2. Summon a 1000 lb governor-type minion
3. Turn people orange
4. Gelbending
And claim to know the Italian spellbook despite not knowing any of the incantations or how to pronounce them.

Wait I thought the only states that were independent countries were Vermont, Texas, California, and Hawaii? I know NJ surrendered in the Revolutionary War, but it didn't become independent, it reverted to colony status.

Wait I thought the only states that were independent countries were Vermont, Texas, California, and Hawaii? I know NJ surrendered in the Revolutionary War, but it didn't become independent, it reverted to colony status. The thirteen colonies, once they secured their independence, functioned as separate countries bound by a weak united government. They all had independent currencies, tariffs, etc. "United States" was actually used as a plural before the American Civil War more often than not. I believe it was something similar to the structure of the Holy Roman Empire in its later years, very decentralized with a mostly nominal central authority. It's why states' rights were and arguably still are an issue that conservatives often bring up - it's a remnant of the old decentralized model.

A cursory glance says a few museums and a coal mine. That is about it. I have to be in Essen for a week afterwards I'm travelling with the lady to some typical European vacation destinations so maybe a day for Dusseldorf too.

Essen is a fairly typical Ruhrgebiet shithole. You're better off getting the hell out and catching a train to Dortmund, Köln or Dusseldorf. If you prefer nature to cities, the Eiffel isn't that far away, and the Rhine and Mösel valleys from approximately Koblenz upriver are also very pretty (but that's a bit further to get to, and probably not worth it for a single day trip).

What does Rehrgebiet shithole constitute? I get Ruhr being part of the state/province/area where Essen is, and google led me to believe there wasn't much to do anyway (probably why they hold this show there in the first place, fewer distractions).

Ruhrgebiet = former coal/steel industrial area in permanent decline for half a century Ruhrgebiet shithole = pretty much any city in Ruhrgebiet Unless abandoned steel works or coal mines is something that interests you get out.

So it is like Dave Attell said about Dayton, Ohio, "... You know what's a fun thing to do there? Pack up and get the fuck out of there." Thank you for the explanation though.
