So, if you want to see this hopefully veto'd email you local Democratic(NOT Republican for very obvious reasons) senator and house representative, and tell him/her to remind Obama of what he said to the dictatorships regarding censorship.
Tell Democratic people, for the simple reason of they have no choice but to make a passing mention to the president, else their seat may be lost in the next elections for not keeping to their word. There are opponents to this bill in each of the political parties. It would be irresponsible to keep your calls/emails to yourself rather than sending it to a republican just because they're not democrat. I never said emailing your Republican rep is a bad idea. I just said don't do it if you want to see a democrat veto this. The reason behind this is republicans have nothing held against them. They have a clean slate, regardless of opposition to the bill. Sure the more opposing the bill the merrier, but in the end it is up to a DEMOCRAT president to veto it should it get that far. That's why I said don't bother emailing your republican rep. Republicans just don't have any real say in what the democrats do and vice versa really.
SO, if you want this stopped before it reaches Obama, email every rep you know. If you are hinging on a last minute veto, make sure to send extra to those Democrat reps.
Sorry if my initial statement was super unclear, which it seems like it was >_<

Saying you should only e-mail democrats makes sense considering they control 2/3 of the branches (ignoring of course the factual nature of other bills that essentially are identical that would control other areas of your life as much that democrats approve of, though this is off topic).
If it does pass, what stops you from shutting down foxnews.com, cnn.com, msnbc.com, or whitehouse.gov? Create a post infringing on a copyright, take a picture, and even if the site deletes it they would still get shut down. Which big companies are supposedly doing this? Are their websites so secure you can't hack them and put up information which would get their websites shut down? Even if the bill passes it wouldn't take many people to absolutely destroy every single website on the entire internet. What if ebay, google, and yahoo both went down permenantly. The NY stock exchange went down.

So did, or when does this go to vote? Is their any more news on it?

We need a new political party or something. + Show Spoiler + Because you pretty much have to be retarded to go into politics.
Which is why our laws and reps etc are all fucking stupid as hell and corrupt.

I feel bad for Google if this passes... They're going to get so much blackmail from other companies to pay them big bucks in exchange for this.

Isn't Obama going to veto this bill?

I do not believe in a fate that falls on men however they act; but I do believe in a fate that falls on them unless they act.

Basically, if you angered to the wrong people who have access to the judicial system, then they would use this law to shut down your site. Yeah, basically don't piss off people/organizations with a lot of money behind them.
WMG could easily use this law to shutdown Teamliquid, Reddit, Youtube and a lot of other sites. Look how much money and effort they have put into lawsuits against ISPs, and closing youtube videos.

This is a terrible law, and if it goes through China would have more internet freedom than you guys. I would do everything I can to protest against it if I was still living in the US.
|
I really hope this doesn't go through.

If this goes through, I'm moving to Canada. I don't care if I have to wait 2 months for my free healthcare, or deal with 6 month winters. I can handle that more than I can handle this shit.

This is just so damn tragic.

The OP sounds like it might be exaggerating things a bit, but to be honest I don't know enough about the bill to say one way or the other.
What I will say is, the fight against government assaults on liberty is a never ending battle which must be remembered and waged by every generation. It is only natural for a government to propose itself ever more power and control, day by day, and it is up to the people to repeatedly prevent it from happening.
This bill is one such example. It's good to contact your representative, but it's even better to contact the people who proposed these types of things and tell them you will support their opponent next election.
|
this is pretty messed up.. theres no way this can pass
|
It hasnt passed yet. It was referred to a subcommittee of the House Judicial Committee so it might not even come to vote.
Interesting article from al jazeera: http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2011/11/20111116141248301243.html
worldwide opinions are starting to get more publicity on this subject now.. and its unanimously negative of course. this thing is getting more difficult to pass =]

If this bill passes, I will move to sweden and renounce my US citizenship as soon as I am financially capable of doing so.
No, I'm not kidding.

Unfortunately, that's a little utopian. The people who propose these bills are doing so because of corporate interests, and people are not in the equation. They want money and monpoloies, not the popular vote (since that doesn't even matter anymore. Lobbying is so corrupt and lopsided that corporate interests are what control american policymaking, not the citizens or even the politicians themselves)
So they don't have to care. They'll buy out whoever is in office anyways.

Guys...read this, this is important
As the House of Representatives opens hearings on SOPA, the worst piece of Internet legislation in American history, it has rejected all submissions and testimony from public interest groups and others who oppose the bill.
Irony Alert: The House is holding hearings on sweeping Internet censorship legislation this week -- and it's censoring the opposition! The bill is backed by Hollywood, Big Pharma, and the Chamber of Commerce, and all of them are going to get to testify at the hearing.
But the bill's opponents -- tech companies, free speech and human rights activists, and hundreds of thousands of Internet users -- won't have a voice.

Not 100% if this is valid but if this is true...

Well, I am glad I lived through the Internets best times until this bill passes, I had so much fun! Now I guess it's time to get serious again.
