Yeah I looked at the manual online and it is an XLR/TRS input! And I have used ASIO4ALL before, had to do that for latency even when directly plugging my guitar in with a simple 1/4"->1/8" adapter cable. I don't think/hope I'll need it because the Maya comes with what they and reviewers call 'professional drivers' but if worst comes to worst, I know how to do that!

Unrelated question: I have an ENGL Slow Hand Motion 100W head and I was looking to replace all tubes (4 12AX7 pre- and 4 6L6 power) and the guitar tech I consulted asked for 200 euros for the tubes alone, plus ~50 for the work. Is it really THAT expensive (250 euroes) for a complete tube swap?

Doesn't sound too far fetched.
You could always go shop for your own tubes and then just have the guy switch 'em.

Well, in that case, ouch. I also wanted to replace a bunch of chickenhead dials that broke off on the front panel and get it checked up as well. That tallies up to 350 euros... Twice that and I could buy a really nice new amp... Urgh! I guess I'll just keep it as is for a while longer and get me a really nice 1x12" box with celestion speaker instead next or something, those seem to run at ~300-350 euros.

EDIT: Are 1x12" with a 100W head loud enough to comfortably play over drums? I assume so but I'm not sure. My other guitarist and bassist in my band use 2x12" and I've been using the same so far (albeit a crappy box, that's why I'm upgrading).

While a stupid video, I did take this somewhat to heart and my vibrato is pretty solid.

So this is a big ask, but I've been playing guitar for a few months now and my friend desperately needs a guitarist to perform with him at a venue for 5-10 minutes. This is the song:

The thing is, my ear is terrible and trying to work out all his fingerings and what he's plucking is very difficult for me. If anyone could help me transcribe it, or even just tell me the chords that would be amazing. I know this thread doesn't see much action, but I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks!

So I got the Maya 22 USB Audio interface and it works well but I'm having issues with latency still. It only goes down to "48" in the driver latency setting, which I assume means 48ms, which feels okay for powerchords and stuff but definitely not for any fast lead playing. I switched from DirectSound to MME and that made it feel quite a bit better but it's still not fast enough.

Is this the point where I either use Asio4all (which means I can't play along to Youtube videos for example because it's an exclusive driver) or send it back? I could get the Terrasoniq Phase X64 instead which is much more expensive (but as cheap as the Maya currently), I assume that would have less latency? http://www.thomann.de/gb/terrasoniq_phase_x64_usb.htm

EDIT: the 48 is not 48ms but a buffer size of 48KB, which affects the latency. Either way it's still very noticeable when I play faster lines along with a reference.

I'd call the company and ask how to lower latency. Extremely noticeable latency shouldn't happen unless you have a really old computer.

I would highly recommend a program called guitar pro.
It plays midi files while displaying the tabs on screen. You can input the tabs yourself, so if you try and have a look at what he's playing, you could then use trial and error to figure it out.

The program is also very useful for learning any other songs,

Hm well it's not SUPER extremely noticeable, but it's certainly there and it makes it hard to play faster lead phrases accurately, I'm not sure there's anything I can do, and my PC is super up-to-date, build it like two weeks ago, i7-4690K, 16GB DDR3-RAM etc.

Currently unsure if I want to stick to the interface regardless or try for the other offer of that more expensive one and see if that offers less latency.

I've been trying to transcribe it in guitar pro for a while now and I haven't had any success, not to mention I've never had any musical training so I can't get the note timing right with the program. Even while trying to see what he's playing and listening over and over I just can't seem to get the right notes down... my ear really is shocking.

Where do you notice the latency? In recordings? You have to correct for latency anytime you do an overdub like that, but most recording software has the feature built in. Ableton has an option in preferences, for example.

That's sorta the extent of my knowledge on the subject though. I'd still recommend calling the company before you commit to a new interface. It would be very unprofessional to sell a really laggy interface.

Ah sorry, I should've been more clear! I haven't even recorded yet. All I did is plug my guitar into the Hi-Z Instrument In, start up my amp simulation (Peavey ReValver MkIII) and play. And there's sorta subtle latency there between me plugging my notes on the guitar and hearing the amp simulated tone from the PC back. It's not extreme latency because when I just hit chords it feels okay but I do notice clear latency in tight rhythm sections.

A little off topic, but someone bought me a Martin Ukulele for my birthday awhile back and I am now playing it more than my Ibanez JEM77v (which I absolutely LOVE btw). Such a fun little instrument, I can just sit back in my arm chair or bed and play away while watching Starcraft or w/e. I urge any TL musician to grab one if they want a little fun break from the norm. =]

Nice.
I got a £20 uke a while back and have been using it to teach my girlfriend the basics of guitar.
You can play a ukelele in almost any situation.
On a rollercoaster; in the middle of a terrorist attack; while teaching a class of 17 year old reprobates, literally any situation.

kidna hard to say

a 100w amp is FUCKING LOUD.
a 12" speaker can be FUCKING LOUD

a 25W amp with a 12" speaker can be heard over drums - if its the right amp in the right room ...

you take an amp like a mark iv and its FUCKING LOUD -and only 85w with a 1x12 speaker. Its loud enough for a lot of bars.

you generally want the power in those amps for the tone, but they are also very fucking loud.

as for cost go and look at TAD store
http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/en/

i buy my tubes from there. i dont know your amp but you probably want a matched quad set, look at your tubes it will say what they are. You probably want to replace the preamp tubes also

in my laney vh100r its 6 preamp tubes and 4 power tubes,
Costs a lot of do, but holy shit does it sound good.

Once you do it yourself and know what state the tubes are in you can start swapping them over - you can squeeze more life out of them. I generally get a year of heavy use. 2 usually.

if you use the same kinds of tubes as you already have then its a simple open her up and replace them job - especially if you buy matched sets.

1 100w head will usually want a 2x12 but you can do it 1x12 ... the tone is better through a 2x12 tho. They can just move more air - its not just a volume thing its a penetration thing.

if you really only want a 1x12 (and tbh thats a perfectly sane choice) then id ask do you really want a 100w amp that can basically deafen everyone in a decent sized bar? Basically im saying a 1x12 in a small bar is enough and you can drive the speaker so you get more character.

you want to drive your amp, i find it hard to really drive mine and not damage ears.

Thanks for the info!

About the interface: I've issued a return on the Maya and ordered the other USB audio interface instead. Hoping this one will give me less latency so I can plug my guitar into my PC and play through ReValver Mk.III or other amp simulations without issues or Asio4All. Here's hoping this more expensive interface has better performance!

Oh no, gear acquisition syndrome has hit me in a hard fashion. I've been given the all-clear to get a new instrument (my parents are going on a trip so I said if they do that I can get a new guitar and they said okay) and now I have spent far too long looking at different stuff.

I'll probably go with Ishibashi again and get something else crazy from there. I went to the local shop on the way home from work today and they are now officially charging both arms and legs for instruments (new or used). It's absolutely insane how much Canadian music stores have jacked up prices since our dollar dropped below the USD in value. A USA Fender Strat identical to the one I own is now over $200 more than when I got mine. Our dollar may have dropped in value a bit, but not that much.

Ishibashi has actual ESPs (including a sick lawsuit ESP with a Jackson headstock) and a ton of cheap Edwards models I'm looking at (Edwards are made by ESP in Japan). They also have some remaining Jackson Stars models that are temping. I kinda want to get one of the RR models. They're absolutely sick. They also have a few others in my price range I am tempted to inquire about.

I fixed my interface issues BTW, I was a dumbass and had my headphones still plugged into my actual motherboard soundcard. If I plug them into the actual interface out it works without latency using ASIO 2.0 drivers (not ASIO4all).
