No blocking for me, the ads on this site are so minimal they dont bother me at all, and I want to support the site. I dont block stream ads either as long as they aren't spanned. If the streamer spams adds, I just turn the stream off; that's a much more effective means of protest IMO!

I don't want to adblock it and don't mind seeing any reasonable level of ads. The thing is that the stream ads that replay each time you change a resolution/pop out the window were just too much (especially the interactive ones).

The joke.

You missed it.

Don't forget all the times mods have said it was an obvious tongue-in-cheek joke in this thread ~_~

Why is this even a thread, I don't give a fuck, ads don't harm me, they generate revenue for TL. I'm not the type who would purposelfully harm others in the way of "if I can't have it no one can" or being antiestablishment for the sake of it, "why should I unblock TL I'm such a badass who doesn't give a shit" why would anyone chose to not help when I takes little to no effort, it's just selfish. I could care less where the ad revenue goes, why is everyone so worked up about how TL maximises profits? It's not like you're paying them...

It's over used, but knowledge is power.
And enabling the Ads or not doesn't support e-sports. Pro gamers get money from contracts and tournament winnings. It's not like the profits go towards other teams and such.

Not much you can do. That just tells your computer to redirect to your own computer.
Adblock would block things based on site ( Host file is also for everything on your computer )
No Script ( blocks scripts, some advertisements are blocked but not purposely done in this way, just the way those ads work )

A lot of people who stream on TL make a good amount of a living from their ads. I'd rather support them then worry about 5-10 second commercials.

I've tried to adblock responsibly. If there's a site I visit often, or that has unobtrusive ads, I'll disable ads for it. For general surfing though I have it on for less irritation and general internet safety. If it helps a site I like make money, no way I'd want to hinder it.

I don't understand... loads of people put exceptions in their adblock to "support e-sports" but leave adblock on otherwise? The hypocrisy in that statement is unbearable. If you're for "supporting the websites you visit regularly", why run an adblock at all? You're denying revenue to every website you view that has ads on it.

And my favorite is excepting TL but keeping adblock on for stream pages. Way to screw the players, the ones who need the revenue the most, out of your ad view.

We removed the "Don't hurt Esports" thing. It was a complete joke that we thought would be funny. We didn't realize that people would take it serious. I apologize if you took offense.

Nazgul, you're acting like you're the lord of the moral domain while we're wicked people incapable of any judgment but ones which satisfy our egoist sensitivties. I'm not taking offense here though, just saying that your statement can be interpreted in this way. I would like to think that there are a lot of very intelligent, cultured and educated people reading and contributing here.

But I have to say that I have ad-block on to save bandwidth, memory, etc. Makes the internet less bloated, it's in my interest to leave it on. To add an exception in ad-block for your website, in my case, far exceeds the potential utility for you. Might take me 15 minutes to learn how and properly apply the filter. The money I would be generating for you is (hyperbolic) 7,000,000 times less than the market value of my time. I'm figuring 0.0001% chance of me generating 2 cents by clicking an ad by accident.

I would also add that you're using an advertising model because you're forced to, not as a courtesy. Competing message boards would eat TL alive if it decided to charge for participation/membership.

I've built a few mildly successful websites in my time and total traffic maybe approaching one million. I don't expect anyone coming in my hobby websites to care about the infinitesimal moral economics because the reality of message boards is that they can be replaced by someone who will let them run for free. In the end no one should care about the moral economy here. It's infinitesimal fractions of cents and they don't even matter if they're brought together.

What I'm ok with is spending the hundred dollars on the GomTV vods this year. Now you're talking about a scale that actually matters, paying market value for a product with significant costs.
This is a teaching moment:

Every year, millions of people think they know better than anyone else, and thus become insufferable to everyone around them. It's a horrible affliction that has stymied modern medicine. It's called 'rational egoism'. Symptoms include becoming pretentious and irritating, losing all your friends, and becoming 'that guy'. Don't be that guy. Please take precautions to avoid becoming one of the sad and lonely group of people each year who are stricken with this plague. Be nice to your fellow man. Go out of your way to help others in need. Enjoy life.

If you, or someone you know is suffering from rational egoism please contact your local homeless shelter, soup kitchen, food pantry, religious denomination, or any miscellaneous charity. Please, friends don't friends become rational egoists.

I think the teachable moment applies to one as much as the other...

I personally don't adblock TL, but I wouldn't fault anyone who does.
I might be the minority on TL, but TL is the minority everywhere else.

Sadly I have to say "Yes", but only because I tend to watch a lot of streams and the video commercials with sound drive me crazy. And no, opening the stream at its original location and having ad-block enabled there is not an option due to extra clicking effort. :p

Go to the site you want to whitelist, left-click the Adblock icon in the upper-right (should be red with a hand), and select "Don't run on pages on this domain".

This post makes zero sense and you are 100% wrong. First, if you had ad-block disabled in the first thing you'd never even see that elephant in the first place.

More importantly, THE ONLY THING TL DOES WITH IT'S PROCEEDS IS INVEST IN E-SPORTS! So... yeah, not sure how it doesn't "directly invest its assets to esports."

I am also quite sad that TL has changed what the little banner says. It is 100% valid for it to say that by add-blocking TL you are hurting E-SPORTS. Not pumping revenue into E-SPORTS, hurts E-SPORTS, and TL directly puts their money into supporting things like TL Open, the TSLs, the team Team Liquid, and running/improving this site (aka esports).

I am saying I ad-block the elephant.

Honestly, doesn't TL have a lot of revenue already through the special forum that has 'special offers'? Nazul claims that this site is not-for-profit, but frankly I think the recent practice of aggressive ad campaigns by TL suggests otherwise: is TL losing so much money per month that it can no longer sustain itself? No. Despite the recent influx of visitors, I don't ever see this ever being brought up. Instead, the elephant is just a sad excuse to maximize profit.

Aggressive add campaigns = One additional banner on the right side of the page? ok...

Think about all the costs associated with running a pro sc2 team. They have to pay their players' salaries, fly them all over the world, housing, etc. Not to mention try to scrape up enough to not get their players bought out (HuK.) Now, I'm sure their sponsors Razer and The Little App Factory help, but my guess is that the some of the revenue created by the site also goes into running the team.

I just don't see what this "maximizing profit" you're talking about refers to. Hot_Bid and R1CH do this as their full time job so yeah, they need something to live on, but the money TL makes is going back into esports. If TL was money hungry they could add a donate button or something(people have posted wanting to donate, but mods declined.)

"Dont hurt this elephant" haha :D Anyways, its a joke and even if it was serious, theyve got a point anyways.

Is there any way to enable adds for tl but not for streams I watch?

Disable Adblock in the Extensions menu, restart Chrome, re-enable it.

If that still doesn't work, PM me, lets not derail this thread anymore than the Internet philosophers already have.

Edit: I didn't actually even have to restart Chrome when I tried it myself.

I used to not have ad block, but then I learned of bibme, a really good citation generator website. It lets you generate all sorts of citations and in different styles completely free of charge. But there's 1 catch.

It has a video ad that can't be muted on the side, and for weeks they had this stupid Justin Bieber movie. They still have it -_-. So I got adblock. I spent a whole night writing an essay for IB listening to that !@#$.

But, don't worry. I love ESports.
