By the way, for those who are just getting into single malt, I strongly suggest checking out the classic malts collection.

This one I got. They are all high quality, and gives you a broad tasting pleasure.

im just starting to get into finer whiskey, any suggestions on some that can get me started?

well depends what kind you prefer or if you just wanna try some of different styles. for the latter for example wild turkey (rare breed pref)or a four roses 100proof,elijah craig(sb 18y is grreat) for a intense sweet bourbon and a ardbeg 10y or laphroig 10y for the opposite heavy smoke scotch side . and if you havent checked it glenfiddich 12y is standart but rightfully so, always good to have at home.

also all i named are very affordable but of very good quality. and if your just starting id recommend rather buying 2-3 in the cheaper priceclass then spending all on one expensive one. getting to know the different styles and expiriencing how crazy big the taste spectrum is in whisky is the best start imho

scotch!

Ardbeg is my favorite.

pretty much all ardbeg makes i good yeah.

tho the blasda i currently have is a bit weird. not bad but very unusual for an ardbeg. very light with just some smoke...

Hunter: I see that you have svedka. How much do you like it? I recently bought a bottle and I must admit that I prefer finlandia...

I only use vodka for mixing (and much less often than gin at that), and I find Svedka is the perfect combination of "tastes all right" and affordable. Good vodka is supposed to be basically flavorless anyway, so I don't see any point in buying anything more expensive (but cheap vodka can be quite nasty). If I drank vodka martinis perhaps it would make a difference, but I'm going to go on the record and say that even James Bond should be ashamed of drinking vodka martinis. Vesper martinis are quite good though--I've got a bottle of Lillet in the fridge. I'm amazed they never did any sort of promotional tie-in with the new Bond movies. A tip for making a Vesper: try adding a bit of bitters, since Lillet today has less quinine than Kina Lillet did when Ian Fleming wrote Casino Royale. I prefer orange bitters, and they help with the color too, since irl a Vesper is only faintly yellow (as seen in Quantum of Solace) and clearly in Casino Royale they added yellow food color.

People who use vodka to make martinis ought to be shot, obviously. Thats what Gin is for (tanqueray for me)!

But that being said, I do not entirely agree with the "vodka is supposed to be flavourless". There's plenty of eastern european vodka that has taste and is actually pretty good.

Yeah, sorry for going off topic. Regarding whisky: Please don't ever buy Jim, Jack and Johnnie. Just... dont
Haven't gotten around to drink ardbeg yet, sadly. So expensive :s

I just picked up "knob" whiskey?

any opinions on it?

does it go well with a whiskey sour?

Knob Creek? It's a nice bourbon--tastes almost like sweet fruit to me. Perhaps a bit fancy for a whiskey sour, but it would taste great. If you use it for a Manhattan, use a bit less vermouth than normal, since it's already a bit sweet (also always use bitters!!!)

What do you mean by use bitters?
And it was more so a gift, and its my first real whiskey that i've gotten.
As for Whiskey sours, i've always been a fan of them since my family makes them sometimes. (granted i have no idea what they use)

ATM i have some sweet and sour mix that i hope is what i need to make a whiskey sour. lol

Aromatic bitters really do a lot to balance out cocktails that would otherwise be too sweet. Originally the word "cocktail" (though its origins are not certain) referred to alcoholic drinks using bitters. The Manhattan is the most popular drink that calls for bitters today, and just a dash or two. A bottle of bitters will last you pretty much forever.

Sweet and sour mix is designed to be easy to use in place of lemon or lime juice--it's a kind of shortcut for bartenders (we use it where I work instead of fresh citrus juice which horrifies me but the customers mostly don't care). At home though, you'd be better off using lemon juice and a little bit of sugar, which is what a whiskey sour really calls for.
Try using both Irradiate and Defensive Matrix on an Overlord. It looks pretty neat.

Johnny Walker Blue may be the Cristal of the whiskey world (overrated, overhyped go-to choice), but it tastes damn fine.

I enjoy wild turkey. For me the most important part of whiskey is the burn on the way down, for my budget wild turkey has a nice enough taste and burns pretty nicely.

My Grandfather died recently, so my family has been going through his cellar. We found a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red that was given to him sometime around the 1950s. So around 60 years old and it was delicious. Saved most of it for some occasion.

I do love my whiskys smokey and bold... I tried something at my brother's place, it was a single barrel 18yrs, but I don't remember the name... that said, if any of you make it to France, and more specifically St. Mâlo, there is an awesome little Irish pub called, you guessed it, St. Patrick's... holy crap that place is a dream for whisky lovers... more than 50 varieties, not including different ages of the same variety. The most expensive you'll find is a couple of 32 year whiskys that run arould 17€ for 4cl... that said, they have scotch, Irish whiskys, stuff from japan, the Caribbeans, everywhere you could imagine... soo cool... I tried four of them one night (I live in Paris atm so not somewhere I can go often) one was really fruity, one was very smokey, almost salty... eh, what a dream to try them all St Patrick's looks like their site is under construction still, but hopefully they eventually show a list of all of the whiskys.

Whiskey is only Ireland and America, everywhere else is whisky.

Also, coincidently, Scots don't call malts 'Scotch', we just call it whisky. Original hipster.

thin nosing glasses. perfect to get the full flavour/smell out of 2-3 cl and get a nice temperature quick

also have shots and tumblers ofc but they are in the kitchen and rarely get used tbh (if i mix then in a big caipirinha glass).

mixing whiskey is ok as long as you dont waste the good ones with it(tho ive been guilty of getting crazy drunk of 60€ rum mixed with red bull last weekend.. what a delicous waste of good liquor..). lets be honest, whisky+ginger ale or cola just tastes good so why not drink it ~~

/edit, btw anyone has any expirience with some of the japanese ones?

I don't discriminate, I love all whisky (whiskey).

Canadian Club 100 proof is pretty good, Crown Royal is great, Glenfiddich's is obviously good.

But for a favourite drink, I would have to go with Tequila.

As we do not have enough of the great Irish Whiskeys here, I will post one that I bought just recently:

I really, really like it. It has a lot of flavor, and it's pretty smooth as well.

Anyone who likes Lagavulin or Laphroag you should try Caol ila. Really good smokey Islay Scotch prob my fav. Right now in the house I have Glenn Livet 12yr and 18yr got it at the Duty free shop real cheap when I went to Canada a couple months ago. My next purchase will prob be Caol ila again, however I had some Balvenie at my friends wedding a month ago and it was reallllly good... Decisions....
