Doubt he wouldn't veto by sheer merit of the upcoming election. This bill has to get through Congress though first. Also the Supreme Court can review it and shut it down. Obama can say things, that doesn't mean he'll follow through with them after he has a nice meeting with some lobbyists to change his mind. *Edit* Which is true with any modern president.

How this bill can even be considered a good idea is beyond me. Killing the golden goose to get to the egg. Much of the innovation and wealth was because of the internet and freedom of sharing information. Not the other way around.

These bills are just ridiculous if passed not only will they devastate freedoms but they will damage the already damaged economy.

Megaupload had some artists (P Diddy, Will.i.am, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West among others) make a promo song for the site; UMG issues a takedown notice on it for copyright infringement, even though it doesn't infringe on it's copyrights: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111209/11491817023/bunch-riaa-label-artists-endorse-megaupload-as-riaa-insists-its-rogue-site.shtml http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20111209/14234917026/universal-music-issues-questionable-takedown-megaupload-video-that-featured-their-artists.shtml http://torrentfreak.com/universal-censors-megaupload-song-gets-branded-a-rogue-label-111210/ Felt this was relevant to the thread. Edit: The "song", it's so bad it's pretty hilarious. http://www.megavideo.com/?v=NFS30PZO

SOPA is likely to pass the house committee this Thursday, meaning it is open to a vote at any time. IF it dies in the committee however, it is unlikely it will see the light of day again. Make your calls, spread the word on facebook, twitter, etc. http://americancensorship.org/ Provides form letters and a service to help in calling in to your congressmen. Call in, it takes a few minutes at most and will help save your freedom to view content like TeamLiquid.

For the supreme court to be able to shut it down it has to reach the court which means somebody has to challenge it and it has to get appealed to higher and higher courts. This process would take months if not years and by then our favorite sites would possibly already be shut down. I think its better if everyone just tells their representatives that if this bill passes they will no longer be receiving our vote. That way they will vote it down and we won't have to worry about it anymore. I agree though, that if Obama were to pass this bill he would seal his fate to lose the upcoming election.

Video Makes me feel a little better to see that there's others against this, I'm scared for the internet future of this country now. But the companies are the ones with the $$$ which seems to be the only thing Congress cares about these days ![]()

I don't have the link and I can't really go find it atm, but I think it was Switzerland who stopped a similar law from passing. The committee in Switzerland found that online piracy actually has minimal effect on the income of the music/entertainment industry. I remember it has something to do with that the people who pirate/download stuff online tend to spend more money on games/movies through legal channels in the first place.

Thank you for your consideration and I hope you make the right choice (whether that be my choice is up to you and your fellow congressmen to decide). Sincerely, xxxxxxxxxxxx I just sent this to my congressman in regards to the SOPA act.
