What Bettman did to the Canadian teams was a sad reality of the business aspect of the game back then. With the stronger Canadian dollar, Canada can now support more franchises and will likely see more as American teams start to fold. People seem to forget that he did save the Oilers in the 90s. he did it because he had no choice, and in the end, it's what the other 29 owners in the league wants and not what bettman wants, and of course the owners don't want to take money out of their bottom line to keep atlanta alive. where else was he planning to move a team to, Siberia? winnipeg was the only place with the available venue and owners with deep enough pockets to take the mess created by the atlanta spirit ownership meanwhile he vainly tries to keep phoenix alive for another year... back to the riot, I think this is pretty mild compared to anything you'll see after a big soccer match in europe.. but it's disappointing to have this "LOL CANADA BOORISH NEANDERTHALS" theme keep popping up in international press coverage.. if this ends anything like the G20 in Toronto, there are gonna be some arrests made because of morons who think it's a cool idea to post pics of themselves posing in front of a burning car on facebook.

For instance Liverpool doesn't win the premier league in almost 20 years and they were the team with most wins(now man utd has more) and they don't riot.. Benfica the best team in Portugal is being overshadowed by Porto in the last 30 years and we never rioted even with Porto being accused of various crimes and corruption for the last 30 years since they started winning.. I don't think this is acceptable or understandable.. it's really stupid and sad.. On the other hand football also brings forth too much violence and even ice hockey is nothing compared to football in that department.. I expect more from you canadiens since you guys are one of the most inteligent and peacefull countrys in the world..

Real fans of the game of hockey can appreciate the efforts of a better team, instead of booing the Stanley Cup winners and burning police cars outside. Makes me disgusted to be a hockey fan sometimes. Nope, all the true Canuck fans were too heartbroken to even look at the celebrations, let alone boo or riot..

I'm sure Vancouver as a whole is /facepalming over what a small minority of people, most likely drunken idiots, did with the rioting. From the outside looking in, it does make it look like "Vancouver did it" but it really wasn't Vancouver, just a bunch of idiots who happened to be in Vancouver that did it.

If I were the NHL i'd remove the canucks from the league or play all there games behind closed doors for the next 10years, you can't expect to have fucking thugs as fans and get away with it, I feel a little disgraced for the fact was rooting for the canucks...

When 99% of them realize that they aren't good enough to play any more, it becomes their dream to watch their team raise the cup, and for Vancouver, a team that has been around for 40 years without ever having won it, and now they not only had a chance, but they were expected to win. ... This is Canada, and we go through hockey riots every year at this time, whether its montreal, vancouver, edmonton, or montreal (did i mention montreal?). So basically you are saying that Canadians start thinking sometime, but then stop when they have grown up eventually? Rioting is the same as losing your self-control and letting your emotions decide your actions. I am reminded A LOT of Frank Herbert's definition of "human" in his novel DUNE. To be a human you must be able to override your emotions and instincts. If you cant do that you are an animal (even though you belong to the species of homo sapiens and have been taught to read and write). Drunk driving, rioting, (Starcraft) patriotism, ... lots of currently discussed topics here on TL which are based upon emotions instead of rational decisionmaking. Humanity needs to get rid of this lack of self-control, but our kiddies are taught to express themselves and their emotions much more than to think about the consequenses of their actions. The "definition" from DUNE might be a good start to point people in the right direction when it comes to our societies and finding a new direction.

And on the culture that kind of exists as a result of that... which is just ridiculous. Sports? Really? There are many things in this world to riot about, to be upset about, but Hockey or any sport is not one of them. It actually makes me more upset to think of all the other shit wrong and that people WOULD actually riot but only if their blue colored team wins or loses. That's just sick. All this crap on TV and Radio and in print just blows up the importance of this crap in people's minds. It's really just a joke. And... if you've got the balls to get drunk and charge police lines and burn shit... do it because of a G8 meeting or a war or the IMF... just goes to show actually WHY our world is so fucked up and where priorities are.

I am glad I don't live in a city with the potential of these riots to raise my taxes and waste tax payer money investigating. With all of this video footage a lot of people should be arrested and/or fined.

Sorta, They just have the same mentality. I am Idra so I should win every sc2 tourney. (since I am the best at this game) I am Canadian so my Canadian team should win it all.(since we r the best at this game)

Tons of people just gathered in the streets to watch the giant TV's streaming the game. Montreal got eliminated in quarter finals last year, and fans riotted and caused more troubles than that... Many cars turned over and burnt down, shops looted, molotov cocktails, etc... I think that's why he means "Montreal probably has it worse", because Montreal fans are so f.ing bipolar that it's not even remotely close to such an important game, but if they lose there will still have some idiots "riotting" and burning shit after the game, "because they lost!"... People are so SMART...
