While a stupid video, I did take this somewhat to heart and my vibrato is pretty solid.

Not the same but in a similar ballpark- I have a few simple exercises I used to do for bending as well. Basically take a scalar pattern and bend up to the next note rather than fretting all of them. It helps you get both consistency in bending to pitch and an added benefit in improving your familiarity of pitch and all that good stuff. Minor blues is a good one to do because of the mixture of intervals there.

Saw some pics of the 2015 Gibson lineup.

Holy shit that company is going down the fucking drain. I've been saving up and looking around for a Les Paul for a while now, and it looks like i'll have to start hunting for used ones because LOL 3.5k euros for a fucking LP Standard....that's above most custom shops too...

Their 2014 line is downright hideous. And yeah they are out to lunch when it comes to prices too. Suddenly the old Studio models are 300-400 more than they used to be (and they are called Studio Pro guitars despite being exactly the same as they used to be at a cheaper price) and at their old price range are these super ugly, matte-finished cheap looking Les Pauls that are not nice to play (they had one at the local shop. Bleh).

To put things into perspective on price, I'm looking for a used Les Paul right now too. On Ishibashi, I can get one (either a standard or a classic. 50s or 60s) with a AA flamed maple top for about $1500ish. Tack on a couple hundred for shipping and duty and it's still around $1500 cheaper than buying a new Les Paul with a plus top under Gibson's new pricing. Even plain tops and solid colours are insanely priced now.

I'm having really bad luck with getting a guitar. I picked out a 60s Les Paul (one of around 150 Les Pauls on Ishibashi) that had a AA flamed maple top in iced tea burst and when I went to inquire about it last night it had sold. So I went to my second choice, a Caparison Dellinger they had on there that was in amazing shape and very reasonably priced, especially for a Caparison (Caparisons are insanely expensive, and for a good reason. They're amazing. They are made by the people that Jackson/Charvel stuff in the late 80s and early 90s, the guitars that were so good they ate into USA Jackson sales so they had to discontinue many of them). I sent an inquiry for it, and it sold between me sending an inquiry and this morning. Now I'm back to stage 1. I'm looking at a few Ibanez Prestige/J Customs, some ESPs and Edwards (you can get ESPs for around $1000 if you are patient), and a few different Les Pauls. Ishibashi seems to have great prices on Les Pauls but it also seems like if you see one you have to act immediately. There were 4 different LPs under $1400 I was looking at and all of them have sold (I seriously wonder if there aren't ebayers buying them to resell. It wouldn't be tough to make a profit on them). Decisions decisions.

I knew Gibson was starting to go downhill but...

I'm pretty disappointed. They got rid of the "Classic" the year before I was going to buy it. That was like literally the perfect Les Paul imo. It was still a bit pricey at $1800, but it wasn't so ridiculous that I felt like I was spending an absurd amount of money on entertainment. I ended up "settling" for my Fireburst Les Paul Studio, but they've since discontinued that model as well. I'm really not impressed with Gibson's newer models and I feel like they've sold out for gimmicks like self-tuning guitars. How about they go back to making solid guitars, and a few higher end models with a few unique features. I'd rather see Gibson guitars with features like coil-splitting, active pickups, a Floyd Rose, or even Seymour Duncan pickups as opposed to these retarded self-tuning pieces of shit and the overpriced nonsense that they've been putting out. In my opinion they've abandoned their more traditional values of taking a simple guitar and putting the best quality hardware in it and making it well.

I'm actually reasonably ok with the 2014 models themselves (except forcing people to use the e-tune thingy). I mean, some of them are absolutely dumb (wtf is a Les Paul Peace), but on average they look at least passable.

What i'm not ok with is a) their pricing (1800$ used to be a Trad, not a Classic ffs) b) the way they market things and c) the way they handle their catalogue, just putting random shit every year between tributes, birthdays or whatever the hell else. The 2013 range was great, but this time they have just gone full retard. The 2015 has some seeeeeeriously dumb shit...Amazon posted pics/links to them earlier (they have since been taken down), and one of the model was called Les Paul Less Plus. What in the name of all the fucks is that????

Gibson pickups are good as is, and they have had coil taps on them for a really long time btw. And yeah, some models with trems and higher output/active pickups would be nice. What they need to do tbh is just copy Fender's catalogue:

Top of the range guitars: LP Standard (like the American standard range), LP Traditional (Vintage reissue series), some Axcess/more modern variation, kind of like the American Deluxe. Only screw around with features on the modern one.

For the more middle range guitars, they could go for:

Reissue/tribute range; basically copy the ideas from the Classic Player series. They could reissue 50's or 70's models like Deluxes, Goldtops with P90's, 54 style guitars LP's with wrap around bridges, Juniors/Specials etc.

Modern/shred guitars: just like the Blacktop range, add EMG's/ceramic/dirty fingers pups, on-board boost circuits, maybe Floyds or Kahlers as an option.

Classic/Classic Custom: just make a stripped down Trad/Custom with plain tops and maybe using different/cheaper fretboard material like the 2013 Sig T or 2012 Classic Customs were.

Lower end guitars like Studios actually make sense already because they tend to be more consistent year in and year out. Just make sure to not put vomit-colored plastics on them next time...

Well, I went shopping for a Les Paul, and ended up embracing my inner Van Halen yet again instead. I just put in an order request for a really cool guitar.

The background they use tames it a bit. On blue backgrounds it looks like a giant highlighter. You better believe I'm buying flourescent yellow knobs and pickup toppers. Or maybe flourescent pink and green.

Comes with a case and everything too. It's absolutely mint.

Also, on the Gibson thing. The vomit coloured plastic was the hugest headscratcher ever. WHY? I just don't understand. It looks okay with maybe one Studio finish, all the rest it looks just heinous with. And yeah, I'm glad I'm not crazy and they are just greedy jerks. I thought it was the local music shops trying to drive away even more business by raising the price but I guess it is just Gibson doing that instead. I can't see how they can be profitable making decisions like this. They killed a huge chunk of the best parts of their line up. I'm totally with you on what they should do with their line ups. Fender does definitely do it right.

Edit: I am dealing with a different person than I did the other times. He called me Benjamin-san. Also I got a full description of conditioning and it is as expected. Light wear on pickguard from picking and light wear on frets. Otherwise mint condition. I do need to track down an Edge Zero trem arm, which may be a non-trivial task given that the Edge Zero II is significantly more common now and uses a different arm. I'll check the local shop first, but otherwise I found a place in the UK that sells them. Ibanez does but they only appear to ship to the US.

I really like that Ibanez Prestige, don't even mind the color haha. Sexy fucking guitar if you ask me, plays like a dream I'm sure as well. What's the actual Ibanez ID number mumbo jumbo for that one? I'm trying to look for that series and I can't find it under just Ibanez Prestige.

EDIT: Most likely an Ibanez RG2550Z?

EDIT: Most likely an Ibanez RG2550Z?

It is an RG3250MZ. Similar to the 2550Z but at the same time quite different. They were only available for a short time in 2010-2011 and are not too common because they were quite expensive new so not many were sold. I got this one for just a smidge above half the price they went for new. Throw in a hard case and it was a pretty hard deal to pass up on.

The main differences in it and the 2550Z is that it has actual Dimarzios rather than Ibanez/Dimarzios (It comes with a Tone Zone in the bridge, an Air Norton for neck, and then a True Velvet single coil in the middle). Otherwise they are quite similar outside of looks obviously. They have the same inlays, same tonewood, and the same bridge. The 2550z doesn't have a matching headstock and comes with a rosewood fretboard. They had a 2550z too and that was going to be my second choice if this one wasn't available.

I got the itch for an Ibanez like this after playing my old Ibanez 7 string. I have had that 7 string (I think it is an Apex 2 or something. Some dude's signature model. I needed a 7 string for something and it was for sale used for the same price as an RG7321 and sounded quite good. It has DiMarzio PAF Pros in it and is made of mahogany. Pretty good for $400. It's really chunky sounding) for a few years now, but basically never touched it outside the week I bought it but for some reason I felt like playing it a couple weeks back and since then I've played it exclusively. I kept thinking "this is great but I wish it had 6 strings" and that is how I ended up picking out this new Ibanez. I used to hate how thin the necks on Ibanez guitars are but now I adore it. Take away the added width of a 7 string and it would be the perfect neck for me.

Damn that is sexy man, congrats.

As I am somewhat destitute my purchasing dreams have been dashed. Perhaps one day I can find a buyer for one of my wizened kidneys and get a Vigier Excalibur. Anyone tried one of those? Holy shit man, ridiculous guitars I'm surprised they never really got much recognition outside of guitar nerds.

One more interface question: I've just now had a chance to try my hand at recording my mic with the Phase x64 USB audio interface and it's ridiculously quiet. So I use a standard XLR cable from my SM57 to the Mic/Line XLR input. There's a gain knob for the Mic/Line in which I've turned to 11 (max). On the left side there's a switch that toggles the channel between Mic and Line input, that's on Mic (putting it on Line because everything even quieter).

The only way to get a visible wave form peak even with the above setting is to literally touch the tip of the SM57. It's WAY too quiet, like the preamps aren't working. Phantom power is off (on makes no difference as it should with a dynamic microphone). Tried recording with Audacity and FL Studio, same result.

Any ideas what the problem could be? Any common error source that I'm forgetting about?

EDIT: I have checked my Windows mixer recording levels (at 100) and to be more precise with what I'm saying, if I speak into my mic loudly I can't even get the input level to go over -32db. My guitar plugged into the HiZ input is similary quiet (but of course that's fine since I run amp simulation over it like Peavey ReValver Mk.III). That can't be right?

I got my ridiculous yellow guitar today. It is brighter than I thought. The pictures they had must have been in weird lighting. It is full on highlighter yellow. It's great! It's in amazing shape too. Just pickguard scratches and a tiny bit of fretwear. The bridge is really cool. I already have adjusted it a bit and that thumbscrew thing is super neat. The action on this thing is insane. Lower than either of my Jacksons when I have them set up. I haven't played it plugged in yet, but unplugged it is quite bright, which is what I expected. The neck is insanely thin. It's super comfy but wow is it thin. I knew it would be thin, but not that thin. It's thinner than any other guitar I've played.

Didn't have to pay duty either! YESSS

Also, it came with this dope multitool thing.

All the safety stuff in the manual was only in Japanese. Other parts were in multiple languages. Anyhow, there were some sweet cartoons mixed in with the safety stuff. I particularly like the guitar with sunstroke and the guy jamming his hand under the bridge. I've totally done that before. It hurts. A lot.

Ishibashi was great as always. I dealt with a different person this time but the experience was the same. It was packed insanely well. 4 layers of bubble wrap over top of the hard case and the headstock was wrapped in bubble wrap too. The guitar was detuned for shipping. Canada Post was slower than normal (they put it on the wrong truck yesterday so I didn't get it until today) but outside of that, it was all smooth and as usual I'd highly recommend Ishibashi for your weird non-standard guitar needs.

I'll post further thoughts once I've played it more and actually plugged it in. I'm particularly interested in the bridge as I've never used these newer Ibanez bridges before. All of the other floating bridges I've used have been either Floyd Roses or Schaller licensed Floyds. I'm definitely going to mess with the ZPS thing.

Also, if you saw that ruler in the multitool, they provide measurements and instructions for how set the action so it is insanely low. I thought that was pretty neat. When I change strings I'll probably have to do that. Given the complexity of this bridge, this will probably come in handy.

I'm sorry I don't know without spending some time with it. It sounds like you should be getting signal at a much higher level than you are.

Here are a couple tracks of me singing and playing.

https://soundcloud.com/discodinosaur/fingerpickin

This is me just playing.

Day tripper was must first attempt at double tracking my voice. I think there was a little too much distortion on the whole track, but it sounded way different in speakers versus headphones.

Chains is me playing and singing in one take.

Hopefully posting this doesn't discredit everything else I've ever said on here. Thanks for listening!

That looks like the exact case and multi-tool I got with my JEM. Love the color btw, you have balls for going with that one (In the good sense). They are a bit tricky to restring, but not too bad. I had to adjust mine a bit to get rid of some fret buzzing, but then again I asked for Rich at ibanezrules to tweak it for low action, it was just a bit too low heh.

Also, if you saw that ruler in the multitool, they provide measurements and instructions for how set the action so it is insanely low. I thought that was pretty neat. When I change strings I'll probably have to do that. Given the complexity of this bridge, this will probably come in handy.

Yeah I figured that those multitools were standard with higher end models (I knew the case was. The multitool has the Prestige logo on the other side). As far as the bridge goes, I've already changed one broken string and it seemed about normal compared to Schaller Floyds. Far better than any knock-off floyd. It's an extremely smooth bridge to use and seems quite stable. I'm going to do a full restring soon so I'll see how it is then but so far it seems pretty great overall.

And yeah overall, I am still loving this guitar a ton. It just plays so great. The neck is absolutely superb. I don't have basically any buzz despite having action set insanely low. I didn't think it was possible to have the action set this low and still be playable. It's just amazing. It was weird to adjust to after years of only playing Jacksons and Fenders, but it's a nice change.

I continue to love the yellow. It's so goofy. Most metal-oriented guitars now are so boring. Dark colours with an ebony fretboard. I've always been partial to maple fretboards so that combined with the insane yellow was perfect. The inlays are actually really neat looking in person. I didn't know if I would like them but I do quite a bit.

Noob here. Does this tuning mean I have the 2nd string a bit higher than d-flat and the 3rd string a bit lower? Are all the strings seriously supposed to be tuned the same? I ponder these thoughts as I broke my 3rd string whilst loosening it. This surprised me... but I have had them on there a while, need to buy new ones tomorrow!
