirt (not the kind of shirt you'll wear with a suit mind you, more like this kind of shirts + Show Spoiler + What I would avice against, however, is white converse (which are definitely more sportswear, and therefore will make you look younger) and wearing converse with baggy clothes or even large cargo pants (because suddenly you'll like a sk8er boi :p). That's my opinion, take it with a grain of salt ![]()

In the engineering community around SF converse are pretty popular. Most of us are young and relaxed, we don't have too much to worry about and converse are comfortable so we wear them. High-tops are definitely less casual than the low-tops, and more comfortable these days. Black all-star high-tops with a nice pair of jeans and a plaid flannel shirt is what I wear to work, and I'm more formally dressed than anyone else in engineering. TL;DR: What's the context?

I don't want to look like a business douchebag or management asshole, so I'd love to lessen the "impact" of wearing a black jacket. Sporting half a week's worth of stubble and wearing jeans doesn't seem to cut it.

Lighter color leather jackets are a pain in the ass and look funny when wet. Something else to consider. Get a classy bomber jacket. Don't get one that has all sorts of bullshit frills on it unless you have money to burn. A good black leather jacket can be your most versatile piece of clothing that you can wear over casual clothes or over dressy stuff. Also, don't be afraid to spend some extra money to get a really good leather. You'll thank me later when tons of girls want to hold your arm and stroke the leather.
