That article is so irresponsibly titled and written, it actually makes me mad.

Cool thread. Ever since i stopped using "snus" (swedish, or probably scandinavian type of tobacco which you put under your lip) on a regular basis, i enjoy the occasional cigarette instead (probably around 4-5/week). But im thinking of getting a pipe instead, since i use it so rarely i might as well REALLY enjoy it! :>
|
So i have a weird problem.
Been smoking roll ups for approx 6 years, and in the last 4 weeks or so, my papers just wont stick! never had this problem before, they just stick then.. come unstuck as im smoking. I have bought different brands from multiple locations and still had a problem, so it has to be something im doing, and yet i havnt had this once in 6 years, i havnt changed the way i roll or lick my papers.
Any suggestions?

Would smoking four bowls of hookah a day be worse for you health wise than a pack of cigarettes? What do you guys think?

Hookah is almost certainly better, or rather, less bad, than smoking cigarettes, but four bowls sounds like a lot. I suppose it depends how big the bowl is, how thoroughly you're smoking it, how effective your hookah's water filter is, how often/well you clean your hoses, and what exactly you're smoking out of it. When I pack my hookah, it will easily run for 3 hours (12 hours for 4 bowls). Since I'm guessing you don't smoke Hookah for 12 hours a day, you probably don't have a very large bowl, don't pack it very full, or don't smoke it all the way. My bet is that it's still better for you, even when comparing 4 bowls to 1 pack, but I have absolutely no data to back that up. I'm not even sure how one would go about figuring that out.
If you're curious why, there are a few reasons: 1. Hookah tobacco is less processed than cigarettes or other forms of tobacco. Tobacco for cigarettes is soaked in all manner of chemicals in order to remove some of the harshness and normalize flavors between batches (your Marlboro Reds need to taste the same every time). Hookah tobacco avoids this because so much of the flavor comes from the good the tobacco is covered in (usually just something high in sugar, like honey, molassas, or a simple syrup) and anything else they've added to it, like bots of fruit or other herbs.
2. Hookas use a water filter, which is surprisingly effective for removing particulates and other contaminants. If your hookah has many pipes that lead into the water (creating smaller bubbles), then the filter is more effective than a hookah with just 1 pipe. Just look at the water in your hookah after only one use. Filters on cigarettes, if they have them at all, simply don't cut it. Dont get me wrong, it's partially because the cigarette tobacco is so aweful for you in the first place, but still... Hell, there are even hookah hoses designed to take filters, and filters designed to fit on the end of any hose. If you're concerned, you could look into those.

Smoked for 4 years during high school. Mostly colts, cpt blacks, and eventually a briar wood pipe. Occasional hookah bar with friends and cigs while drunk at parties. In my first year of college I just said fuck this and quit instantly (drinking too) . I still have my briar pipe though, it's beautiful. Sometimes I kinda want to smoke a bowl but I don't.
Pipes are amazing, some of the finishes put on them are just beautiful. I love sand blast and rusticated pipes the most, never really found the polished/clean finish to be appealing.

Hookah is awesome, I feel like its an icebreaker for people you don't really know at a party. Also picking a nice flavor will make or break it for those icebreaking opportunities. I feel like it would be hard for me to pack a bowl of hookah alone, it would not be the same without friends. I make sure I keep the smoking to a moderate level for a certain period of time. I smoke once or twice a week, sometimes not at all.
As for my favorite flavor: Citrus Mist, so good!

The cheaper stuff like Winston and Next go for ~6, and imports such as Benson and Hedges go for double that price. If you buy by the carton it's usually a lot cheaper especially from discount e-tailers, usually $~30-50 for 10 packs (200). WTH, where in the US is it $9/pack?!?!?! I pay $5.25 and feel cheated... I would probably have an aneurism over $9
I payed 10 bucks flat for a pack of marlboro's in Manhattan Here in dutchland they have a nationwide set price of 5 euro for 19 sigs

I'm tired of smoking Belmont and Marlboro lights.
Can you guys recommend a higher end brand available in Canada? Toronto to be specific.

In UK its generally £6-7 for a 20 pack, whereas rolling your own is much cheaper, especially if you buy your tobacco from abroad :D

In Canada low end cigs start at $10 (25 pack), higher end is like $12-$15. About 70% of that is tax.

It's a fucking sensationalist article about "increasing rigidity of arteries" after one cigarette. Doctors measure tobacco smoke damage in "pack years" which is one pack a day for a year. Any article that tells you very moderate cigarette exposure will have a real negative effect on your long term health is written by an idiot.
Also, rolling your own cigarettes tastes better, is more fulfilling, and helps you smoke in moderation. And is MUCH cheaper, good rolling tobacco is about 20$ a bag, which can roll me about 100 cigs.

Yeah, definitely this. I've had cigarettes only a handful of times (I'm a cigar smoker), and I can definitely taste all the extra chemical shit that's in cigarettes.

When I was last in Vegas, I was strolling through the Caesars Palace Forum Shops, and there was a Cigar and Brandy lounge.
For some reason, although I've never smoked, the idea of being old-school classy with a cigar, some good friends and some brandy really appealed to me.
However I didn't take the opportunity, and in Canada I've never seen a similar place.

Just fired up a Partagas Super and bottled up some champagne! happy easter everyone
